The best live streaming setup is the smallest one that reliably handles your video source, audio, and encoding. Start with a computer and a camera you already have; choose a microphone connection that fits your workflow; add a capture card only for a separate HDMI source, lighting only if your room needs it, and control hardware only when it simplifies repeated actions. No single gear list fits every creator.
What equipment do you need to start live streaming?
A basic computer-based setup has four jobs: provide a video source, capture clear audio, combine and encode the stream, and send it to the streaming platform. Those jobs may be handled by built-in equipment, the computer, or add-on devices. Twitch’s setup guide emphasizes that the computer is part of the streaming system because it must encode and transmit audio and video (Twitch’s getting-started guide).
- Computer and streaming software: The computer must be capable of handling the capture, mixing, encoding, and transmission your particular workflow requires. AVIXA lists OBS Studio among software options (AVIXA’s live streaming equipment guide), but the cited guidance does not establish a universal computer specification.
- Video source: A built-in camera or webcam is a straightforward starting point. A dedicated camera can be useful for a separate camera workflow, but verify how its output connects to the computer and streaming software.
- Microphone: A USB microphone connects directly to the computer. A conventional XLR microphone needs an audio interface or mixer with USB output.
- Internet connection: Your stream must be transmitted over a connection that can sustain the chosen broadcast settings. The sources cited here do not establish a universal bandwidth target; check the platform and software requirements for your intended stream.
Add equipment to solve a specific problem, not simply because it appears on a creator gear list. If your current setup already provides the picture, sound, and encoding path you need, extra hardware may add cost and setup work without addressing a real limitation.
Choose a microphone and connection
USB microphone: the simpler computer connection
A USB microphone can connect directly to a streaming computer, avoiding a separate interface for that connection. It is a practical path when you want a direct computer input and do not need to connect conventional XLR equipment. The microphone still needs to suit your placement and room; the cited sources do not establish a universally best model.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
XLR microphone: add an interface or mixer
A standard XLR microphone does not connect to a computer by itself. Use an audio interface or mixer that accepts the microphone and provides USB output to the computer. Twitch’s guide describes an interface or USB-equipped mixer as necessary for using standard live-performance audio gear with a streaming computer (Twitch’s getting-started guide).
AVIXA names a Shure SM7B dynamic microphone paired with a Focusrite Scarlett Solo interface as an example setup (AVIXA’s guide). Treat that as an illustration of the microphone-plus-interface pathway, not a current price recommendation or a guarantee of sound quality with every voice and room.
Decide by connection and workflow
- Choose USB when a direct computer connection meets your needs.
- Choose XLR plus an interface or mixer when you want to use an XLR microphone with the computer.
- Before buying, confirm that the microphone’s connection, the interface or mixer if needed, and your streaming software work together.
Pick a camera path before buying capture gear
Built-in camera or webcam
A laptop’s built-in camera or a webcam is the most direct video path for a computer-based setup. Twitch’s guide describes options ranging from a laptop camera to a dedicated camera connected through capture equipment (Twitch’s getting-started guide). Upgrade only if your current camera fails to provide the framing, image, or placement you need.

Dedicated camera and HDMI capture
If you want to bring a separate camera or another HDMI video source into a computer, check whether a capture device is needed to ingest that source. Confirm the camera’s output, capture device, computer connection, and broadcast application are compatible before purchase. A capture card is a solution for a separate source, not an automatic requirement for every live stream.

For console output or a separate camera, a capture device may provide the needed input path. The right choice depends on where the video originates and how it reaches the streaming computer.
Check compatibility at the device level
Compatibility can depend on format and configuration. RØDE’s support guidance for RØDECaster Video and Video S says connected cameras or capture devices should be configured to 1080p at 24 fps using a compatible UVC format (RØDE’s supported USB video devices guidance). This is specific to those RØDE products; it is not a general requirement for all capture cards or streaming rigs. Check the actual device documentation for the hardware you plan to use.

Add lighting when the room or framing calls for it
Lighting is a separate choice from the camera itself. A dedicated light may help when the room does not provide the look you want, but the right setup depends on ambient light, available mounting space, and the camera framing. AVIXA discusses lighting as part of streaming equipment, and Logitech G presents configurable lighting in its creator gear material (AVIXA’s guide; Logitech G creator gear).
There is no universal brightness or placement threshold established by those sources. Consider where the light can be mounted, whether it fits the shot, and whether your current room lighting is actually a problem before choosing a dedicated light.

- Trace the signal path: Identify where the video and audio originate and how each reaches the streaming computer or encoder.
- Confirm connections: Match USB and XLR audio needs, camera outputs, capture-device inputs, and computer ports.
- Check format compatibility: Consult the documentation for the exact camera, capture device, and production hardware rather than applying one manufacturer’s settings to all devices.
- Assess the room and desk: For lights and mounted equipment, account for usable space and the frame you want.
- Separate essentials from convenience: A control pad is an optional shortcut; a capture device is relevant only when the workflow calls for ingesting a separate source.
- Check current prices and models directly: Manufacturer examples in the cited material do not establish current pricing or a current best-value recommendation.
