How to Reduce CPU Usage When Looping Videos to YouTube Live from a VPS

The most effective first step for reducing CPU while looping video to YouTube Live from a VPS is to avoid re-encoding when your source and output are compatible. Learn how to use FFmpeg stream copy, pace and loop input, and troubleshoot the stream.

The biggest CPU saving usually comes from avoiding video re-encoding. If your video’s codecs are compatible with YouTube Live and the output, use FFmpeg stream copy (-c copy) instead of an encoder such as libx264. Keep -stream_loop -1 to repeat the file and use -re to pace file input for a live stream; pacing does not itself reduce encoding load. If conversion, resizing, or filters are necessary, encoding remains part of the job, so tune it and measure the VPS rather than expecting a fixed CPU reduction.

Find out whether FFmpeg is re-encoding your video

First inspect the running FFmpeg process and the input file. Check CPU use over time, then identify the video and audio codecs, dimensions, frame rate, and container. This distinguishes an encoding bottleneck from other VPS work and tells you whether stream copy is a viable option.

FFmpeg describes transcoding as decoding and then encoding. Encoding tends to be computationally expensive, so the project recommends stream copy when transcoding is unnecessary. With compatible input streams and output requirements, -c copy passes the encoded streams through without re-encoding. It cannot resize, filter, overlay, or convert an incompatible stream. FFmpeg documentation explains stream copy, transcoding, looping, and input pacing.

  • If the command specifies libx264 or another encoder, it is encoding that stream.
  • Filters such as scaling or overlaying require decoding and processing; stream copy cannot apply them.
  • If video can be copied but audio needs conversion, you may be able to copy video and encode only audio, after checking that the resulting streams work with your output.

Use stream copy when the source is compatible

A conceptual command shape for a looping file is:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4 -c copy -f flv rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_ADDRESS/YOUR_STREAM_KEY

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

This is an illustrative shape, not a tested, universal command. The input codecs and container must be compatible with the chosen output format and YouTube ingest. Replace the destination with the RTMPS address and stream key shown for your YouTube broadcast; do not expose the key in screenshots, shared logs, or shell history. Confirm the actual URL format and options for your setup before running it.

FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 means infinite looping; 0 means no loop. Put input options such as -stream_loop -1 and -re before the corresponding -i. The -re option reads a file at its native frame rate (equivalent to -readrate 1); it is useful for real-time pacing when packet timing matters, but does not lower CPU usage if the command still re-encodes.

If re-encoding is necessary, reduce the work carefully

You may need to re-encode if the source is incompatible with the output or if you need to change its size, frame rate, or appearance. CPU demand depends on the codec, encoder settings, content, and VPS allocation. No universal percentage of CPU savings can be promised.

  • Consider reducing output resolution or frame rate only if the resulting picture still meets your viewing needs.
  • Avoid unnecessary filters and transformations; each requirement that prevents stream copy adds processing.
  • Choose a codec, bitrate, and keyframe interval that meet YouTube’s ingest guidance for the selected resolution and frame rate.
  • Measure CPU after each change while the complete stream runs. Do not assume that a setting improves CPU use without checking your own VPS.

Match YouTube Live ingest settings

YouTube’s English encoder guidance lists RTMP and RTMPS ingest and H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 codecs, up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. Its bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate; these are platform ingest settings, not CPU benchmarks or guaranteed picture-quality outcomes. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

H.264 output listed by YouTube Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps

These figures are YouTube’s published guidance, accessed in 2026. They describe the bitrate settings for those specific H.264 resolutions and frame rates; they do not predict VPS CPU use. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP.

Test the stream and check network capacity

Before relying on a continuous broadcast, test the complete path from the VPS to YouTube. Watch the stream and check YouTube’s stream-health status and messages. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring, and recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. That is network capacity guidance, not a CPU target. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Troubleshoot high CPU or a stream that will not run

Symptom Likely issue What to check
CPU remains high with -c copy The command may still encode another stream, or CPU load may come from another process. Inspect the full FFmpeg command and process list. Check whether audio is being encoded or filters are active; compare VPS CPU use before and during the stream.
Stream copy fails or YouTube rejects the stream The source codec or container may not suit the selected output or ingest. Check the input streams and YouTube’s supported ingest guidance. If conversion is required, encode only what needs changing.
Video plays once and stops The input loop option may be missing, set incorrectly, or positioned after the input it should affect. Use -stream_loop -1 before the corresponding -i and verify behavior with your installed FFmpeg build.
Playback is not paced like a live stream A file may be read as fast as possible rather than in real time. Use -re before the corresponding file input when real-time pacing is needed. It does not reduce re-encoding CPU use.
YouTube reports stream-health or buffering problems The issue may be network capacity or ingest configuration rather than CPU. Check YouTube’s messages, confirm encoder settings, and ensure outbound bandwidth has the recommended headroom.

Other ways to handle encoding and continuous playback

If stream copy is not possible, hardware encoding may move encoding work to a supported device. YouTube lists NVIDIA NVENC as hardware-based encoding, but a VPS does not necessarily provide a usable GPU or a compatible FFmpeg build. Confirm access and support with the VPS provider before planning around it.

YouTube also lists Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 prerecorded streams and Upstream.so as a cloud studio for 24/7 live video streaming. Their listing does not establish a particular price, performance benefit, or that every workflow supports the exact looping setup you need. Confirm current capabilities and terms directly.
