The best results come from identifying the source and its defects, treating each problem separately, and testing a short, representative clip before processing the full video.
What AI video restoration can—and cannot—do
“Restoration” is not one operation. Depending on the software, it may mean deinterlacing, noise reduction, upscaling, sharpening or focus correction, stabilization, and frame interpolation. These processes address different symptoms; applying all of them by default can change the appearance of the original.
Upscaling creates a larger output frame, not proof that newly visible texture or facial detail existed in the source. Enhancement models can generate a smoother or sharper-looking result, but that appearance is not necessarily faithful recovery. For example, Topaz’s enhancement guidance distinguishes a model that enhances footage from a restoration model, and says it will not remove film hairs and scratches or generate authentic detail. Treat AI output as an interpretation of the source, especially when historical accuracy matters.
Identify the source before choosing a tool
Preserve the original and record its properties
Keep an untouched copy of the digitized file. Make a separate working copy and note its resolution, frame rate, aspect ratio, and whether it is interlaced. These details influence which operations make sense and provide a reference if an export looks wrong.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Match the defect to the operation
- Interlacing: If the footage is interlaced, consider deinterlacing before other enhancement. Topaz documents separate Dione models for interlaced material; do not assume the same model path is right for progressive footage.
- Noise or grain: Use denoising conservatively. Strong reduction can erase fine texture along with unwanted noise.
- Camera shake: Stabilization may help if movement is a problem, but it can alter framing and crop the image.
- Soft or low-resolution image: Test upscaling and sharpening only after checking the source at its intended viewing size. A larger file is not automatically a more authentic one.
- Low frame rate: Frame interpolation can create intermediate frames, but it may change motion and the historical character of the footage.
- Physical damage: Scratches, hairs, dirt, and other defects may need dedicated restoration work; do not expect a general enhancement model to remove them reliably.
A careful AI restoration workflow
- Inspect the source. Watch the full video if possible and identify its format and the defects that matter most. Confirm whether it is interlaced rather than guessing from its age or appearance.
- Choose one initial task. Select a tool or model suited to the main problem, such as deinterlacing for interlaced footage or denoising for visible noise. Avoid stacking every available filter at the outset.
- Make a short test excerpt. Include motion, faces, fine texture, and the most difficult defect. A static, easy scene will not show whether the settings hold up across the video.
- Preview and adjust. Use the software’s preview controls where available. Topaz documentation describes distinct model paths and preview-oriented settings; its documentation also covers Dione models for interlaced sources. Try restrained settings before stronger ones.
- Compare output with the original. Review both at normal viewing size and enlarged. Check moving sequences as well as still frames: look for flicker, unstable detail, halos, waxy faces, smeared texture, odd motion, or a crop introduced by stabilization.
- Keep only changes that serve the footage. If sharpening, denoising, or interpolation makes the clip look less natural, reduce or omit that operation. A clean-looking still frame is not enough if detail shifts or flickers between frames.
- Process the full project only after the test works. Keep the original and working copy separate, and inspect the finished export rather than assuming the preview represents every scene.
Tools and workflow trade-offs
Topaz Video desktop software
Topaz describes Video for Mac and Windows as a desktop product with denoising, upscaling, focus restoration, stabilization, and frame interpolation, including workflows aimed at archival and low-resolution material. Its documentation describes different model paths for different footage, including Dione for interlaced input. Those are vendor-documented capabilities, not an independent quality ranking; suitability depends on the source and the result of your own test clip.
For DaVinci Resolve, Topaz says its plugin requires Resolve Studio. It also warns that performance and interface responsiveness can be reduced when upscaling by three to four times. Topaz’s Premiere panel is described as a free UXP panel that sends project media to Topaz Cloud; processing requires a Topaz account and paid cloud credits. Check current compatibility and terms on the vendor’s pages before choosing a workflow.

Preset workflows are starting points, not restoration rules
Topaz documents a “4K & 60 FPS” preset that uses Proteus for 4K upscaling and Apollo for frame interpolation, and a denoise preset using Nyx. Those presets show available product workflows; they do not establish that 4K or 60 fps is appropriate for every archival source. Preserve the source’s character and choose output settings for the actual footage.
Adobe Firefly online upscaler
Adobe describes an online Firefly video upscaler powered by Topaz Astra. Adobe says the resulting video can be downloaded as an MP4 or handed off to Premiere or Firefly’s video editor. This confirms an available workflow, not that it produces better results than other tools. Check the current service terms, availability, and output options before relying on it for a project.

Common problems and what to check
- Faces look waxy or details disappear: Reduce denoising or sharpening, and compare against the source at normal viewing size. The model may be smoothing away real texture.
- New detail looks invented: Treat it as generated enhancement rather than recovered evidence. Do not use it as a factual basis for identifying a person or interpreting a historical scene.
- Fine detail flickers between frames: Recheck the model and settings on moving footage. A convincing still does not guarantee temporal consistency.
- Motion looks unnaturally smooth: Disable or reduce frame interpolation and compare with the original frame cadence.
- The picture is cropped or composition changes: Check stabilization settings and framing; stabilization can alter the visible image area.
- Resolve plugin is unavailable: Confirm that you have DaVinci Resolve Studio; Topaz lists Studio as a requirement.
- Resolve feels sluggish during large upscales: Topaz warns that three-to-four-times upscaling can reduce performance and UI responsiveness. Try a smaller test or less aggressive scale before committing to the project.
- Premiere processing cannot start: The Topaz panel routes media through Topaz Cloud and requires a Topaz account and paid cloud credits. Verify account and credit access.
Cost and project considerations
Pricing, cloud-credit requirements, compatibility, and supported integrations can change. Check the relevant vendor pages at the time you choose a tool. Before paying or processing a long archive, test a representative excerpt and confirm that the workflow supports your editor, operating system, and source format. No independent benchmark establishes a quantified restoration gain across these tools, so judge the result on your own footage rather than assuming a particular resolution or frame rate will improve it.

Restoration software improves an existing recording; it does not keep a YouTube live stream running. If you want to run an uploaded, finished video as a 24/7 YouTube stream, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service: upload the video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos in the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It does not restore footage or stream from a camera.
