You can configure Windows to launch OBS after a restart and ask OBS to start streaming, but this is an attempted recovery—not a guarantee that the same YouTube broadcast will resume automatically. Schedule or prepare the intended event in YouTube Studio, set its encoder auto-start behavior deliberately, and rehearse the whole process on the church’s actual setup. A volunteer should still know how to confirm the event is live and take over if it is not.
What the automatic restart setup can—and cannot—do
The practical do-it-yourself approach has two parts: reduce the chance that Windows restarts during worship, then configure OBS to launch and attempt to stream after Windows starts. YouTube’s documented settings let an encoder start or stop a broadcast when auto-start and auto-stop are enabled, but YouTube does not promise that a computer reboot will resume the exact same broadcast automatically. OBS opening, or showing that it is sending data, is not by itself proof that viewers can watch the intended event.
Plan for recovery, not seamless continuity. A reboot can leave OBS without the intended event selected, start it before the network is ready, or leave YouTube’s viewer-facing broadcast state needing a person’s attention.
Prepare the YouTube broadcast first
- Schedule or prepare the intended event in YouTube Studio. Scheduled streams can appear to subscribers as upcoming, and viewers may choose “Notify me.” Use the church’s actual YouTube account and verify that the event volunteers will expect to see is the one prepared.
- Keep the stream key private. The key tells the encoder where to send the feed. Treat it like a password; do not post it in public notes, messages, or on screen. See YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.
- Choose auto-start and auto-stop intentionally. YouTube documents that when these settings are on, streaming can be started or stopped from the encoder. “Reuse settings” copies the selections to a new stream. Check the settings on the actual event rather than assuming a new or reused broadcast has the behavior you want.
- Understand the separate live states. OBS’s scheduled-stream guidance explains that auto-start determines whether starting encoder streaming also makes the scheduled broadcast live to viewers; if it is not enabled, a separate go-live action may be required. Consult OBS Studio Overview and verify the live status in YouTube Studio during your rehearsal.
Make OBS launch and attempt to stream after Windows starts
Option 1: Put a configured OBS shortcut in the Startup folder
- Find the OBS executable or an OBS shortcut, then create a separate shortcut for the church’s automatic-start setup so the ordinary OBS shortcut remains unchanged.
- Open the shortcut’s Properties and append
--startstreamingafter the executable path in the Target field. Preserve the existing path and any quotation marks around it; the option belongs after the closing quote, separated by a space. Apply the change. - Place that configured shortcut in the Windows Startup folder so it runs when the relevant Windows user signs in. The community recipe describes this approach, but it is not an OBS or YouTube guarantee of unattended recovery.
- Restart Windows during a rehearsal and check what happens from sign-in through YouTube Studio. Confirm that OBS starts, connects to the intended event, and results in the viewer-facing broadcast being live.
Option 2: Use Task Scheduler
A Task Scheduler task can launch the configured OBS shortcut or executable at sign-in or startup. The cited community guidance also suggests Task Scheduler, but it does not provide a universally tested task configuration or guarantee that OBS can stream before a user session and network are ready. Choose the trigger and run conditions to suit the church computer, then test under the same sign-in conditions the service will use. If the setup depends on a signed-in desktop user, do not assume a task configured for a different security context will behave the same way.

Allow for network startup time
OBS may launch before the router, modem, or wired or wireless connection is ready. If its first connection attempt fails, automatic reconnect may not be sufficient. A delayed or connectivity-aware task may help, but the available guidance does not establish a universal delay or a tested script. Test the actual equipment and timing rather than relying on an arbitrary wait.
Reduce the chance of a Windows Update restart during worship
- Set active hours around the full service window. Include setup, worship, and teardown so Windows is less likely to restart automatically while the church is using the computer.
- Schedule planned restarts outside that window. Install updates and restart when a volunteer can verify OBS, the network, audio and video sources, and the YouTube event afterward.
- Do not treat active hours or pausing updates as a permanent fix. Active hours reduce automatic restarts during the hours the device is used; they do not replace installing updates. Pauses are temporary, and updates eventually need to be installed. See Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ.
- Check policy applicability before changing managed-device settings. Group Policy, MDM, and some registry policies offer additional controls in managed Windows environments, but Microsoft marks several restart policies as legacy or inapplicable to Windows 11. Check the documented Windows version and policy applicability before using an older recipe; do not copy registry changes blindly. See Microsoft’s Windows restart guidance.
Rehearse and verify the recovery path
- Use the church’s actual computer, Windows account, OBS configuration, scheduled-broadcast workflow, network, and audio and video sources.
- Perform a planned Windows restart with enough time before a service to recover manually if needed.
- Observe whether the relevant Windows user signs in, OBS launches, and the encoder connects. Do not stop at the point where OBS merely opens.
- In YouTube Studio, confirm that the intended event—not a different stream—is live to viewers. Check the viewer-facing result as well as OBS’s status.
- Have a volunteer practice the manual recovery path, including selecting the right broadcast and using YouTube’s go-live control if encoder streaming alone does not make the event live.
Troubleshooting: when the stream does not resume
| What you see | Likely issue | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| Windows starts, but OBS does not open | The shortcut or task is not running for the expected user or trigger. | Check the Startup-folder shortcut or Task Scheduler trigger and run conditions. Rehearse using the same sign-in arrangement planned for the service. |
| OBS opens, but does not start streaming | The startup option may not be in the shortcut target, or OBS may not be using the expected configuration. | Check that --startstreaming follows the executable path in the configured shortcut, then test that shortcut directly. |
| OBS attempts to stream but cannot connect | The network may not be ready when OBS launches, or the connection may otherwise be unavailable. | Check connectivity and the encoder’s connection state. Test a delayed or connectivity-aware launch on the actual network; no single delay is established as reliable for every setup. |
| OBS is sending data, but viewers cannot see the event live | The intended scheduled broadcast may not have auto-start enabled, may not be selected, or may need a separate go-live action. | Confirm the selected event and its auto-start setting in YouTube Studio. Check YouTube’s live status and have a volunteer use the manual go-live path if required. |
| The stream stopped after a disconnect or restart and will not continue | Continuation behavior can depend on the particular broadcast state and configuration; user reports are not a universal YouTube rule. | Check the current event in YouTube Studio and decide whether to continue it or prepare another broadcast. Do not assume the same URL or event will always recover. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep an uploaded sermon or other prerecorded video looping on YouTube, rather than recover a live camera-and-audio production from OBS, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the recording, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically attempts recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. It is for uploaded video, not going live from a camera, and is YouTube-only. Start the free first day with StreamNeo.
