In YouTube Studio, create clearly named playlists, choose who can see them, add relevant videos, and arrange their order. A continuous livestream needs a separate live-stream setup that sends a feed through an encoder or cloud service. Before streaming music, make sure you have the rights needed for the tracks and territories involved.
What playlists do for a 24/7 music channel
A playlist is a named, ordered collection of YouTube videos. It gives listeners a way to explore your catalog by a useful route: for example, a genre, mood, activity, recurring program, or selection of past broadcasts. These categories are practical choices, not playlist types required by YouTube.
Keep each playlist’s purpose distinct. If two lists contain nearly the same videos and promise the same listening experience, combine them or clarify their titles and descriptions. A small set of understandable options is more useful than a large set of overlapping lists.
A playlist organizes videos; it does not, by itself, send a continuous live feed. YouTube’s playlist workflow and its encoder-based live-stream setup are separate processes. Think of playlists as the channel’s catalog and browsing structure, and the encoder or cloud service as the system that supplies the livestream. YouTube’s playlist instructions and live-stream encoder instructions cover those workflows separately.

Plan a playlist structure listeners can understand
Choose a purpose for each playlist
Start with the question a listener would ask when choosing what to hear. A channel might have a playlist for a main live program, separate collections for distinct genres or moods, and a place for selected past broadcasts or highlights. Use only categories that fit the videos you actually have.
Write descriptive titles and descriptions
Make the title specific enough to distinguish the playlist from the others on your channel. Use its description to explain what is included or how the selection is arranged. YouTube Studio’s playlist guidance allows titles up to 150 characters and descriptions up to 5,000 characters; concise wording is usually easier to scan. Check the current Studio interface if its limits or labels have changed.
Choose visibility according to the audience
Use public playlists when you want viewers to find and browse the collection. YouTube says a private playlist is visible only to its owner, making private lists suitable for internal planning rather than public discovery. Review visibility before featuring or sharing a playlist. See YouTube’s playlist visibility and management guidance.
Create and fill a playlist in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Content, then Playlists.
- Choose Create playlist. Enter a descriptive title and, if useful, a description.
- Set the playlist’s visibility and ordering options, then add videos. Studio supports adding items from search, by URL, or from your channel library.
- Choose Create to save the playlist. Check that its title, visibility, and contents reflect the purpose you intended.
Labels and screen layouts can change, so consult the current YouTube Studio playlist workflow if an option appears in a different place.

You can also add a video while working on its details: open the video in Studio, use the playlist option to add it to the appropriate list, and save the change. This is useful when you publish a new track or archive and want to place it in the right listening route without rebuilding the playlist.

Put the clearest entry first
Reorder items by dragging them into the sequence you want. Put an especially representative video near the top so the playlist’s purpose is apparent, then revisit the order as your catalog changes. YouTube also documents playlist editing and ordering in its playlist editing guidance.
Feature playlists and handle archives
Make useful public playlists easy to reach from relevant channel surfaces. After a livestream, YouTube recommends organizing the live archive and highlights into playlists. That lets viewers find a past broadcast or a shorter selection without confusing those videos with the channel’s current live feed. See YouTube’s live-stream promotion guidance.
Use a series playlist only for a true sequence
A series playlist marks videos as an official set intended to be watched together; it is not just a label for a genre or mood collection. YouTube requires a verified account for this feature, limits the playlist to videos you own and have the rights to use, and does not allow one video to appear in more than one series playlist. Check YouTube’s series playlist requirements before enabling it.

To broadcast continuously, set up a live stream in YouTube Live Control Room and send YouTube a feed from an encoder. YouTube describes encoders as software applications or standalone hardware, so dedicated hardware is optional. The playlist can help organize ordinary uploads, archives, or highlights, but it is not a substitute for that live feed.
- Check that the channel is eligible to stream. YouTube says the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days; its general live-stream help also says creators must be at least 16. These are eligibility checks, not a guarantee that a particular stream will be approved. See YouTube’s live-stream eligibility guidance.
- If this is the channel’s first livestream, allow for YouTube’s stated activation period of up to 24 hours.
- In Live Control Room, set up the stream and connect your encoder with the stream URL and stream key. Treat the key as a credential: use it only in the service sending your feed, and do not publish it.
- Start the feed from the encoder and confirm in Live Control Room that YouTube is receiving it. Check the current Live Control Room instructions for the stream’s ingest details before relying on a particular setup.
- Plan how the feed will continue for the intended schedule and what you will do if the encoder, computer, connection, or stream drops. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; check current platform guidance for longer broadcasts and archive behavior.
These are YouTube’s current published instructions as represented in its help pages, and platform requirements may change. Verify the details in Live Control Room before a long-running broadcast.

Clear music rights before you broadcast
A track being available to listen to, or included in a consumer music subscription, does not establish that you can retransmit it in a livestream. YouTube’s livestream terms place the responsibility on the content provider to have necessary rights for use on Google services worldwide, including music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public-performance licenses), and other royalty participants.
Confirm that permissions cover the actual recordings and compositions, livestream use, and territories where the stream will be available. YouTube’s terms are a contractual representation by the content provider, not a blanket clearance for any particular catalog. If the scope of a license is unclear, ask the rights holder or a qualified legal adviser before streaming. Read YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions.
Choose how to keep the feed running
For a do-it-yourself setup, use an encoder—software on a computer or standalone hardware—and maintain the power, internet connection, and monitoring that your broadcast schedule requires. Consider what happens if a device or connection fails and how you will restart the feed. YouTube lists software and standalone hardware as encoder options; it does not require a particular product.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The service loops the uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It is for YouTube, plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, looping and playlists, support from the StreamNeo team, and any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, without re-encoding or quality tiers. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month.

Fix common playlist and livestream problems
A playlist is visible to you but not viewers
Check its visibility setting. A private playlist is owner-only; set a playlist to public if it is meant for viewer discovery, then confirm the change in Studio.
A new video is missing from the intended collection
Open the video’s details in Studio and add it to the correct playlist, or edit the playlist and add the video from your channel library. Check that you saved the change and that you were editing the intended playlist.
The playlist order does not communicate its purpose
Reorder the items by dragging them, then review the first few entries as a listener would. Move archives or highlights to a clearly named collection if they disrupt the playlist’s intended listening route.
You cannot start a livestream
Check channel verification, any live-stream restriction in the prior 90 days, and whether first-time activation is still pending. Review the current Live Control Room status and YouTube’s eligibility guidance.

YouTube is not receiving the encoder feed
Confirm that the encoder is using the stream URL and stream key for the intended stream, and check the encoder’s connection and Live Control Room status. If you suspect the key has been exposed, replace or reset it in the current YouTube controls and update the encoder using the new key.
The stream stops unexpectedly
Check whether the encoder device lost power, its internet connection failed, or the stream was disconnected. For a long schedule, decide in advance how you will monitor and restart the feed or use a cloud workflow with automatic recovery. Check YouTube’s current instructions rather than assuming archive behavior for a broadcast at or beyond 12 hours.
Frequently asked questions
Can I put someone else’s video in a playlist?
YouTube Studio supports adding videos to playlists, but including a video in a playlist does not give you rights to rebroadcast its music. Secure the permissions needed for any live use.
Can a public playlist be used as my live program?
A public playlist is a browsable collection of videos. Continuous broadcasting requires a separate live feed sent to YouTube through an encoder or cloud service.
