YouTube Live Settings for 1080p 29.97 fps Prerecorded Video

YouTube has no separate 29.97 fps bitrate row. Here are its 1080p30 recommendations, how to connect an encoder, and what to test before broadcasting prerecorded video.

For a 1080p prerecorded video at 29.97 fps, use YouTube’s published 1080p at 30 fps guidance as the closest documented target: for H.264, set a recommended 14 Mbps bitrate; for AV1 or H.265/HEVC, 10 Mbps. Use constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe interval. YouTube does not publish a separate 29.97 fps row, so check the encoder’s actual output and inspect the Live Control Room preview before going live.

Recommended YouTube Live settings

YouTube’s encoder settings table labels its relevant category “1080p @30fps.” It does not provide a separate row for 29.97 fps or instructions for converting fractional frame rates. The settings below apply that 30 fps guidance as the nearest published category—not as a claim that 29.97 and 30 fps are identical. Confirm the output your encoder sends and inspect the stream preview. YouTube’s encoder settings are recommendations for incoming streams, not a guarantee of picture quality for every file, encoder, or connection.

Setting Recommended value
Resolution and frame rate 1080p, using YouTube’s 30 fps row as the closest documented category for 29.97 fps content
Video codec and bitrate H.264: 14 Mbps recommended; 5 Mbps minimum. AV1 or H.265/HEVC: 10 Mbps recommended; 4 Mbps minimum.
Rate control CBR (constant bitrate)
Keyframe interval 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds
Video properties Square pixels, progressive scan, 2 B-frames, 1 reference frame, CABAC
SDR color Rec. 709, 8-bit
Audio AAC or MP3; stereo at 44.1 kHz, with 128 kbps recommended. For 5.1 surround, YouTube specifies AAC, with 48 kHz and 384 kbps recommended.
Ingest protocol RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS for encryption in transit

The listed minimum and recommended bitrates come from YouTube’s published 1080p30 encoder table; they are not measurements of this video or a promise that the minimum will look good. Choose the codec your encoder and workflow support, and keep the actual output within YouTube’s recommendations.

Make sure your upload connection has headroom

Your available upload bandwidth must exceed the stream’s total bitrate. YouTube recommends leaving 20% of available upload bandwidth unused as headroom. For example, a video stream set to 14 Mbps needs more than 14 Mbps of stable upload capacity, plus room for audio and other network use; do not plan to run the connection at its limit. See YouTube’s encoder guidance and streaming tips.

Schedule the stream and connect your encoder

  1. Create or schedule the broadcast. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a stream or schedule one. Scheduling can create an upcoming watch page viewers can share and use to set reminders. Follow the current prompts in YouTube’s live-stream setup guide.
  2. Copy the stream URL and key. Enter them in the encoder’s streaming settings. Treat the key as a password: YouTube describes it as the credential that lets the encoder send a feed. If it is compromised, reset it in Live Control Room. Do not share it or publish it in a recording, screenshot, or public setup guide. YouTube’s setup instructions explain where to find stream details.
  3. Set up playback in your encoder. Configure the encoder to play the prepared file and send a 1080p output using the appropriate bitrate, codec, CBR, and keyframe settings above. YouTube’s reviewed help pages do not give one universal method for loading or looping prerecorded files; the exact media-source and repeat controls depend on your chosen encoder. Use that encoder’s documentation, and verify the frame rate it actually sends rather than assuming it preserves 29.97 fps.
  4. Send the feed early and check the preview. Start the encoder with enough time to let YouTube receive the signal. In Live Control Room, check the picture, framing, motion, audio, and synchronization in the preview before selecting Go live where required for the scheduled broadcast.
  5. Monitor the broadcast. Watch the preview and stream-health messages during transmission. Confirm that the connection remains stable and the video and audio continue as intended.

Test the actual file before broadcast

Test in advance with movement and audio similar to what viewers will see. A static test image or silent clip will not reveal every issue in a documentary with motion, narration, music, or changing scenes. YouTube’s streaming tips also recommend setting up in advance, checking the preview, verifying watch-page and mobile playback, monitoring audio and video, and testing backup-encoder failover where relevant.

  • Confirm the encoder’s output resolution, frame-rate behavior, codec, bitrate, rate control, and keyframe interval.
  • Listen for clipping, missing channels, unintended silence, and audio that drifts out of sync with the picture.
  • Check representative motion for judder or dropped frames; test the same file and playback path you plan to use on air.
  • Verify the upcoming watch page and playback on a phone or other viewer device.
  • If you use a backup encoder, test the handoff rather than assuming it will work.

YouTube’s settings and streaming tips offer checks, not a single diagnosis for every case of judder, dropped frames, or audio-sync trouble. Compare what the encoder reports with the incoming preview and stream-health messages.

Troubleshoot common problems

Symptom What to check Next step
The stream will not connect Confirm the stream URL and key are copied correctly and that the encoder is sending to the intended YouTube broadcast. Re-enter the current details from Live Control Room. If the key may have been exposed, reset it there and update the encoder.
The preview has the wrong resolution or frame rate Check the encoder’s actual output, not only the source-file properties. YouTube detects resolution and frame rate automatically by default. Adjust the encoder output and recheck the preview. If you need to choose resolution manually, YouTube says to create a custom stream key and enable manual settings in Stream Resolution. The help page does not specify a separate 29.97 fps input mode.
Video looks soft, breaks up, or drops frames Compare the encoder’s codec and bitrate with the applicable YouTube row; check CBR and whether upload bandwidth is sufficient with headroom. Run another test with representative movement, reduce competing network use, and inspect stream-health messages. Do not exceed your stable upload capacity.
Motion looks uneven Verify the encoder’s output frame rate and playback behavior for the 29.97 fps source. Use the encoder’s own documentation to choose how it handles fractional-rate media, then test the resulting feed. YouTube does not publish a universal 29.97 conversion or pulldown procedure.
Audio is missing, distorted, or out of sync Check that the encoder is sending a supported audio codec and the applicable sample rate and channel layout; listen to the Live Control Room preview. Test the same file and playback route again, checking audio and video together. Change one relevant encoder setting at a time so you can identify whether it resolves the fault.

Copyright and prerecorded material

A prerecorded file sent through an encoder is still content streamed on YouTube. Before broadcasting, make sure you have the rights needed for the film, music, narration, archival footage, and any other included material. A successful technical preview does not establish that the content is authorized or complies with YouTube’s policies. Review YouTube’s live-streaming tips and the rules that apply to your channel and content; do not assume that crediting a rights holder or labeling a work “documentary” grants permission.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a continuously running YouTube channel rather than a one-time broadcast, StreamNeo is a cloud option for looping uploaded videos or playlists. Upload the recording, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running without a computer or home connection staying on; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Each slot streams your uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded-video playback, not camera broadcasting. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
