Use YouTube Community posts to ask viewers what they want to see, keep a conversation going between uploads, and learn which topics and formats prompt responses. Treat posts as a way to build connection and gather feedback—not as a guaranteed way to gain views or subscribers: YouTube’s guidance does not quantify growth caused by posts.
What the Community tab can do for a channel
YouTube posts let you share text, polls, quizzes, GIFs, images, and video. Depending on the post and the viewer, they may appear on your channel’s Posts tab or Home shelf, in Home or Subscriptions feeds, and— for image posts— in the Shorts feed. YouTube may notify subscribers, but notification delivery is not guaranteed. See YouTube Help’s overview of posts for current feature details.
For a documentary channel, a post can invite viewers to choose a future subject, ask a question about a recent film, share a relevant behind-the-scenes image, or point to a collaboration. These uses create opportunities for participation; they do not establish that a particular post will increase reach.
Choose a post with a clear purpose
Ask viewers to choose what comes next
Use a poll when the options are short and distinct—for example, asking whether viewers would prefer a film about an expedition, an archival mystery, or a profile of a historical figure. YouTube’s current help page describes text and image polls with up to four options. A poll is useful for gathering preferences, but votes represent the people who chose to respond, not necessarily your whole audience.

Invite a considered answer
Ask an open question when you want context rather than a quick vote: “Which unanswered question should our next investigation tackle?” Make it specific enough to answer and relevant to the channel’s subject matter.
Preview or extend a video
Share a teaser, a relevant still, or a follow-up question that gives viewers a reason to discuss a forthcoming or recently published documentary. A post should add context or invite a response, rather than simply repeat an upload notice.

Share useful visual material
Choose an image, GIF, or video when the visual itself contributes something—a location detail, a production moment, or an archival image that viewers can discuss. YouTube documents up to 10 images in a post. Desktop creation options include text, video, poll, quiz, and image posts; available options can vary. See YouTube’s post creation instructions.
Build posts into a sustainable publishing rhythm
YouTube recommends a regular post schedule that complements video uploads. Its guidance suggests weekly conversation starters, polls, or follow-up questions, and a welcome post when opening a dedicated Community. Weekly is platform guidance, not a proven optimum for every channel. Choose a pace you can maintain and participate in: an unanswered prompt can feel less conversational than an occasional post followed by thoughtful replies.

- Plan around the video calendar. Identify a useful question, teaser, or follow-up for each stage of a documentary’s release.
- Make participation easy. Use a poll for simple choices; ask an open question when explanations matter; use a visual format when the image or clip is meaningful.
- Return to the conversation. Reply to comments and viewer posts where appropriate, and acknowledge useful suggestions in later posts or videos.
- Adjust to capacity and response. Keep a cadence that allows you to moderate and engage rather than posting more often than you can manage.

Review post performance in YouTube Studio
Use analytics as feedback about what viewers responded to, not proof that posts caused channel growth. In YouTube Studio Analytics, open the Content tab and sort or filter by Posts to review impressions and top posts by likes or votes. - Compare posts with a similar purpose and format where possible—for example, poll against poll, rather than poll against video.
- Look at topic as well as format: a strong response may reflect the subject, the way the question was framed, or both.
- Review more than one time window before changing your approach based on a single post.
- Track relevant channel outcomes separately. Impressions, likes, and votes alone do not show that a post generated subscribers or views.
YouTube notes that post type can affect impressions, so unlike formats should not be treated as directly equivalent. Its guidance says returning casual and regular viewers are more likely to be recommended more videos from a channel; that does not establish that Community posts themselves trigger recommendations. Posts are unavailable to supervised accounts and channels set as made for kids; YouTube also says posts are not currently available in Germany. Access can depend on channel role, and a feature may not appear for every channel. Check YouTube Help’s current eligibility and feature information if you cannot find it.

Do not confuse the Posts feature with a dedicated Community space. YouTube describes the latter as a place where subscribers can start discussions and share material; it has separate eligibility criteria, including existing posts access, age over 16, and channel restrictions. Community-only posts also have different visibility from Posts-tab posts. Community content must follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines. Creators can use moderation settings, set expectations, and assign trusted moderators for a Community space.
