Engaging live-stream graphics make the important information easier to follow without hiding the action. Start with a canvas that matches your stream, include only useful labels or visuals, and preview the design in the actual production scene before going live. For conventional widescreen streams, OBS recommends a 16:9 canvas such as 1920Ă—1080 or 1280Ă—720.
Decide what the graphics need to do
Give each on-screen element a clear job. A graphic might identify a speaker, show a documentary title or topic, display a score, credit a sponsor, or tell viewers that the stream is starting or on a break. Choose elements that help viewers understand the program; decorative frames and animations are optional, and can become distracting when they crowd the footage.
Sketch the layout before adding assets. Mark the area where the main video or other essential content will appear, then place labels and supporting elements where they will not cover it. Keep text legible against its background and use strong contrast.
Choose the right canvas size and aspect ratio
Set the design dimensions to match the output canvas or target scene, rather than designing at an unrelated size and stretching it later. OBS Project recommends producing conventional widescreen content at 16:9, such as 1920Ă—1080 or 1280Ă—720. A mismatched graphic can be cropped or distorted when forced to fit; OBS warns that stretching can warp the source. See the OBS Project aspect-ratio guide.

These are recommendations for conventional widescreen production, not universal requirements for every destination or format. Check the current creator guidance for your platform and consider how the graphic will appear at different player sizes and on different devices.
Create the graphic and add it to OBS
For a static layout: use image and text sources
- Create or export the background, logo, or other visual assets you need. If an element should reveal the video beneath it, use an export with transparency.
- In OBS, select the scene where the graphic belongs and add an Image source for image assets or a Text source for labels. The names of some source options may vary by operating system or OBS version.
- Arrange sources in the scene so the graphic sits above the video or capture it annotates. Adjust position and size on the canvas, and check that it remains within the intended frame.
- Use a separate source for each element when you want to move or edit them independently. For a fixed composition, you can also prepare a single image asset and add it as one source.
OBS’s quick-start tutorial demonstrates a scene that layers a background image and text overlay with game capture. The same source-layering idea works for a documentary title card, speaker label, or break screen.

For a webpage or dynamic layout: use Browser Source
- Prepare the graphic as a local webpage or a page available at a URL.
- In the OBS scene, add a Browser Source and select the local file or enter the URL.
- Set the browser viewport dimensions to the intended graphic or canvas dimensions. Set a custom frame rate if the page needs it.
- Position and layer the Browser Source with the other scene sources, then preview it to confirm the page renders as intended.
OBS Browser Source can load a local file or URL and provides configurable viewport dimensions and frame rate. It is useful for webpage-based or dynamic graphics, but the result depends on the page rendering properly in that embedded browser. See the OBS Browser Source guide.
For a visual editor or template starting point
A design service can be useful if you want a visual editor or a template-based starting point. Canva documents creating stream overlays and exporting them for broadcasting software; its page recommends 1920Ă—1080. Check the service’s current export options and terms, and make sure the result matches your OBS canvas before using it. Canva’s current guidance is available at Canva’s overlay page.

Use transparency for overlays
For a frame, logo, or label that should sit over live footage without covering it with a solid rectangle, export the graphic with transparent areas. Elgato’s guide uses PNG for static transparent overlays and WEBM for animated-overlay examples. Support can vary by software and file, so confirm that your chosen format works in your setup and preview the exported asset before relying on it on air. See Elgato’s overlay guide.
Make the layout readable and adaptable
- Protect the main content: keep frames, social labels, and decorative elements away from faces, captions, key footage, or other action viewers need to see.
- Check contrast: verify text against both the graphic behind it and the footage that may show through transparent areas.
- Design for resizing: the player and browser window can change size. Twitch’s extension-design guidance advises accounting for resizing; treat it as a useful reminder to check your composition at more than one display size, not as a complete safe-area specification for every platform.
- Keep motion purposeful: animate only when movement communicates something useful or suits the program. Confirm that any animation behaves correctly in the scene.
Twitch’s guidance for extension layouts is at Twitch Developer: Designing Extensions. Platform display behavior and safe areas can differ by destination and device, so consult the chosen platform’s current creator documentation for specifics.

Preview before you go live
- Open each scene that uses the graphic in OBS and inspect it at the target canvas dimensions.
- Check that the design is not stretched, unexpectedly cropped, or opaque where transparency is intended.
- Verify that titles and labels remain readable and do not cover essential content.
- Test every scene transition and any animated or browser-based elements, including the break or starting scene.
- If the stream will be viewed at different player sizes, resize the preview or check a recording to see whether the layout remains clear.
This is a practical quality check based on OBS’s scene and aspect-ratio controls; it is not a claim that any particular graphic has been tested or will increase viewership.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which graphic workflow should you choose?
| Approach | Useful when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| OBS image and text sources | The layout is static and you want direct control over individual scene elements. | Elements are easy to place in scenes, but each independently editable element is managed as a source. |
| OBS Browser Source | The graphic is a webpage, changes dynamically, or is easier to maintain as one browser-rendered layout. | Viewport dimensions and frame rate are configurable, but the page must render as intended inside OBS. |
| Design service plus OBS | You want a visual editor or template-based starting point. | It can simplify asset creation, but you still need to verify export options, transparency, dimensions, and scene placement. |
Choose based on how dynamic the graphic needs to be, how you prefer to edit it, whether it needs transparency or animation, and whether it matches the stream canvas. These are workflow trade-offs, not a performance ranking.
