For a 4K 60fps YouTube Live stream, set OBS to 3840×2160 at 60 fps, use CBR, and set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. Start with YouTube’s current recommended video bitrate for your codec: 50 Mbps for H.264 or 35 Mbps for AV1 or H.265/HEVC. Those settings are only a starting point: your gaming PC must encode and render the game without overload, and your connection must sustain the bitrate throughout the stream.

Recommended OBS settings for 2160p60

Setting Starting value Notes
Output resolution 3840×2160 Use progressive video with a square pixel aspect ratio.
Frame rate 60 fps Use only if your PC and sustained upload connection can handle it.
Encoder Hardware encoder, when available Available codecs and controls depend on GPU generation, OBS version, and YouTube ingest support.
Rate control CBR YouTube’s live guidance recommends constant bitrate.
Video bitrate 50 Mbps H.264; 35 Mbps AV1 or H.265/HEVC These are YouTube’s recommended live-encoder values for 2160p60, from its current settings page accessed in 2026. They are video bitrate figures; leave room for audio and network variation.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
B-frames 2, if the encoder exposes the control Consistent with YouTube’s advanced recommendations.
Audio, stereo AAC or MP3; 128 Kbps at 44.1 kHz YouTube’s recommended stereo live-audio configuration.

OBS labels and available options vary with its version, codec, and GPU. Use these values as targets, then confirm the encoder’s available controls and test the complete setup before going live.

Choose a codec and bitrate

H.264: the broad fallback

YouTube supports H.264 for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion and recommends RTMPS. At 2160p60, its current live-encoder settings page recommends 50 Mbps for H.264 and lists a minimum of 14 Mbps. The minimum is a lower bound, not a quality target. Use H.264 when newer codec support is unavailable or when it is the codec your encoder and ingest workflow reliably support.

AV1 or H.265/HEVC: lower recommended live bitrate

YouTube’s current live table recommends 35 Mbps at 2160p60 for AV1 or H.265/HEVC and lists a 10 Mbps minimum. YouTube supports both for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, but confirm that your GPU, OBS version, and YouTube workflow support the codec you select. A lower recommended bitrate does not guarantee that a particular PC can encode it smoothly.

Use live figures, not upload-video figures

YouTube’s upload-encoding settings page, accessed in 2026, recommends 53–68 Mbps for high-frame-rate SDR 4K uploaded videos. That range is for uploaded video encoding, not live ingestion; for a live stream, use the live table and the matching codec value above.

Configure OBS output and video

  1. Set the video target: in OBS, open Settings > Video. Set the output resolution to 3840×2160, frame rate to 60 fps, and pixel aspect ratio to square if the control is shown. Use progressive video.
  2. Select the encoder and rate control: open Settings > Output and select a hardware encoder supported by your GPU when available. Choose the codec supported by your hardware and YouTube ingest path, then set rate control to CBR.
  3. Set bitrate and keyframes: enter the YouTube-recommended live bitrate for your chosen codec and set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. Do not set an interval longer than 4 seconds.
  4. Set quality controls conservatively: keep two B-frames where the encoder exposes that setting. Choose a suitable current quality preset and tune for stable gameplay and encoding rather than assuming a named preset works for every GPU.
  5. Check the audio path: use AAC or MP3 for stereo, with YouTube’s recommended 128 Kbps at 44.1 kHz. Test microphone and game audio for clipping and sync.

OBS’s NVIDIA NVENC guide provides a starting configuration including CBR, 2-second keyframes, a quality-oriented preset, high-quality tuning, two-pass quarter-resolution multipass, and an appropriate codec profile. That guide dates to 2018, so do not treat its options as a universal 2026 prescription. OBS documentation dated 2024-08-21 for options introduced in OBS 31.0 says the newer adaptive-quantization label is equivalent to the earlier Psycho-Visual Tuning concept, describes B-frame-as-reference support for HEVC/AV1, and says Ultra High Quality tuning is not recommended for gaming content and significantly reduces throughput. Do not choose Ultra High Quality by default for a gaming stream.

Check whether your PC and connection can sustain 4K60

There is no universal minimum GPU or CPU specification that guarantees a particular game will run and encode at 4K60 without performance loss. Test your actual game, scene, encoder, and connection together. A one-time speed test is useful as an initial check, but does not establish that your connection will sustain a long stream at the target bitrate.

  • Use the OBS stats dock to watch for rendering or encoding overload and dropped frames.
  • Check YouTube Live Control Room for ingestion health and messages.
  • Rehearse with movement similar to the planned gameplay, plus overlays, microphone, and game audio.
  • If upload is unstable, lower bitrate or output resolution. If rendering or encoding is overloaded, try a faster preset, lower resolution or frame rate, or reduce game rendering load.

YouTube says to test before going live with audio and movement similar to the planned stream, then monitor stream health during the event. Its documentation does not provide a universal pass threshold for every gaming PC. At 2160p, YouTube says the low-latency improvement option is unavailable; streams are optimized for normal latency.

SDR and HDR are different workflows

SDR

For SDR, use Rec. 709, 8-bit, progressive video. These color settings are separate from resolution, frame rate, and bitrate: selecting 4K60 does not by itself configure the correct color path.

HDR

For HDR, YouTube recommends H.265/HEVC over RTMP(S) and 10-bit depth; its cited guidance does not support AV1 for HDR. Use HDR only after confirming that the encoder, OBS, YouTube ingest path, game output, and intended viewers’ displays support the full workflow. Viewers without HDR-capable displays will not see the intended HDR result. For 5.1 live audio, YouTube specifies AAC and recommends 384 Kbps at 48 kHz.

Test before the public stream

  1. Confirm OBS, GPU driver, encoder codec, and YouTube stream key work together. Keep the key private and never show it on screen.
  2. Use a private or unlisted test stream, with actual gameplay movement, overlays, microphone, and game audio.
  3. Check OBS for rendering or encoding overload and YouTube Live Control Room for healthy ingestion.
  4. If network frames are lost, check sustained upload stability and lower bitrate or output resolution. If rendering or encoding is overloaded, use a faster preset, reduce output resolution or frame rate, or reduce the game’s rendering load.
  5. Before a later broadcast, recheck YouTube’s current encoder table because codec support and recommended rates can change.

Common problems and fixes

Symptom Likely area to check What to try
Network-dropped frames or unhealthy ingestion Sustained upload stability, bitrate, or route to YouTube Run a representative test; lower the video bitrate or output resolution if the connection cannot sustain the target.
Encoding overload Encoder preset, codec support, or available GPU encoding capacity Choose a faster preset, lower resolution or frame rate, or reduce game rendering load.
Rendering lag Game load competing with OBS rendering Reduce game rendering load or lower output resolution or frame rate.
Video looks poor despite meeting a minimum Bitrate set near a minimum rather than the recommended value Use the codec-specific recommended live bitrate if the connection can sustain it; otherwise reduce resolution or accept the trade-off.
Codec option missing or stream will not ingest GPU generation, driver, OBS version, or YouTube workflow compatibility Confirm compatibility and use H.264 as the broader fallback if needed.
Audio clips or is out of sync Microphone/game levels or audio timing Check levels, clipping, and sync during the full-scene rehearsal.
