Video encoding compresses your live video and audio into a stream that a platform can receive and viewers can play. Your encoder’s settings—especially bitrate, resolution, frame rate, codec and keyframe interval—shape the balance among picture quality, computer load, upload use, compatibility and delay. There is no single best bitrate or codec for every stream: choose settings for your platform’s ingest requirements and the content you are sending.

What is video encoding?

A camera, screen capture or video file starts as a source. An encoder—software or hardware—compresses that source into a data stream, usually combining video and audio, for delivery to a streaming platform. The platform ingests the stream and makes it available to viewers.

Encoding is not the same as transcoding. Encoding is the creator-side step that produces the stream you send. Transcoding is a downstream step in which a platform or service converts an ingested feed into other versions, such as lower resolutions or bitrates, so viewers can select a version suited to their device or connection. The availability and behavior of transcoding vary by platform and can change; check the platform’s current guidance.

Which encoding settings affect a live stream?

Bitrate

Bitrate is the amount of data allocated to the stream over time. More bitrate can preserve more visual information, but it also consumes more upload capacity. A higher setting cannot fix an encoder that is overloaded, and it does not make an unsupported codec or protocol compatible.

The bitrate you need depends on resolution, frame rate and scene motion as well as the encoder and its settings. OBS Project’s 2017 x264 guide gives high-motion 1080p60 at the x264 veryfast preset as an example that may need more than 8,000 kbps; its general chart discussion assumes veryfast and low-to-medium motion, and the guide notes that low-motion content can work at much lower bitrate. This is an OBS example, not a platform limit or universal recommendation. Check the current bitrate guidance for the specific platform and ingest method you use, and leave upload headroom so other network activity does not destabilize the stream.

Resolution and frame rate

Resolution is the pixel size of the encoded picture; frame rate is the number of frames sent each second. Higher values mean more visual information to encode and can increase processing and bitrate demands. Whether they improve the viewer’s experience depends on the source material, motion, available bitrate and playback conditions. Choose a combination the computer can encode steadily and the platform accepts rather than raising both settings by default.

Codec and container

A codec defines how the video is compressed. A container or stream format packages audio, video and related data for delivery. The platform’s ingest protocol determines which combinations it accepts. For YouTube, current protocol documentation lists H.264 for RTMPS, H.264 or HEVC for HLS, and H.264 or VP9 for DASH. These are YouTube protocol-specific options, not universal compatibility rules.

YouTube describes newer codecs such as VP9 and HEVC as more efficient than H.264: they can potentially deliver higher quality at a given bitrate or similar quality at a lower bitrate. The actual result depends on the encode and delivery path; do not assume that a more efficient codec is supported by every protocol or will automatically improve a particular stream.

Preset and keyframes

An encoder preset controls how much work the encoder spends compressing video. In x264, presets trade CPU use against encoding work; no preset is best for every computer and stream. A keyframe, also called an I-frame, is a reference frame in a group of pictures (GOP). Keyframes help receivers begin decoding and can affect stream health and transitions between viewer quality options. OBS recommends a consistent keyframe interval to help the quality selector transition smoothly.

YouTube’s Live API health guidance recommends a keyframe frequency of four seconds or less and flags problems such as open GOP settings or unsupported codecs. Treat that as YouTube-specific guidance, not a cross-platform standard; follow the current requirements for your chosen platform and protocol.

How do encoding choices affect quality, workload and stability?

  • Picture detail: At a fixed resolution and frame rate, too little bitrate can leave less information for complex images, producing visible compression. More bitrate may help, but only within the platform’s accepted settings and the connection’s reliable upload capacity.
  • Motion: Fast movement and changing scenes are harder to compress than a relatively static picture. A setting that looks clean for a still lecture slide may not be enough for fast documentary footage, sports or busy camera movement.
  • Computer load: Higher resolution, frame rate or more demanding encoding settings can increase CPU or GPU work. If the encoder cannot keep up, frames may be delayed or missed even when the internet connection is adequate.
  • Network load: A higher bitrate raises upload demand. If the connection cannot sustain it, viewers may see buffering or the platform may report an unstable stream.
  • Compatibility and delay: A codec or stream format can be efficient yet unusable if the ingest endpoint does not accept it. Some protocols also have different latency characteristics; platform guidance matters as much as image-quality goals.

Should you use software or hardware encoding?

Software encoding such as x264 uses the CPU. It can provide strong quality per bitrate, but encoding high-resolution, high-frame-rate video may impose a heavy CPU load. Hardware encoding moves work from the CPU to a specialized component in the GPU. OBS Project generally recommends hardware encoders for performance because they take work off the CPU, while noting that earlier hardware-encoder generations can deliver lower image quality at the same bitrate than x264 using its default veryfast preset.

Option Potential advantage What to check
Software (CPU), such as x264 Can provide strong quality per bitrate. Whether the CPU has enough headroom during the actual stream workload; higher resolution and frame rate can make encoding demanding.
Hardware (GPU encoder) Moves encoding work off the CPU and can have minimal performance impact. Encoder generation, compatibility and quality at the bitrate available to you; earlier generations may produce lower quality than x264 at the same bitrate.

Choose based on the computer you already have, the quality your platform permits at your bitrate and whether the stream remains stable under real workload. A graphics card with a hardware video encoder may fit someone whose current system cannot encode reliably or efficiently, but buying a GPU is not a universal requirement.

Why do streaming platforms have different settings?

Platforms accept different ingest protocols, codecs and packaging. YouTube describes RTMPS as a secure extension of RTMP; its protocol comparison also says HLS and DASH ingestion are encrypted and support codecs that RTMP/RTMPS do not. That flexibility can enable codecs such as HEVC or VP9, but does not mean every creator should choose those protocols.

YouTube says HLS and DASH typically incur greater latency than RTMP because they are segment-based. That is YouTube’s protocol guidance, not a universal latency measurement for every implementation. If low delay matters, compare the current protocol options and latency requirements for the exact platform and workflow before changing ingest settings.

YouTube HLS has specific requirements

YouTube’s HLS ingestion guide is specific to YouTube HLS, not to other platforms or YouTube protocols. It calls for muxed audio and video in M2TS; supports H.264 and HEVC video at up to 60 fps; requires closed GOP and a single AAC audio track; and says media segments are generally one to four seconds, with a five-second maximum. For HLS, YouTube asks the encoder to send one encoded stream at the highest resolution intended for viewers, with YouTube handling transcoding to other resolutions and bitrates.

These requirements should not be copied into an RTMPS setup or another service’s settings. YouTube’s Live API exposes stream resolution and frame-rate configuration, including variable detection, and reports health issues involving bitrate, codecs, resolution, frame rate, audio/video presence and keyframe frequency. Treat platform health messages as useful clues, then verify the current creator-facing guidance for the protocol you selected.

How to choose settings and diagnose problems

  1. Choose the platform and ingest protocol first. Check that protocol’s current requirements for codec, container or packaging, audio, resolution, frame rate and keyframes.
  2. Set a practical resolution and frame rate. Match the source and content; avoid asking the encoder to produce more than the computer and upload connection can sustain.
  3. Select an encoder and preset that remain stable. Try software or hardware encoding according to available CPU/GPU headroom, then check the platform’s stream-health feedback while the actual workload is running.
  4. Set bitrate using platform guidance and content motion. OBS’s x264 examples illustrate why high-motion footage may need more data than low-motion content, but are not a substitute for the platform’s current limits or your connection’s capacity.
  5. Configure keyframes and audio to the selected ingest method. For YouTube’s Live API health guidance, use a keyframe frequency of four seconds or less; other platforms and protocols may specify different requirements.
  6. Review stream health before relying on the setup. Look for reported bitrate, codec, resolution, frame-rate, keyframe or missing-audio/video issues, and change the setting the platform identifies rather than raising bitrate indiscriminately.

Common symptoms and fixes

  • Encoder overload or missed frames: The CPU/GPU may not keep pace with the chosen resolution, frame rate or preset. Reduce the encoding workload or use a compatible hardware encoder if available; confirm that the platform reports a healthy stream.
  • Buffering or unstable delivery: The bitrate may be too high for reliable upload capacity, or the connection may be contended. Lower bitrate within platform guidance and reduce competing upload activity.
  • Platform rejects the stream or reports codec errors: Check that codec and packaging match the selected protocol. YouTube’s accepted combinations differ by RTMPS, HLS and DASH.
  • Keyframe or GOP warning: Confirm the keyframe interval and GOP mode against the platform’s protocol-specific instructions. YouTube’s API health guidance flags unsupported codecs and open GOP settings.
  • Audio or video missing: Check that the encoder is sending both expected tracks and that audio format and packaging match the ingest method. YouTube HLS, for example, specifies a single AAC audio track in muxed M2TS.
  • Viewers cannot select a suitable quality: Transcoding availability depends on the platform and its current service behavior. Confirm whether it is producing alternate versions; do not assume a source stream will automatically be available at every resolution.
