YouTube Live Control Room Settings for a Prerecorded 24/7 Stream

YouTube Live Control Room supplies the stream details, but the encoder sends and sustains the prerecorded feed. Learn the settings, testing steps, and limits to plan for.

YouTube Live Control Room creates or schedules a live broadcast and provides the stream URL and key; an encoder sends the video feed. There is no dedicated 24/7 prerecorded mode in the documented workflow, and YouTube does not promise uninterrupted operation. Keeping the feed running is the responsibility of the encoder and the systems it depends on.

What Live Control Room does—and what it does not

For a prerecorded broadcast, YouTube still receives a live feed from an encoder. Live Control Room handles the YouTube-side setup, stream details, preview, and live status. The encoder plays and sends the recording. The workflow does not itself keep a failed encoder or interrupted connection running, so a 24/7 plan needs reliable playback, connectivity, monitoring, and recovery outside the Control Room.

YouTube documents stream settings such as auto-start and auto-stop, but those controls govern starting or stopping a stream; they are not a guarantee that a failed feed will recover. Treat continuous operation as an operational goal to test, not a mode YouTube guarantees. See YouTube Help’s live stream settings and encoder setup guide.

Create or schedule the stream

  1. Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live. Choose the Stream flow to set up a broadcast now, or use Manage to schedule one. You can reuse previous settings, but review them rather than assuming they suit this broadcast. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.
  2. Set the listing details. Enter a title and description, choose privacy, and set a schedule if needed. YouTube offers public, private, and unlisted privacy options; the default can vary according to account age. Scheduled streams may appear as upcoming, and viewers can opt in to reminders.
  3. Choose the stream settings. Review latency, DVR, and auto-start/auto-stop. Their trade-offs are explained below. If you are reusing a stream setup, verify these controls and the metadata for the new broadcast.
  4. Copy the URL and key. In Stream settings, copy the stream URL and stream key into the matching fields in your encoder. YouTube describes stream keys as similar to a password and address: keep them private. If one is exposed, a channel owner or manager can reset it in Live Control Room, then replace the key in the encoder. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.
  5. Use RTMPS when supported. RTMPS sends RTMP over TLS/SSL. Open the lock control beside Stream URL to view the RTMPS endpoint, and check that the copied address begins with rtmps; the interface may show an ordinary RTMP URL by default. YouTube Help: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
  6. Start the encoder and check the preview. Wait for the feed to appear in Live Control Room. Check picture and audio, then select Go live for a scheduled stream. Watch stream health and messages while it runs. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Choose settings for a prerecorded continuous broadcast

Latency

Latency is the delay between capture and playback. Lower latency can increase buffering. If the broadcast is prerecorded and does not depend on real-time audience interaction, normal latency is a reasonable default: reducing delay usually matters less than steady playback. That is a practical inference, not a YouTube rule for 24/7 streams. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.

DVR

DVR lets viewers pause, rewind, and resume a live stream. YouTube warns that DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours, and viewers cannot seek back to a point before the stream began. If you change DVR while live, the change applies only to viewers who start playing after the change. Do not rely on DVR as a complete replay or rewind record for a long-running broadcast. YouTube Help: Turn on DVR on live streams.

Auto-start and auto-stop

These settings affect whether an encoder can start or stop a stream. They may be included when you reuse stream settings. They do not provide a recovery system if the encoder, feed, or connection fails.

RTMP/RTMPS or HLS

RTMPS is the secure RTMP option when your encoder supports it. HLS is a separate ingestion path intended for HDR or codecs that RTMP does not support. YouTube says HLS has higher latency because it sends segments and does not support ultra-low latency. Do not choose HLS just to make a prerecorded stream continuous; choose an ingestion method that matches the encoder and video format. YouTube Help: Set up an HLS stream.

Tags

Tags play a minimal role in discovery, according to YouTube, except when content is commonly misspelled. Add relevant tags if they help address likely spelling variations, but do not treat them as a major audience-growth setting. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.

Configure the encoder’s video and audio

YouTube’s published encoder guidance for RTMP/RTMPS lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; frame rates up to 60 fps; constant bitrate encoding; and a recommended keyframe interval of two seconds, not exceeding four seconds. These are YouTube’s technical recommendations, not independent performance-test results. Bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use the current official table for the exact format you will send.

For one concrete reference point, YouTube’s current table gives H.264 at 1080p30 a minimum bitrate of 5 Mbps and a recommended bitrate of 14 Mbps. Do not apply those values to other resolutions, frame rates, or codecs. Check YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions before configuring a different format.

Test, monitor, and preserve a copy

Test the encoder before going live. Check Live Control Room’s preview, stream health, and messages, and monitor both audio and video after launch. YouTube’s streaming tips also recommend testing encoder failover and checking that a local archive file continues to grow. If you need a complete copy of a long broadcast, make a local recording rather than relying only on YouTube’s archive. YouTube Help: Streaming tips.

Do not assume a 24-hour replay will be archived

YouTube’s encoder workflow says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not promise a complete archive for a 24-hour stream. DVR has its own caveat: it may be limited or unavailable beyond 12 hours, with lower limits on some devices and app versions. If a full replay matters, record locally and consider using shorter broadcast sessions. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and YouTube Help: Turn on DVR on live streams.

Troubleshoot common setup problems

  • No preview appears: Check that the encoder is running and that both the stream URL and key match the current Live Control Room settings. Recheck the selected RTMP/RTMPS endpoint if the encoder supports both.
  • The stream connects but YouTube reports health problems: Review the encoder output against YouTube’s current codec, bitrate, frame-rate, and keyframe recommendations. Confirm constant bitrate is enabled and use the bitrate row for the exact format rather than borrowing a value for another resolution or codec.
  • The broadcast stops after the encoder or connection drops: Auto-start and auto-stop do not guarantee recovery. Check the encoder’s failover or restart configuration, test it before relying on it, and monitor stream health and messages.
  • The stream key may have been exposed: Have a channel owner or manager reset it in Live Control Room, then update the encoder with the replacement.
  • Viewers cannot rewind far enough or find a full replay: DVR is not a substitute for a local recording, and neither DVR nor automatic archiving guarantees a full 24-hour replay. Keep a local copy if completeness matters.
