1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesOBS Studio is the best free starting point for most game streamers who want control over scenes, sources, audio and streaming settings. Choose Streamlabs Desktop if you prefer a guided setup and integrated widgets. Neither guarantees smooth gameplay streaming: your game, encoder, output settings and computer all matter, so test with your actual setup before going live.
Which game-streaming software should you choose?
| Choose | Best fit | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| OBS Studio | Streamers who want a flexible, free tool and are comfortable configuring it. | Build scenes from sources such as game capture, windows, webcams and capture cards; configure audio filters and other settings; extend the software with plugins. |
| Streamlabs Desktop | Streamers who value guided onboarding and built-in widgets. | The official setup guide walks through account linking, scenes, gameplay and camera sources, widgets, audio, stream settings and a pre-stream check. The installer offers Free and Ultra choices; the guide does not establish a price. |
These are use-case recommendations, not results from comparative performance tests. The OBS Project describes OBS Studio as “Free and open source software for video recording and live streaming.” Its official product page lists support for streaming platforms and composition from different sources. OBS Studio
OBS vs. Streamlabs: what is the practical difference?
OBS Studio: flexibility and control
OBS lets you compose scenes from multiple sources, configure audio filters and video settings, and add plugins. It is a strong starting point if you want to build your own production setup or adjust it over time. OBS provides downloads for Windows, macOS and Linux; check the current download and compatibility information for your operating system before installing. OBS downloads
Streamlabs Desktop: a more guided first setup
Streamlabs Desktop’s official quick-start, published May 20, 2026, describes a guided flow: link accounts, choose or import settings, select a camera and microphone, create scenes, add Game Capture or Screen Capture, add widgets such as alerts or chat, configure audio and stream settings, then test before going live. It offers Free and Ultra plan choices during setup; the reviewed guide does not establish current prices. Streamlabs Desktop quick-start guide
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use the built-in test step to check alert and widget behavior, camera placement and audio meters. The guide suggests 30 FPS as a general starting point for slower card games and 60 FPS for fast action, but those are settings to test—not a guarantee of the best output for your game, hardware or connection.
How to decide
- Pick OBS if flexibility and control matter more than a guided setup.
- Pick Streamlabs Desktop if its onboarding and integrated widgets suit the way you want to work.
- Before committing, confirm the current build supports your operating system and intended streaming destination.
- Do not assume a computer capable of running the game can also encode a stream smoothly. Test your chosen software with the game open and the output settings you plan to use.
Can your computer handle game streaming?
Compatibility requirements are only a baseline, not a performance guarantee. OBS says streaming capability depends on workload: encoder choice, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity all affect CPU demands. A demanding game, several live sources and other running programs can add load. OBS recommends trying its Auto Configuration Wizard, then testing with the actual game and target output. Do you need a capture card to stream console games?
Not for every setup. You can capture PC gameplay in software. A capture card is for bringing video from another device—such as a console, a second computer or a traditional camera—into your streaming computer. OBS lists capture cards among the sources you can add to a scene. Twitch’s getting-started guide explains this external-device use case; because that guide is from 2020, treat its hardware examples and compatibility notes as dated, not as current model recommendations. Twitch guide to streaming software
Before buying, check that the card supports your source device, computer, operating system and intended resolution and frame rate. The capture card is an optional input method, not a requirement for all PC streamers.

How to set up a first game stream
- Install and check compatibility. Download OBS Studio from its official download page or install Streamlabs Desktop from its official source. Check the current system requirements for your operating system.
- Connect your streaming account. In Streamlabs Desktop, follow its account-linking flow. For OBS, configure the service and stream connection using the platform’s current instructions. Keep your stream key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Create a scene and add sources. Add the game with Game Capture or capture the relevant screen/window if needed. Add a webcam, microphone or capture card only if your setup uses one. Arrange and resize sources so important gameplay and overlays remain visible.
- Configure audio. Confirm the game and microphone appear on the intended audio meters. Listen for clipping, muted inputs or unwanted background sound, and use available audio filters where helpful.
- Choose output settings your setup can sustain. Select a resolution, frame rate and encoder supported by your system and streaming platform. There is no universal setting that guarantees smooth output across different games and computers. Make a test stream or recording and inspect both the picture and sound.
- Check the complete scene before going live. Verify camera placement, widget and alert behavior, game capture, audio levels and the platform destination. Streamlabs’ guide specifically recommends testing alerts/widgets, camera placement and audio meters.
- Go live and monitor the result. Watch for dropped frames, encoding overload, missing audio or a frozen capture. If the stream is unstable, lower the output demand or simplify the scene, then test again.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | What to check | Practical fix |
|---|---|---|
| Game runs, but stream stutters or drops frames | Encoder load, output resolution and frame rate, scene complexity, and competing programs. | Use OBS Auto Configuration Wizard as a starting point; reduce output demand or simplify the scene, then test again with the game running. |
| Game capture is blank | Whether the correct game or window is selected and whether the scene contains the intended source. | Re-select or add the appropriate Game Capture or Screen Capture source, then verify it in the preview before going live. |
| Viewers cannot hear the game or microphone | Input selection, mute state and the relevant audio meters. | Select the intended devices, unmute them and confirm the meters respond; make a test recording or stream and listen back. |
| Alerts or widgets do not appear | Widget setup and the scene containing the widget. | Use the software’s test function where available and check the widget in the correct scene before going live. |
| Console video does not reach the streaming app | Whether the console is connected through a compatible capture device and the card is recognized by the computer. | Check the card’s compatibility with the console, computer and operating system, then add it as a scene source. |
Copyright and channel rules still apply
Streaming software only sends your scene to a platform; it does not grant rights to the game, music, video or other material you include. Check the platform’s current rules and make sure you have permission to use any third-party material in your stream. Do not assume that material available in a game or online is cleared for broadcast.
Or let it run in the cloud
OBS and Streamlabs Desktop are broadcasting apps for a live setup you operate. If instead you want a YouTube channel to loop uploaded videos continuously, StreamNeo is a different option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once and go live. The cloud keeps it running, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot; automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube uploaded-video streams, not camera broadcasts. See StreamNeo, then start your free day.
