A live stream travels from an audio or video source through an encoder, across an internet connection to a platform’s ingest system, then through processing and distribution to viewers. Knowing the terms at each stage makes it easier to set up a stream and identify where a problem may be occurring. Platform recommendations vary, so use the linked official guidance for current settings.

1. Source capture: what goes into a stream

Live streaming

Live streaming is broadcasting audio and video over the internet in real time. A broadcaster sends a stream to a platform, which receives it and distributes it to viewers. Twitch describes this path as running over the public internet through its ingest system before onward distribution. Twitch’s streaming guidance explains the platform side of that path.

Audio/video source

The source is the material being streamed: for example, a camera, microphone, game console, or other audio/video feed. A camera and microphone are not prerequisites for streaming; Twitch notes that they are optional, though useful for on-camera presentation, voice, and collaboration. Twitch Creator Camp covers common starting setups.

2. Encoding: preparing the stream to send

Encoder and encoding

An encoder is software or hardware that prepares audio and video for transmission to a platform. Encoding is the process of compressing and formatting that material into a stream. The encoder might be software on a computer, a console or other device with streaming capability, or dedicated hardware; most creators do not need a separate encoder box. Twitch’s streaming guidance describes these options.

Codec

A codec is a method for compressing and decompressing audio or video. The codec affects how a stream is encoded and decoded, and available choices depend on the platform and the ingest protocol. Check both the destination’s current guidance and your encoder’s supported options rather than assuming every combination is compatible. Twitch explains codec terminology in its Inspector glossary; YouTube documents protocol-specific support in its live encoder settings.

Resolution

Resolution is the dimensions of the video image, commonly expressed by its pixel width and height. A higher resolution generally needs more bitrate and encoding capacity. If the encoder or connection cannot sustain the chosen settings, raising resolution alone will not guarantee a clearer picture. See Twitch’s streaming guidelines for its platform recommendations.

Frame rate / FPS

Frame rate, measured in frames per second (FPS), is how many individual video frames are sent each second. A higher frame rate can make motion appear smoother, but can also require more encoding resources and transmission capacity. Resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate work together; none is a universal quality control by itself. Twitch discusses the interaction in its streaming guidelines.

Bitrate

Bitrate is the amount of data sent per second, usually expressed in kilobits or megabits per second. Ingest bitrate is the rate your encoder sends to the platform; it is not the viewer’s download speed. More bitrate requires more upload capacity and may improve picture or sound only up to practical limits. The result also depends on resolution, frame rate, codec, and the stability of the connection. Twitch’s Inspector glossary and streaming guidelines provide platform-specific context.

CBR and VBR

CBR (constant bitrate) aims to send data at a steady rate; VBR (variable bitrate) changes the rate as the material demands. Twitch says to use CBR whenever possible on its platform, and YouTube also lists CBR in its encoder recommendations. Treat these as destination-specific recommendations, not a rule that applies identically to every service. Check the current Twitch guidance or YouTube settings for the platform you use.

Keyframe interval

A keyframe interval is the time between keyframes in the encoded video. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds in its live encoder settings. Twitch warns that changing its default can cause viewing problems on some devices, so follow the destination’s own guidance rather than transferring one platform’s setting to another. Twitch streaming guidelines describe its recommendations.

3. Upload and ingest: getting the stream to the platform

Ingest and ingest server

Ingest is the stage where a platform receives the broadcaster’s stream, identifies or authorizes it, and prepares it for distribution. An ingest server is the platform’s receiving endpoint. It is distinct from the encoder: the encoder sends, while the ingest system receives.

RTMP and RTMPS

RTMP stands for Real-Time Messaging Protocol. It is used for ingest by Twitch and supported by YouTube. RTMPS is a secure extension of RTMP; encryption protects the connection while stream data travels to YouTube’s servers. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings and streaming protocol guidance for current options.

HLS and DASH

HLS and DASH are HTTP-based, segment-oriented protocols that YouTube supports for ingest. YouTube’s published comparison lists additional codec support for HLS and DASH, which can matter for some high-resolution workflows, but segment-based delivery typically adds more latency than RTMP. These are YouTube-specific choices, not universal options across streaming platforms. Compare the current protocols and trade-offs in YouTube’s protocol guidance.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

RTMP URL / broadcast URL and stream key

An RTMP URL, also called a broadcast URL or server URL, identifies the platform endpoint that receives the stream. A stream key is the secret credential that authorizes the encoder to send to the associated channel or broadcast. They are not interchangeable: the URL tells the encoder where to connect; the key proves it is authorized. Never show or share a stream key. Twitch’s streaming guidance warns creators to protect it, and YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain where these settings fit.

4. Platform processing and viewer playback

Latency

Latency is the delay between capturing or sending the stream and the viewer seeing it. Ingest protocol and platform settings affect that delay. YouTube says HLS and DASH ingest typically have greater latency than RTMP because they are segment-based. Choose a protocol based on the platform’s supported modes and the balance you need between latency and codec or resolution support; see YouTube’s protocol comparison.

Distribution, buffering, and stream health

After ingest, the platform processes and distributes the stream to viewers. Buffering is playback waiting for more data, while dropped or unstable events describe interruptions or irregularities in what the platform receives. A symptom alone does not identify the cause: it could involve upload capacity, connection stability, encoding, or platform-side conditions. Use the destination’s health tools to inspect actual measurements. Twitch Inspector, for example, provides stream health and specification details: Twitch Inspector.

5. A practical way to use these terms when troubleshooting

  • If viewers report buffering or interruptions: check the platform’s stream-health information and compare the encoder’s ingest bitrate with the upload capacity available to it. Do not infer viewer download speed from ingest bitrate.
  • If the picture is unclear: review resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate together. Raising bitrate without enough stable upload capacity can make delivery less reliable rather than improving the result.
  • If the encoder cannot connect: confirm that its destination URL and stream key are correct for the platform, and check that the key has not been exposed or replaced.
  • If playback compatibility or delay matters: verify the platform’s current protocol and codec support, then weigh latency against the capabilities you need. Protocol availability and recommendations can change.

6. When a prerecorded YouTube stream needs to stay live

For a YouTube channel that needs to keep prerecorded material playing continuously, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Upload your video or playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; the uploaded quality streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the Monthly price is $9.99 per month. Start the free day with StreamNeo.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is RTMP? What is an RTMP URL or broadcast URL?

RTMP is a protocol used to send a live stream to an ingest endpoint. The RTMP URL or broadcast URL identifies that endpoint; the separate stream key authorizes the encoder to send to the channel or broadcast.

What do I need to start streaming?

At minimum, you need an audio/video source, an encoder (which may be software, a console, or hardware), an internet connection with suitable upload capacity, and the destination platform’s connection details. A camera and microphone are optional if your stream does not need them.
