To stream a playlist at 720p without configuring OBS to upscale it, add the files to an OBS VLC Video source, set Settings → Video → Output (Scaled) Resolution to 1280×720, and send the feed to YouTube Live using the event’s server URL and stream key. Use source files that are 1280×720 if you want to avoid enlarging lower-resolution footage, and test the playlist before going live.
What “without upscaling” means on YouTube Live
Setting OBS’s output to 1280×720 means the encoder sends a 720p frame rather than asking OBS to produce a larger output such as 1080p or 4K. It does not guarantee that every viewer receives an identical 720p playback rendition: YouTube says it automatically transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for different devices and network conditions. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance.
If a playlist includes files below 720p, putting them on a 1280×720 canvas cannot add real source detail. For a practical no-upscale setup, use 1280×720 files, set OBS output to 1280×720, and avoid enlarging smaller sources or choosing a larger output. This describes the configured workflow; it does not guarantee that no internal scaling occurs in every decoder or compositor path.
Prepare the playlist in OBS
- Install VLC with the same architecture as OBS. The VLC Video source appears only when VLC is installed, and their architectures must match—for example, 64-bit OBS with 64-bit VLC. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
- Add the playlist source. In your scene’s Sources dock, click + and choose VLC Video Source. Add the video files in the order you want them played. OBS supports common video formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI and WebM.
- Set the playback behavior. Enable Loop Playlist if playback should restart after the final item; it is enabled by default according to OBS documentation. Turn off Shuffle Playlist if sequence matters. Check the source’s behavior when hidden if your broadcast may switch scenes: it can continue, pause or stop depending on its settings.
- Preview the sequence. Confirm the intended order, audio and transitions. If clips have different dimensions or aspect ratios, inspect each one in the scene before relying on the playlist live.
Set the scene and output to 720p
- Open OBS Settings → Video.
- Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 1280×720. This is the stream and recording output size. For a simple setup using 720p media, set Base (Canvas) Resolution to 1280×720 as well; the base is the working canvas.
- Choose a common FPS value that suits the source footage—typically 30 or 60—and check that movement plays smoothly. If you are deciding between 30 and 60 fps, match the source cadence and your available processing and upload capacity.
- For mixed aspect ratios, use a fit or contain treatment when keeping the complete image matters. It may leave bars, but preserves proportions. Avoid stretching a source just to fill the frame. OBS identifies 1280×720 as 16:9; see its Sources Guide.
Connect OBS to the YouTube live event
- In YouTube Studio, create or select the live event in Live Control Room.
- Copy that event’s server URL and stream key into OBS’s streaming settings. Use the values for the event you intend to broadcast.
- Keep the stream key private. YouTube describes it as password-like: it tells the encoder where to send the feed and enables YouTube to accept it. Do not show it in screenshots, overlays or public instructions. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- If using a custom stream key, YouTube’s encoder settings page says you can select manual resolution detection; by default, YouTube automatically detects resolution and frame rate.
Choose encoder settings for 720p
YouTube’s current English-language H.264 ingest table recommends 8 Mbps video bitrate for both 720p30 and 720p60. These are YouTube recommendations for incoming ingest, not a guarantee that every viewer will receive a 720p rendition.

| Setting | Recommended configuration |
|---|---|
| Output resolution | 1280×720 |
| H.264 video bitrate | 8 Mbps for 720p30 or 720p60, per YouTube’s guidance |
| Rate control | CBR |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds |
| Audio codec | AAC or MP3 over RTMP/RTMPS |
| Stereo audio bitrate | 128 Kbps, per YouTube’s detailed audio guidance |
| Transport | RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery |
H.264 is a straightforward baseline if your encoder supports it. YouTube also lists H.265 and AV1 ingest; codec choice depends on the encoder and workflow. For the full current values and caveats, consult YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.
Test bandwidth, playback and stream health
Before the intended broadcast, test representative footage with movement and audio. YouTube recommends upload capacity with 20% headroom above the total bitrate needs of the primary, backup and other streams. Check upload capacity rather than assuming download speed is a useful substitute. Its streaming tips also recommend previewing before starting and monitoring stream health during the event.

Common problems and fixes
The VLC Video source is missing
Install VLC and make sure its architecture matches OBS, such as 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS. Restart OBS after installation and check the Sources menu again.
The stream is larger than 720p
Recheck Settings → Video → Output (Scaled) Resolution. Set it to 1280×720; a larger output setting asks OBS to scale the working canvas up.

A clip looks stretched or has bars
Check that the source’s aspect ratio fits the 16:9 canvas. Fit or contain the clip to preserve its proportions; bars can be the correct result when the source is not 16:9. Stretching fills the canvas by distorting the image.
The playlist does not repeat or plays in the wrong order
In the VLC Video source properties, enable Loop Playlist to repeat after the last item and disable Shuffle Playlist to preserve a fixed order. Also check whether the source pauses or stops when hidden if scenes are being switched.

YouTube does not receive the feed
Verify that OBS has the server URL and stream key for the selected event. Treat the key as a password and do not reuse a value without confirming it belongs to the event you are sending.
Playback stutters or stream health degrades
Check upload capacity and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom over total bitrate needs. Test the full playlist and monitor YouTube’s stream health messages rather than relying on download speed.

Lower-resolution clips look soft
A 720p output cannot restore detail absent from a smaller source. Use 1280×720 originals where possible and avoid enlarging lower-resolution clips if retaining their original detail is the priority.
