How to Stream Prerecorded Videos to YouTube Live From an Indian Data Center Without OBS

Run a software encoder on an Indian cloud VM and send a prerecorded feed to YouTube over RTMPS—without leaving OBS or a home computer running.

You can stream a prerecorded video to YouTube Live without OBS by running a software encoder on a cloud virtual machine (VM) in an Indian region and sending its output to YouTube over RTMPS. You still need to configure and monitor the encoder, protect your stream key, and verify the VM’s network path to YouTube; hosting in India does not change YouTube’s ingest setup. If you want to avoid operating a VM, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative for looping uploaded videos to YouTube.

What you need for a cloud-VM stream

  • A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled, plus a broadcast created or scheduled in YouTube Live Control Room.
  • A cloud VM in an Indian region you select. Confirm that the provider offers that region and allows sustained outbound connections to the YouTube ingest endpoint; the availability and network performance of any particular provider have not been established here.
  • Your prerecorded video file placed on the VM or otherwise made accessible to its encoder.
  • Software that can encode the file into a format and settings supported by YouTube and publish it to the ingest URL.
  • A protected configuration for the current YouTube server URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder setup explains this connection flow: YouTube encoder setup.

OBS is only one possible encoder. A software encoder running on the VM can send the compatible feed instead, leaving your local computer out of the streaming path. This is not a turnkey setup: VM sizing, file-transfer method, encoder commands, scheduling, and restart behavior depend on your provider and software. Verify those choices against the actual environment rather than relying on an untested command or generic VM specification.

Set up and run the stream

  1. Enable live streaming and create a broadcast. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or schedule the broadcast you intend to use. Allow for any channel eligibility or activation steps YouTube presents before the first live stream.
  2. Choose and prepare the Indian VM. Select a region and verify outbound connectivity to the chosen YouTube ingestion endpoint. Put the video file on the VM and confirm there is enough disk space for it and any working files.
  3. Copy the current ingest details. In the broadcast’s stream settings, copy the server URL and stream key into the encoder’s protected configuration. Do not place the key in public scripts, logs, shared screenshots, or a repository. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your stream. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube’s stream settings.
  4. Configure RTMPS by default. YouTube recommends RTMPS for most ordinary content. It sends RTMP through SSL/TLS; the connection needs a valid YouTube ingest endpoint and application path, port 443, and the server hostname for SNI authentication. Use the exact URL supplied by YouTube and an encoder that supports the required TLS connection. YouTube’s RTMPS guide documents these requirements. Ordinary RTMP uses port 1935, but RTMPS is the recommended starting point for a standard stream.
  5. Set encoding to YouTube’s current guidance. Use the official settings for your chosen codec and resolution, since supported formats and recommendations can change. The published guidance includes constant bitrate, a recommended two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds), stereo audio at 44.1 kHz, and 128-kbps stereo audio. For SDR, YouTube lists Rec. 709. See YouTube’s live encoder settings before choosing encoder-specific values. Test representative motion and audio, not just a static opening frame.
  6. Start the encoder and inspect the preview. Wait for YouTube Live Control Room to show the incoming feed and review stream health before starting the public broadcast. Confirm that video moves, audio is present and intelligible, and the stream is stable.
  7. Start and monitor the broadcast. Start the broadcast in Live Control Room when ready. Monitor the health report as well as the encoder process, VM CPU and memory, disk availability, and outbound network stability. End the broadcast deliberately when the feed is finished.

Choose RTMPS or HLS for the job

For a conventional prerecorded feed, RTMPS is the simpler default. Consider HLS only when its codec or HDR capabilities suit a specific workflow and its latency is acceptable. The protocols have different requirements; they are not interchangeable URL schemes.

Consideration RTMPS HLS
Typical fit Ordinary streams; YouTube calls it a good choice for most ordinary user content, especially when low latency is needed. Workflows requiring supported HEVC or HDR capabilities, where added latency is acceptable.
Connection or media requirements RTMP tunneled through SSL/TLS; use the valid ingest endpoint and application path, port 443, and server hostname for SNI. Muxed audio and video in M2TS; H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio, closed GOP, and segment/playlist uploads over HTTPS.
Latency Suitable when lower latency is important, subject to the selected stream settings. Segment based and usually higher latency than RTMP and WebRTC; not suitable for ultra-low-latency use.
Setup implication Use an encoder and TLS configuration compatible with YouTube’s RTMPS endpoint. Use an encoder that can produce the required segments and playlist format and upload them over HTTPS.

See YouTube’s ingestion protocol comparison and HLS ingestion requirements before committing to HLS.

What an Indian data center changes—and what it does not

The VM’s region determines where your encoder runs; it does not change the YouTube server URL, stream key, or encoder compatibility requirements. The route from that VM to YouTube, the provider’s outbound rules, and sustained throughput still need testing. Do not assume that an Indian VM automatically gives a reliable or faster YouTube ingest path.

The National Informatics Centre’s webcast checklist specifies a static public IP, outbound RTMP port 1935, and dedicated bandwidth of 2–4 Mbps per stream for its own webcast context. These are NIC service requirements, not universal YouTube Live requirements or a bitrate recommendation for this setup. Check the NIC webcast service requirements only if you are working within that service’s context.

Test, monitor, and troubleshoot

YouTube recommends preflight testing and monitoring stream health. The Live Streaming API health information identifies problems such as low video bitrate, frame-rate mismatch, and missing audio. Its live stream documentation describes status and health information. Combine that report with checks on the VM and encoder; VM resource and disk checks are prudent operations practice, not special YouTube requirements.

Symptom Likely area to check What to do
YouTube does not receive a feed, or the encoder times out. Wrong ingest URL or application path, blocked outbound port, unreachable endpoint, or TLS/SNI configuration error. Copy the current server URL from the broadcast settings, verify outbound access to port 443 for RTMPS, and confirm the encoder uses the endpoint hostname for SNI. Check YouTube’s RTMPS guide for documented certificate and timeout symptoms.
Preview reports low bitrate or looks unstable. Encoder bitrate settings or an inconsistent outbound connection. Check the selected resolution and codec against YouTube’s current encoder settings, use constant bitrate as recommended, and test sustained throughput from the VM to the ingest endpoint.
Motion looks uneven or health flags a frame-rate mismatch. Mismatch between the source, encoder output, and broadcast settings. Check the source frame rate and ensure the encoder output is consistent with the settings used for the stream; run a representative motion test before going live.
There is no audio, or audio is incorrect. Source track selection, encoder audio configuration, or a muted/absent input track. Confirm the intended audio track is included and audible in a preflight test. Check YouTube’s current audio guidance, including its published stereo and sample-rate recommendations.
The stream stops unexpectedly or the encoder process exits. Process failure, VM resource pressure, storage exhaustion, or a network interruption. Inspect the encoder’s exit state and logs, VM CPU and memory, available disk, and outbound connection stability. Decide how the process should be restarted and verify recovery behavior in a test before relying on it.

Copyright and YouTube policy checks

A video being prerecorded does not exempt it from copyright or YouTube policy. Before scheduling a loop or long-running feed, make sure you have the rights needed for every video, music track, image, and other included material, including any permissions required for live use. Check YouTube’s current rules for copyright claims, live streaming, and monetization rather than assuming that a stream key or successful preview means the content is cleared. Repeated or minimally changed uploads can also raise reused-content concerns for monetization; an always-on format is not, by itself, evidence of original or monetizable content. Use YouTube’s channel monetization policies and copyright guidance for the current terms.
