For a clear, stable game stream, build a simple OBS scene, make voice and game audio easy to distinguish, choose output settings your platform, computer and upload connection can sustain, and test before going live. The best settings are not automatically the highest ones: dropped frames or overloaded hardware can make a stream less dependable.
Build scenes around the broadcast
In OBS, a scene is the layout viewers see; sources are the elements inside it. A gameplay scene might combine the game, microphone, game audio and—if it suits your format—a webcam. OBS can also use windows, capture cards, images, text and display capture. Add only what helps viewers follow the broadcast, and keep overlays and text away from important game information. See the OBS Studio Overview Guide.
Give each scene one job
A small set of purposeful scenes is easier to manage than a crowded layout. For example, prepare a welcome scene, gameplay scene, break scene and ending scene. Switch with OBS hotkeys if useful, and rehearse transitions so you can operate them without distracting from play.
Keep the layout readable
- Check that the game remains the visual focus and that text is legible at the size viewers are likely to see it.
- Place webcam and alerts so they do not cover essential interface information.
- Confirm each source is visible in the intended scenes and that transitions do not reveal an unintended desktop or window.
Make voice and game audio intelligible
In OBS audio settings, select the microphone and desktop/game audio devices you actually intend to use. Listen to a recording or private test stream and adjust levels so speech can be understood over the game. There is no universal voice-to-game mix ratio established by the available guidance; judge the result by listening to your own output.

Check the signal, not just the meters
- Speak at your normal streaming volume and verify the intended microphone responds.
- Play game audio and confirm it is captured once, at a useful level, without unintended duplicate sources.
- Listen for room noise, distortion, echo or a voice that is masked by the game.
OBS supports multiple desktop audio and microphone/auxiliary devices, plus push-to-talk and push-to-mute hotkeys. A separate USB microphone is worth considering only if your current headset or microphone is genuinely limiting clear voice capture. Placement and room noise can matter, so identify the problem before buying gear. The 2022 UC San Diego study describes livestreaming equipment setups and tradeoffs; it is not a current product ranking: The Design Space of Livestreaming Equipment Setups.
Choose resolution, frame rate and bitrate for your setup
OBS separates the base (canvas) resolution from the scaled output resolution. Set the canvas for the composition you are arranging, then choose an output resolution appropriate for the destination and the performance your system and connection can sustain. Select frame rate with the same care: OBS notes that 60 fps can tax a system more than 30 fps, so test rather than assuming the maximum is best.

Use the destination platform’s requirements
Streaming settings are not interchangeable between services. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 and AV1 options, frame rates up to 60 fps, CBR, and a two-second recommended keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. It recommends RTMPS. These are YouTube-specific instructions, not universal presets; check the current requirements for your destination before configuring OBS. YouTube: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Keep bitrate within the real upload budget
Set bitrate with both the service’s current limits and your upload connection in mind. Leave enough headroom for a stable connection rather than consuming all available upload capacity. Twitch’s official Broadcasting Guidelines prioritize a stable stream over pushing quality until frames drop. OBS documentation has cited 6,000 kbps as an example Twitch maximum, but that example does not establish a definitive current cap for every Twitch feature or eligibility tier. Check Twitch’s live guidance for your account and feature before using a numeric limit.

Test before an important broadcast
Run a test with the same game, scenes, audio devices and output settings you plan to use live. OBS recommends testing before your first stream; a short check can reveal missing sources, incorrect levels and performance problems while there is still time to fix them.

- Check the stream for smooth playback and dropped frames; if problems appear, troubleshoot before increasing quality.
Troubleshoot dropped frames and unstable connections
| Symptom | What to try |
|---|---|
| Network-related dropped frames or unstable delivery | Lower bitrate, test another ingest server, and check the network path. OBS notes that Wi-Fi can be unstable and recommends a wired connection for streaming. |
| Connection problems continue at a lower bitrate | Check for software that may interfere with OBS and investigate the router, modem, cable or broader network path. If the cause is unclear, OBS recommends contacting your ISP before replacing equipment. |
| Dynamic bitrate keeps the stream going but image quality falls | Treat dynamic bitrate as a mitigation, not a root-cause fix. Diagnose the connection rather than assuming the issue has been resolved. |
| Game or stream performance suffers at a higher frame rate | Test a lower frame rate or output resolution and compare performance; 60 fps can require more system resources than 30 fps. |
Follow the steps in OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting. Avoid replacing hardware before checking bitrate, server choice, wired networking, software conflicts and ISP-side issues.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Record with editing and reuse in mind
OBS provides recording quality presets and hardware encoders where available. Its advanced recording options can support separate stream and recording settings and multiple audio tracks. If you plan to edit highlights, separate tracks can make it easier to work with voice and game audio independently; confirm that the recording format and editing workflow support the result, and account for storage space. Whether a computer can stream and record simultaneously at your chosen settings depends on its hardware, so test that workload on your own system.

Choose equipment only to solve a real production problem
A competent setup does not require every streaming accessory. Consider a purchase only after identifying a specific limitation in your current workflow.
| Equipment category | When it may help |
|---|---|
| Microphone | When your existing voice capture is unclear or otherwise inadequate after checking placement and room noise. |
| Webcam and lighting | When an on-camera format is part of the broadcast and your existing image or lighting needs improvement. |
| Capture card | When your particular console or camera setup requires one to bring its video into the streaming computer. |
| Programmable controller | When physical controls would address a demonstrated need in your scene-switching or broadcast workflow. |
These categories are options, not universal requirements. The cited UC San Diego study discusses variation in livestreaming setups, but does not establish that any one purchase is necessary or best for every streamer.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a different job—keeping uploaded, prerecorded video looping as a YouTube live stream—StreamNeo runs from the cloud. It does not capture a live game, camera or gameplay session, so it is not a replacement for the OBS workflow above when you want to broadcast play as it happens. For prerecorded channel content, the steps are: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it plays uploaded videos, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start a free day on StreamNeo.
