To rotate videos in a YouTube live stream, arrange playback in the source or encoder that sends the live feed. YouTube’s playlist-loop control repeats a playlist for someone watching it; it does not feed playlist videos into a live broadcast. YouTube’s live-stream guidance describes encoder-based streaming but does not document an integrated live playlist rotation control.
Why a YouTube playlist does not rotate videos in your live broadcast
YouTube’s playlist loop is a playback control for viewers. It repeats videos while someone watches a playlist on YouTube; it does not send those videos into a live stream. Likewise, a series playlist is a collection for viewers to watch together, not a live playback queue.
For a broadcast, your live feed comes from a streaming method such as an encoder. The continuous sequence therefore needs to be set up in the playback source or encoder that supplies that feed. YouTube documents stream keys, stream URLs and encoder controls, but its live-stream settings guidance does not describe a built-in playlist rotation feature.
Set up an automatic video sequence
- Choose your playback route. YouTube describes software encoders for computer streaming and recommends hardware encoders for higher-production events. Pick a setup suited to your production and planned duration; YouTube’s general guidance does not say hardware is required.
- Check the source or encoder’s playback features. Confirm it can play the videos you intend to use in sequence and repeat them automatically. Feature support varies, and YouTube’s guidance does not verify a particular encoder’s playlist or repeat behavior.
- Connect the encoder to the live stream. Use the stream key and URL associated with your YouTube live-stream setup. Keep the key private: it authorizes the encoder to send video to your stream.
- Start playback and inspect the preview. Before relying on the broadcast, check that the intended video appears and that the sequence advances or repeats as expected. YouTube recommends checking the preview and monitoring audio and video quality for encoder events.
- Monitor the running stream. Confirm playback continues through a full cycle and that audio remains usable at transitions. Keep an eye on both the source playback and YouTube’s live preview.
Software encoder or hardware encoder?
YouTube documents both as broad ways to send a live feed. The practical question is whether your chosen setup supports the video source and repeat behavior you need, and whether you can configure and monitor it reliably for the planned stream.

Plan for long streams and archives
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. It recommends keeping a local backup recording. For streams longer than 12 hours, DVR features may also be limited or unavailable, so viewers may not be able to pause or rewind as expected. Common problems and fixes
- The playlist loops only for viewers, not in the broadcast: that is expected. Move the sequence and repeat setup to the encoder or playback source that supplies the live feed.
- The sequence stops after one video: check the source or encoder’s repeat and queue settings. Do not assume a YouTube playlist or series playlist controls the live feed.
- The live preview does not show the intended video: verify the selected source and the stream key and URL used by the encoder, then check the preview again before relying on the stream.
- The stream runs for more than 12 hours: make a local recording backup and account for the possibility that YouTube may not archive the stream or provide full DVR controls.
