For a conventional 1080p30 SDR YouTube Live stream, use H.264 at YouTube’s recommended 14 Mbps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a keyframe every 2 seconds. Set progressive 1920×1080 video at 30 fps with Rec. 709 color, and AAC stereo audio at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz. To loop a file playlist, use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer with -stream_loop -1; use -re to read files at their normal playback rate. The command below is a starting point, not a tested, universal recipe: check the source files, installed FFmpeg version, and YouTube Live Control Room settings before relying on it.
Recommended YouTube Live settings for 1080p30
YouTube’s encoder guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, gives codec-specific ingest targets for 1080p at 30 fps. These are recommendations for the signal sent to YouTube, not guarantees about how every source video will look at a given bitrate. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists:
| Ingest codec | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| AV1 | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| H.265 (HEVC) | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
H.264 is a straightforward baseline for the example command because it uses FFmpeg’s libx264 encoder. AV1 or H.265 may suit a setup with a supported encoder and enough real-time encoding capacity, but they have different encoder requirements. Choose based on what your FFmpeg build and hardware can sustain; the bitrate target alone does not establish which codec is best for a particular source.
Video and audio baseline
- Video: 1920×1080, progressive, 30 fps, square pixels, Rec. 709 color, 8-bit.
- H.264 bitrate: target 14 Mbps; YouTube’s stated minimum is 5 Mbps for this resolution and frame rate. Use the corresponding AV1 or H.265 target if you choose either codec.
- Rate control: CBR, as YouTube recommends.
- Keyframes: every 2 seconds; YouTube says the interval should not exceed 4 seconds. At 30 fps, a fixed two-second interval corresponds to a 60-frame GOP.
- Audio: AAC stereo at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz, YouTube’s documented recommendations.
YouTube’s advanced encoder guidance also lists CABAC, two B-frames, and one reference frame. Treat those as encoder parameters to check against the encoder you actually use; the illustrative command below does not explicitly set each of them. YouTube may detect encoder settings automatically in Live Control Room. If you need manual resolution or frame-rate settings, choose a custom stream key configuration there. YouTube’s stream setup instructions explain the setup flow.

Loop a playlist with FFmpeg
The concat demuxer reads a text file of media paths in order. -stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely, while -re paces file input at its native rate instead of letting FFmpeg read and encode it as quickly as possible. These are separate controls: concat defines the ordered playlist, looping repeats it, and real-time pacing makes file playback suitable for a live destination. FFmpeg documents these options in its concat demuxer documentation and command-line documentation.
1. Create the playlist file
Save a text file such as playlist.txt beside the media, with one entry per line and the intended playback order:
file 'clip-01.mp4'
file 'clip-02.mp4'
Use paths that the FFmpeg process can access. The example command uses -safe 0 to allow paths that may not meet the concat demuxer’s default safety rules. Only use that option with a playlist you control, and consult the FFmpeg documentation for the installed version’s path-safety behavior.

This is an illustrative command shape, not a validated command for every playlist or FFmpeg build. The bitrate and GOP values express a 14 Mbps H.264 target and a 60-frame interval at 30 fps. Check the installed FFmpeg version’s options and the selected encoder’s behavior. The command also assumes the input files can be handled together with the chosen output settings.
The -r 30 and -s 1920x1080 options set output frame rate and size, but they do not resolve every possible mismatch in a mixed playlist. Files may differ in dimensions, frame rates, audio presence, codecs, timestamps, or aspect ratio. Depending on the inputs, you may need explicit stream mapping, scaling and frame-rate filters, audio handling, or timestamp adjustments. Do not assume that concat alone normalizes media or creates seamless transitions.

3. Match the destination and protect the key
In YouTube Live Control Room, copy the RTMPS ingest URL and its associated stream key; do not reuse the literal placeholder in the example. YouTube recommends RTMPS when supported. Never publish or share the key. If it is compromised, rotate it in Live Control Room and update the FFmpeg destination to use the replacement. YouTube’s stream setup guide covers creating and configuring a stream.
Preflight checks before going live
- Confirm every playlist entry exists and can be read, and inspect representative files for video codec, dimensions, frame rate, audio presence, and timestamps.
- Check that the machine can encode the chosen output in real time. Sustained upload capacity must exceed the configured stream bitrate, with room for operational variation; YouTube does not specify one universal headroom figure in its cited guidance.
- Test with representative movement and audio, then review YouTube’s stream-health messages before relying on the stream for an event.
- Keep the computer and network connection running for the entire DIY stream. If FFmpeg exits or the machine loses connectivity, this command does not itself provide an always-on cloud process or automatic recovery.
Troubleshooting common failures
YouTube reports unstable or insufficient bitrate
Check the selected codec’s bitrate target, confirm the connection can sustain the configured upload, and look at YouTube’s stream-health messages. If the encoder cannot maintain the target, reduce the output bitrate only with the understanding that it will be below YouTube’s recommended target; avoid choosing a value below the stated minimum for the codec and format.
The stream is rejected or the destination is unavailable
Verify that you copied the current RTMPS URL and matching key from Live Control Room, that the stream is configured as intended, and that the key has not been rotated. A key mismatch or stale destination prevents the encoder from reaching the intended live stream.

FFmpeg cannot open a playlist file
Check the playlist syntax, spelling, working directory, and path accessibility for the account running FFmpeg. If paths require -safe 0, only enable it for a playlist you trust; otherwise use paths compatible with the demuxer’s safe defaults.
Audio is missing or inconsistent
Some playlist entries may have no audio stream or may use incompatible audio properties. Inspect each file and set stream mapping or audio handling to suit the actual inputs; the example’s AAC output options do not guarantee that every arbitrary input will produce the intended audio.
Playback stutters, changes shape, or has gaps at transitions
Mixed frame rates, dimensions, timestamps, and codecs can require normalization before a consistent live output is possible. Inspect the affected files and adapt filters and mapping to them. The concat demuxer by itself does not promise gapless or seamless transitions.
The stream stops when the laptop or home connection stops
A local FFmpeg process depends on the computer, power, and network remaining available. For a continuous channel, you can instead upload recordings to StreamNeo, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; the service loops uploaded videos from the cloud. It does not stream a camera feed.
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, upload your recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. The service is for YouTube streams of uploaded videos, not camera broadcasts.
