Use Google Trends to compare a few candidate topics over the same location and time period, then check whether the interest is sustained, relevant to your audience, and answerable with a specific video. Treat the charts as clues—not view forecasts—and verify the opportunity in YouTube search and YouTube Studio before you plan the video.
1. Start with a viewer question
Write down the problem, task, or question a particular viewer might search for. A documentary channel might begin with a question about a historical event, a person, or a current issue. Turn that need into a small set of candidate searches rather than comparing dozens of loosely related ideas.
In Google Trends Explore, enter candidate phrases. Where the selector offers a relevant topic, compare it with an exact search term. A topic groups related searches and may include spelling or language variations; a search term represents the exact characters entered. Use a topic to assess broad interest in a concept and a term to test precise wording, a niche query, or a very new search that may not have a topic classification. 2. Make a fair comparison
Set the same geography and timeframe for every candidate. A comparison across different locations or date ranges can make one idea appear stronger for reasons unrelated to the topic itself. Compare a recent period with a longer one: this helps distinguish a continuing rise from a brief spike and reveals seasonal patterns that recur.

Use Google Trends’ quick-comparison controls to examine historical benchmarks against preceding periods. When a chart is blank or values are tiny, try a longer date range or fewer terms; low-volume searches may not produce visible data. See Google’s comparison guidance and troubleshooting advice.
3. Read the chart as relative interest, not search volume
Google Trends uses an anonymized, categorized, aggregated sample of actual searches. It divides interest by total searches for the selected geography and period, then scales the result from 0 to 100 according to the query’s proportion of all searches. The index is not a count: two places with the same score may have very different numbers of searches. A zero can mean too little data to display, and small changes can reflect statistical noise.

Look for direction, duration, seasonality, and consistency across signals rather than treating one high point as proof of a large audience. Google’s help page cautions: “Google Trends is not a scientific poll and shouldn’t be confused with polling data.” Read Google’s explanation of Trends data.
4. Use related searches to find a sharper angle
Under related searches, Top shows terms commonly searched in the same session; Rising shows terms with the greatest growth compared with the previous period. A Rising result marked Breakout has grown by more than 5,000% against that period, according to Google’s definition. That is a relative-growth label, not evidence of a large absolute audience: a query can rise sharply from a very low baseline.

Use the suggestions to uncover a sub-question, then ask whether it belongs on your channel and whether you can make a useful, specific video about it. The label alone does not make a topic suitable. Google’s related-search guidance defines Top, Rising, and Breakout.
5. Check YouTube Studio’s Trends tab
- Open YouTube Studio, go to Analytics, and select the Trends tab.
- Review the available top searches, audience-interest and recent-video cards, and videos from similar creators. The cards can help you see whether a broad search signal connects to your own audience or comparable channels.
- Look for a Shorts content gap if you are planning a Short. YouTube describes a content gap as a search for which results may be absent, lack an exact match, or be old or low quality. Treat that as a prompt to inspect the results, not a guarantee that your video will be recommended.
- Check the date range and evidence shown on each card before drawing a conclusion. YouTube describes top-search and some audience-interest or recent-video information in relation to activity over the last 28 days. Its audience-interest description refers to videos watched over 1,000 times per week and from the last 28 days; that is a description of the feature’s data basis, not a target for your video.
Availability of the Trends tab and its features varies by country, language, and device. YouTube says an updated Studio experience has been gradually rolling out from July 2026, so labels may differ. Consult YouTube’s Trends tab guide for the current description.

6. Turn a signal into a video promise
A trend is useful only when you can shape it into a clear answer for a defined viewer. Combine the query with a viewer, situation, and payoff. Instead of planning a video called “This topic is rising,” a documentary creator might frame it as “What beginners should know about this event this week” or “Why this historical question is appearing in current searches.” Choose an angle that fits the channel and can be supported by reliable material.
Search YouTube for the topic yourself. Check whether the current results are recent and relevant, what formats they use, and which questions remain unanswered. Google Trends does not establish that existing videos are poor, nor does a Studio content-gap signal prove that a new upload will receive views.

7. Keep a planning record and review performance
For each idea, record the exact term or topic selected, location, timeframe, date checked, chart pattern, related searches, evidence from Studio, and the proposed video angle. After publishing, compare the idea with your channel’s own performance data to learn what worked for your audience; Trends is a planning signal, not a substitute for analytics.
You can export charts to CSV if you need to compare them outside Google Trends. Google says reused Trends data should be attributed to Google Trends. Follow its export, embed, and citation guidance.
Useful distinctions and limits
- Trending Now is not the same as YouTube’s Trends tab. Google Trends’ Trending Now feature covers Google Search news trends, supports more than 100 countries and regions where applicable, refreshes data on average every ten minutes, and allows comparison of up to five queries. Those figures describe that Google Search feature, not audience-specific YouTube opportunity. See Google’s Trending Now guide.
- Missing data is not proof of no interest. Google Trends may show zero for low-volume searches. YouTube Analytics may also suppress low-volume traffic search terms, so an absent row does not prove that nobody searched. See YouTube’s explanation of limited Analytics data.
- Several signals are more useful than one. A sustained chart pattern, relevant related searches, a fit with your audience, and fresh YouTube results together make a stronger planning case than one noisy spike.
- Trends does not promise growth. The help material does not establish that using Google Trends causes more views, watch time, or channel growth. Judge actual results in your own channel analytics.
