Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTo stream a pre-recorded video as a 4K 60fps HDR YouTube Live broadcast, add the file to OBS as a Media Source, set your scene and output to 3840Ă—2160 at 60 fps, and use a compatible hardware HEVC encoder configured for Main 10 and 10-bit HDR. You also need a genuinely HDR source, a matching PQ or HLG color setting, and an upload connection that can sustain the bitrate. A 4K60 file alone does not make the live output HDR.
Before you start: check the file and your system
Confirm the source is actually HDR
Inspect the video’s frame size, frame rate, codec, and HDR transfer and color metadata. If the source is SDR, choosing an HDR output setting or enlarging it to 4K cannot restore HDR highlights or color information. Match OBS’s color handling to the source rather than selecting PQ or HLG by guesswork.
Confirm OBS and the encoder expose the required options
YouTube’s documented OBS HDR workflow calls for OBS 30.1 or later, at least one HDR source, and a hardware HEVC encoder that supports Main 10 output. The setup uses P010 (4:2:0) and Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG; YouTube recommends HLG. Verify those options are available in your installed OBS build and on your computer before scheduling the broadcast. Compatibility depends on the operating system, OBS build, and encoder hardware; no particular graphics card is guaranteed by these requirements. YouTube’s HDR live-streaming guidance describes the supported path.
Check upload capacity
YouTube’s live encoder settings list an ingestion range of 10–40 Mbps for 2160p60 AV1/H.265 and a recommended 35 Mbps for 2160p60 H.264. Those are YouTube’s published settings, not a guarantee that a particular connection or encoder can sustain them. YouTube recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Choose a bitrate your connection can reliably maintain with headroom; do not treat an advertised peak upload rate as usable capacity. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Add and configure the pre-recorded video in OBS
- Create or select a scene. In the OBS Sources panel, add a Media Source and select the local video file. OBS Media Source supports common formats including MP4, TS, MOV, MKV, AVI, FLV, WebM, and GIF. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
- Choose playback behavior. Enable Loop if the video should restart when it reaches the end; leave it off for a one-pass event. Set the source’s restart behavior as appropriate when it becomes active, and decide whether it should disappear when playback ends.
- Set the scene output. Set the output canvas and frame rate for the intended 3840Ă—2160, 60 fps broadcast. Confirm the selected output settings do not reduce the feed below the target.
- Check audio routing. Ensure the file’s audio reaches the OBS program mix as intended. In a test, confirm the video starts at the right point, audio is present and synchronized, and unrelated desktop or notification sounds are not being captured.
- Check playback and encoding load. Verify that your computer can decode the file smoothly while encoding HEVC Main 10 at 4K60. A nominally compatible setting is not enough if the source stutters or the encoder cannot keep up.
Set OBS and YouTube for HDR
- Choose a supported YouTube ingest route. YouTube’s HDR guidance allows RTMP(S) or HLS. Select the corresponding YouTube service in OBS if it is available in your installed version. For HLS, YouTube specifies that the stream key must be configured for HLS; confirm the chosen service and key agree.
- Configure the encoder. Select a compatible hardware HEVC encoder, the Main 10 profile, and P010 (4:2:0) output. Choose Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG to match the source; YouTube recommends HLG. Do not assume that software H.264 or an ordinary SDR output setting will produce YouTube Live HDR.
- Set resolution and frame rate. Configure output for 3840×2160 at 60 fps if that is the intended broadcast. In YouTube’s settings for HDR, leave manual resolution unchecked.
- Set rate control and keyframes. Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, staying at or below YouTube’s four-second maximum. For 2160p60, YouTube lists 10–40 Mbps for AV1/H.265; its table recommends 35 Mbps for H.264. For an HDR workflow, use the compatible HEVC path and select a sustainable bitrate based on the actual upload connection.
- Connect OBS to the scheduled stream. Create or schedule the broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room, then connect OBS through the account connection or the stream key. Treat the key as a secret; anyone with access to it may be able to send video to that broadcast.
Test, go live, and verify HDR playback
- Test before the public event. YouTube says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Test with motion and audio similar to the planned program, and inspect the incoming preview and stream-health indicators before starting publicly. First-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s live-stream setup guidance.
- Do not judge HDR from the Control Room preview. YouTube says the Live Control Room preview does not display HDR colors. Once the stream is available, play it on a supported HDR device and check the quality menu for the HDR badge.
- Account for viewers’ devices. Viewers using devices that do not support HDR receive SDR playback. The availability of 4K or HDR playback can also depend on the device, connection, and YouTube processing.
Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | What to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Hardware HEVC, Main 10, or HDR options are missing | Your OBS build or encoder hardware may not expose YouTube’s documented HDR controls. | Check that OBS is 30.1 or later and verify compatible hardware encoder support for your platform. If the required options are unavailable, do not assume an SDR or software H.264 configuration can carry YouTube Live HDR. |
| Colors look washed out or wrong | The file may be SDR, the chosen transfer function may not match the source, P010 or the color space may be wrong, or HDR may not be enabled on the viewing display. | Check the source metadata and match the OBS transfer setting to PQ or HLG as appropriate. Verify the display’s HDR mode. Do not diagnose color from the Live Control Room preview, which does not show HDR color. |
| YouTube does not show 2160p60 | OBS output resolution or frame rate may be set incorrectly, or ingest may be unhealthy. YouTube may also need time to process viewer renditions. | Check OBS output and stream health, then allow processing. Do not assume every device or connection will offer 4K HDR playback. |
| Dropped frames or unstable ingest | The selected bitrate or output demand may exceed what the upload can sustain consistently. | Reduce bitrate or output demands and retest. Use YouTube’s speed-test guidance to assess the connection, and leave headroom rather than targeting its peak reading. |
| The video stops when it reaches the end | Loop may be off for the Media Source. | Enable Loop if the file should repeat. |
Or let it run in the cloud
