Python can create a separate scheduled YouTube Live event for each occurrence of a chosen weekday and time. The YouTube Live Streaming API does not provide a weekly recurrence rule: your scheduler must calculate each date and call liveBroadcasts.insert for it. If by “playlist” you mean a queue of recorded videos automatically played out as a live stream, the documented playlist API operation does not do that. Scheduling an event, sending its live video feed, and adding a video to a playlist are separate tasks.

First decide what “schedule a playlist” means

There are two different workflows behind that phrase:

  • Recurring live events: Create a new scheduled broadcast every Tuesday, or on another chosen weekday. Python can automate event creation by calculating each occurrence and calling YouTube’s API.
  • Recorded videos in a playlist: YouTube’s playlistItems.insert operation adds an existing video to a playlist. It is not documented as a way to schedule that playlist to play automatically as a live program.

A scheduled live broadcast is also not the video feed itself. YouTube treats the broadcast as an event and the live stream as the feed sent to YouTube. Creating the event does not capture or transmit video; you need an encoder or another supported streaming method to send the feed when the event starts.

Choose Studio or Python

Approach Best fit What it does What you still manage
YouTube Studio A small number of events or a schedule you manage manually Schedule a stream in Live Control Room and reuse settings from a previous stream. Viewers may see an upcoming stream and opt into a notification. Create each event and ensure a video feed is sent at the start time.
Python and the YouTube Live Streaming API Repeated event creation or a schedule connected to another system Create one scheduled broadcast per calculated occurrence using liveBroadcasts.insert. OAuth authorization, time-zone and daylight-saving behavior, duplicate prevention, error handling, monitoring, and the separate video feed.

YouTube recommends a sustainable schedule and consistent communication with viewers. Studio is simpler when manual setup is sufficient; Python is useful when the dates need to be generated automatically. Neither option, by itself, transmits video.

Check channel eligibility and API access

  • YouTube’s current Help guidance says live streaming requires a verified channel, no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and a creator aged 16 or older. Check the current eligibility requirements at YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.
  • The API call requires authorization with an appropriate YouTube scope. The liveBroadcasts.insert reference lists the youtube and youtube.force-ssl scopes.
  • Use credentials for the channel that will own the broadcast. Do not expose OAuth credentials or stream keys in source code, logs, or public repositories. YouTube describes a stream key as a credential that tells YouTube where to accept the feed.

Schedule one weekday occurrence at a time

  1. Choose the local time and time zone. Decide, for example, that each event should begin at 7 p.m. in a named time zone. Do not treat a fixed UTC hour as the same local time throughout the year: daylight-saving changes can shift the relationship. Decide explicitly how your scheduler handles ambiguous or nonexistent local times at a clock change.
  2. Calculate the next intended date. Find the next occurrence of the chosen weekday and combine it with the intended local start time. Convert that time to an aware datetime, then to the corresponding ISO 8601 instant for the API request.
  3. Build the broadcast request. Supply a title, future snippet.scheduledStartTime, and status.privacyStatus. Choose public, private, or unlisted deliberately; do not assume a channel’s Studio defaults match your audience or test plan.
  4. Call liveBroadcasts.insert. Use the authorized YouTube API client to create the event. The method creates a dated broadcast, not a recurring weekday series.
  5. Record the result before the next run. Store the intended occurrence and the returned broadcast ID in durable storage. Check that record before creating an event so a retry or restarted job does not produce a duplicate.
  6. Run the scheduler persistently. Use a service or scheduled job that will run when your computer is off, and generate events far enough ahead for YouTube to accept them. The API reference requires a future start time and says it must be close enough to the current date for reliable scheduling, but does not specify a fixed maximum horizon.
  7. Send the video feed separately. Configure and start your encoder or other supported stream method for the scheduled event. Confirm that it is connected to the intended broadcast; event creation alone does not put video on air.

Python request outline

This is an API request outline, not a complete runnable program. It assumes that you have already installed and configured an authorized YouTube API client, calculated a time-zone-aware future start time, and implemented persistence, retries, and error handling.

broadcast = youtube.liveBroadcasts().insert(
    part="snippet,status",
    body={
        "snippet": {
            "title": title,
            "scheduledStartTime": start_time.isoformat(),
        },
        "status": {
            "privacyStatus": privacy, # public, private, or unlisted
        },
    },
).execute()

The request fields follow the official insert method reference. A complete implementation still needs OAuth client setup, correct time-zone handling, validation, error recovery, and duplicate protection.

Add an existing video to a playlist

If your goal is to organize a completed stream archive, add the video after it exists with the separate playlistItems.insert method. You need a playlist ID, a video ID, and authorization for an account that can edit the playlist.

item = youtube.playlistItems().insert(
    part="snippet",
    body={
        "snippet": {
            "playlistId": playlist_id,
            "resourceId": {
                "kind": "youtube#video",
                "videoId": video_id,
            },
        },
    },
).execute()

The playlistItems.insert reference documents a quota impact of 50 units per call. Confirm the IDs and playlist permissions, and handle errors such as a video already being in a series playlist or an unsupported playlist operation. This API call organizes an existing video; it does not schedule playlist playback as a live stream.

Common failures and fixes

  • The start time is rejected: Check that it is still in the future, correctly converted from the chosen time zone, and within a horizon YouTube can reliably schedule. Recalculate rather than reusing a stale timestamp.
  • The API returns an authorization or permission error: Confirm the OAuth scope, authorized account, channel live-stream eligibility, and access to the intended channel. The insert reference also documents invalid privacy values, rate limits, and broadcast limits as possible error categories.
  • The event exists but nothing is streaming: Start and verify the encoder or other supported feed method separately. Check that the feed is using the correct stream key and is associated with the intended event.
  • Two events appear for one weekday: A job may have retried after creating the broadcast but before saving its ID. Persist each successful result and check the occurrence record before retrying; make the operation idempotent in your own scheduler.
  • The event shifts by an hour seasonally: Store the intended local time and named time zone, then convert each occurrence. Do not schedule every occurrence at one fixed UTC offset if the desired local time must stay constant.
  • A playlist insertion fails: Verify that the video already exists, both IDs are correct, and the authorized account can edit the playlist. Check for the endpoint’s documented duplicate or unsupported-operation errors.
  • Viewers cannot access the event: Review the broadcast’s privacy status and your Studio audience settings. Test with private or unlisted visibility when appropriate before making a public event.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a YouTube channel that stays live by looping uploaded videos, rather than a Python-created event that you feed with an encoder, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It keeps the stream running without a computer or home connection staying on. Each slot streams what you upload at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required.

Monthly: $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide. Start at StreamNeo’s free first day.
