They are different tools, not competing versions of the same playlist. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads a text script that lists whole local files and presents their packets in sequence. An HLS media playlist is a manifest for media segments delivered using HLS. Use the concat demuxer to sequence compatible files as an FFmpeg input; use an HLS media playlist when delivering segmented content to YouTube through HLS. YouTube says it supports HLS media playlists for ingestion and ignores HLS master playlists.
First, identify which “playlist” you mean
“Playlist file” can describe two distinct things. An FFmpeg concat script is a text input file listing media files for FFmpeg to read in sequence. An HLS .m3u8 media playlist indexes media segments for HLS delivery. One is a way to join local inputs inside FFmpeg; the other is part of a streaming protocol. Neither is a substitute for the other.
| Your goal | Use | Important constraint |
|---|---|---|
| Feed compatible local video files one after another as a single FFmpeg input | Concat demuxer and its text script | Files need matching streams, codecs, and time bases; duration accuracy affects timestamps. |
| Join clips that need re-encoding or format normalization | Concat filter | Unlike the demuxer, the filter can be used in a re-encoding workflow. |
| Deliver segmented media to YouTube over HLS | HLS media playlist and media segments | YouTube’s HLS ingestion requirements apply; master playlists are ignored. |
When the concat demuxer fits
The concat demuxer reads a text file containing file paths and directives, then demuxes the listed files in sequence as if their packets had been muxed together. It is a local input mechanism; it does not create an HLS playlist. FFmpeg’s documentation says the files must have the same streams, including the same codecs and time base. It adjusts timestamps using file durations, so inaccurate durations or unequal stream lengths can produce gaps or transition artifacts.
Use it when
- The source files have compatible stream layouts and encoding parameters.
- You want FFmpeg to read whole files in order without first making an HLS segment set.
- You have checked that duration and timing differences will not make the sequence discontinuous.
Do not assume that arbitrary clips can be joined cleanly with stream copying. If the clips have mismatched codecs, stream layouts, or timing, the demuxer may fail or produce a bad transition. FFmpeg’s FAQ points to the concat filter for cases that need re-encoding. The correct command depends on the files and on the YouTube ingest protocol; the title alone does not establish those details.

When an HLS playlist fits
FFmpeg’s HLS muxer creates a playlist file and media segments. This is separate from reading a concat script as input. For YouTube HLS ingestion, use a media playlist: YouTube’s documentation says that master playlists are ignored. Its documented requirements include HTTPS, persistent connections, one encoded stream, and muxed audio and video. Check the current YouTube HLS guide and FFmpeg documentation before configuring an actual delivery, because protocol setup depends on the intended source and output.
Do not confuse playlist types
- Concat script: tells FFmpeg which local files to read in sequence.
- HLS media playlist: describes media segments for HLS delivery.
- HLS master playlist: an index that can point to variant playlists; YouTube says it ignores master playlists for HLS ingestion.
Choose based on the media and delivery path
- Check what you have. If you have whole local recordings to sequence, assess their streams and timing. If you already have or need segmented HLS media, assess the playlist and delivery requirements instead.
- Decide whether stream copying is viable. The concat demuxer is appropriate only when the input files meet its compatibility requirements. If they need normalization or re-encoding, consider the concat filter workflow.
- Confirm the ingest protocol. A concat script is not an HLS delivery manifest. If you choose HLS for YouTube, configure the media playlist and segments to meet YouTube’s documented requirements.
- Validate the sequence and transmission. Check transitions, timestamps, audio/video continuity, and the behavior of the chosen YouTube ingest path before relying on a long-running stream.
Keep a YouTube stream running without maintaining an FFmpeg setup
If your goal is a continuous YouTube stream from uploaded recordings rather than building and operating your own FFmpeg workflow, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only.
