Choose a podcast name that makes the show’s premise understandable, is easy to hear and spell, and still fits if the show evolves. Before you commit, compare your strongest candidates aloud and in search, check for conflicts, and write a description that explains what listeners will get.
Start with the promise of the show
Before brainstorming titles, write one plain sentence that says what the show is about, who it is for, and what listeners can expect repeatedly. For a documentary podcast, that might be a promise to investigate overlooked local histories or tell the stories behind a particular era. The sentence is a compass, not necessarily wording for the title.
A name can signal the subject, the audience, the host or format, a distinctive image, or the show’s tone. Try several directions rather than settling on the first literal description. A title that is only evocative may leave new listeners unsure what the show covers; a title that is only descriptive may be hard to distinguish from similar shows.
Make it easy to hear, spell, and find
Spotify advises creators to choose a name that is easy to hear, spell, and find, and cautions against creative spellings or unexplained abbreviations that complicate discovery. Read each candidate aloud. Then ask someone who has not seen it to write it down and search for it. If they mishear it, cannot spell it, or struggle to locate the show, treat that as a practical warning rather than assuming listeners will work it out. Spotify’s naming guide

Spotify reports that shows on Spotify for Creators average 3–4 words and 15–20 characters. That is a platform-specific average, not a rule or evidence that a title in that range will perform better. Use it as a prompt to test whether a candidate can be simpler, not as a limit that overrides clarity.
Do not add “podcast” automatically. Spotify’s 2022 advice notes that the format may already be clear and that generic wording can make a title less distinctive while people browse. There are cases where the word helps signal what a project is, but it should earn its place. Alex Bousquet, associate director of product marketing at Spotify, puts the trade-off this way: “Save the seven characters in ‘podcast’ to make your show name more unique, or to keep your show name short and simple.” Spotify’s 2022 naming advice
Choose a name that can grow with the show
A title can accurately describe the first run of episodes and still become a poor fit if the subject, format, or audience broadens. Ask whether the name would remain sensible years from now if you cover adjacent topics, bring in guests, or change the format. Spotify’s guidance encourages creators to think about whether the name will still make sense over time. Specificity can help explain a focused show, but avoid a promise so narrow that future episodes would feel out of place. Spotify’s naming guide · Spotify’s 2022 naming advice
Compare candidates with a consistent test
Put your finalists side by side and assess each on the same questions. These are practical screening criteria drawn from Spotify’s naming guidance and Apple’s metadata and rights requirements—not a formula for predicting audience growth.

| Test | Ask |
|---|---|
| Clarity | Can a new listener infer the subject or intended audience? |
| Distinctiveness | Does it stand apart in speech and writing from other names you find? |
| Sayability and spelling | Can someone hear it, repeat it, spell it, and search for it without extra explanation? |
| Flexibility | Would the name still fit if the show expands or changes format? |
| Accuracy and rights | Does it describe the actual show, and have you considered potential conflicts before investing in the brand? |
There is no evidence here that any one naming tactic causes more downloads. The test helps you make a clearer, more defensible choice; it cannot guarantee discovery or growth.
Check conflicts and keep the title accurate
Search podcast platforms and the wider web for similar names, and consider relevant rights before committing money to artwork, promotion, or merchandise. An exact-title search with no obvious match does not establish that a name is legally available. Apple requires metadata to represent the content accurately and prohibits infringement of others’ rights, including trademark rights. Its platform rule is not a complete legal-clearance process, so seek appropriate professional advice when a potential conflict matters. Apple Podcasts content and subscription guidelines

Use the description to explain what the title cannot
The description is another place to make the show’s promise clear. Say what it covers, who might care, and what benefit or perspective listeners can expect. Use the words your intended audience would naturally use when looking for that subject, without stuffing in unrelated terms. Apple recommends describing the topic and benefit, and notes that the app already displays the show name, so the description need not repeat it. Sharing a draft with a trusted reviewer can reveal where the wording is unclear. Apple’s show and episode metadata guidance

Choosing a name does not by itself publish a show. Apple says creators need an Apple Podcasts Connect account to submit a show, and submission also depends on feed and hosting requirements. For shows hosted through a third party, Apple’s episode guidance directs creators to add episode content through that provider. Treat those as launch steps after you have settled on an accurate title and description. Apple’s show submission guidance · Apple Podcasts requirements · Apple’s episode publishing guidance
