The practical choice is a hosted service that confirms it can use your particular cloud folder, or a custom pipeline that you build and operate.
What “syncing a folder to a live stream” actually involves
A folder is a source library, not a live feed. To stream continuously, something must discover the videos, choose their order, play or loop them, encode the output, and transmit it to YouTube. YouTube’s Live Streaming API manages broadcast and stream resources; its documentation does not describe watching a cloud folder for file changes or turning those changes into a playlist. YouTube Live Streaming API documentation
YouTube models the viewer-facing event as a broadcast and the incoming audio/video connection as a stream associated with that broadcast. Managing those YouTube resources is distinct from managing the files that supply the programme. YouTube Live Streaming API documentation

Hosted prerecorded-video service
For the lowest-operations route, use a hosted service that runs the playback and encoder outside your home or office. YouTube Help identifies Gyre as a cloud-based tool for streaming prerecorded videos 24/7. That description does not establish that Gyre can watch arbitrary cloud folders, detect additions or replacements, or preserve a particular playlist order. Before choosing any provider for folder synchronization, confirm those details directly. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder

Custom cloud pipeline
A custom system gives you control over storage access, file selection, sequencing, encoding, and monitoring. You must supply the missing automation: discover files, update the playlist, produce continuous audio/video, send it to YouTube, detect failures, and restart or alert when something breaks.
Google Cloud’s Live Stream API is an infrastructure building block: its documentation describes accepting live input, transcoding to HLS or DASH, and saving output streams to Cloud Storage, with automatic infrastructure provisioning and backup input. It does not establish a ready-made service that watches a video folder and publishes its contents to YouTube. Cloud Storage and the Live Stream API alone are not a folder-to-YouTube recipe. Google Cloud Live Stream API documentation
Local encoder
You can also keep the files accessible to an encoder running on a computer or hardware device. YouTube supports encoder-based streaming, including software and hardware encoders. This route needs an internet-connected encoder and a sufficiently stable upload connection for as long as it operates; the source files may still be stored in the cloud. YouTube says enabling live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours, so complete that setup ahead of the planned start. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder

Questions to resolve before relying on a folder sync
Do not assume a provider syncs a folder just because it streams prerecorded video. Get specific answers about the storage source and how changes are handled.
- Storage access: Can the service read the exact provider, folder, and account you use?
- New and changed files: Are added files detected automatically? What happens when an existing video is replaced, renamed, or removed?
- Order and looping: Can you set a fixed playlist order, and does the service loop it continuously? How quickly do playlist edits take effect?
- Formats and encoding: Which input containers, video and audio codecs, resolutions, and frame rates are accepted? Is the file streamed as uploaded or re-encoded?
- YouTube connection: How is the stream key configured, and does the service reconnect if YouTube or the network interrupts the incoming stream?
- Operations and limits: What monitoring, alerts, restart behavior, storage limits, plan limits, and current terms apply?
The cited YouTube Help description of Gyre does not answer these folder-specific questions. Treat it as a candidate hosted service to verify, not as confirmed arbitrary-folder synchronization. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
How the custom workflow fits together
- Choose the source library. Store the videos in the cloud location your automation can access. Decide what counts as a publishable file and how to handle incomplete uploads, duplicates, replacements, and removals.
- Build file discovery and playlist logic. A scheduled job, event-driven process, or other automation must find eligible files, establish their playback order, and update the playlist. YouTube’s API does not perform this folder-watching role.
- Run continuous playback and encoding. An encoder or playback process must read each item, move to the next, handle the end of the list, and produce uninterrupted audio and video in a format accepted by the chosen YouTube ingest method.
- Create and connect YouTube resources. Use YouTube’s Live Streaming API or the applicable YouTube Live workflow to manage the broadcast and its associated incoming stream. Keep the stream key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to that stream. The API documentation covers broadcasts and streams, not the preceding file automation. YouTube Live Streaming API documentation
- Monitor and recover. Track whether the source player is advancing, whether the encoder is producing output, and whether YouTube is receiving it. Define what happens after a process, host, or connection failure: restart playback, reconnect ingest, notify an operator, or move to a backup.
- Test changes before depending on them. Verify that a newly added or replaced file enters the intended place in the playlist, that looping works, and that a dropped connection recovers as expected.
When HLS ingestion is the implementation choice
YouTube’s HLS ingestion guide is a protocol-specific option for compatible encoder implementations, not a general way to upload a folder. It requires a media playlist, muxed audio and video, HTTPS, and disciplined playlist and segment delivery. Follow the current protocol requirements if building an HLS sender; do not treat ordinary file storage as HLS input. YouTube HLS ingestion guide

Hosted service or custom pipeline?
| Decision area | Hosted prerecorded-stream service | Custom cloud pipeline |
|---|---|---|
| Folder compatibility | Verify that it supports the precise storage provider and folder; the cited Gyre description does not establish this. | Configure or build access to the storage location. |
| File changes and order | Confirm detection of new or replaced files and how playlist order and looping work. | Implement discovery, ordering, looping, and change handling. |
| Encoding and YouTube ingest | Confirm accepted formats, stream-key handling, and reconnect behavior with the provider. | Select an encoder and ingest protocol, then meet the applicable YouTube requirements. |
| Operations | Ask what monitoring and restart behavior the service provides; do not assume guarantees. | You own monitoring, failure alerts, and restart logic. |
| Cost and terms | Check the current plan, limits, and terms with the provider; the cited source does not state them. | Estimate compute, storage, network egress, and engineering effort; the cited sources do not price a pipeline. |
Keep the programme eligible for YouTube
Having permission to store or stream a file is not the only consideration. Check that you have the necessary rights to every video and audio element, and review YouTube’s current live-streaming and copyright requirements before scheduling a continuous broadcast. A playlist that repeats does not make copyrighted material yours or guarantee that a stream will remain available.
For a documentary channel, also make editorial choices that give viewers a clear reason to watch: identify the programme accurately, avoid implying that an old recording is happening live, and make sure the channel’s presentation and any accompanying material reflect your own work and rights. YouTube’s encoder guidance explains how to send a stream, not whether a particular programme satisfies copyright or channel-monetization policies. Troubleshoot common failures
The folder changes, but the stream does not
Likely cause: The service or automation does not watch that folder, or it only imports files manually. Fix: Check the provider’s documented storage integration and refresh behavior. For a custom setup, confirm discovery is running, permissions still allow access, and the playlist is rebuilt when files change.

The stream starts but stops at the end of a video
Likely cause: Playback is configured for a single item rather than a continuous playlist or loop. Fix: Test end-of-file handling, the transition to the next item, and the behavior when the playlist is empty or a file is unavailable.
YouTube is not receiving the encoder output
Likely cause: The broadcast and incoming stream are not correctly associated, the stream key is wrong, or the encoder output does not meet the selected ingest requirements. Fix: Verify the broadcast/stream relationship and key in the YouTube workflow, then check the encoder’s output format and ingest protocol. Keep keys private.
The stream fails after a network or process interruption
Likely cause: The player or encoder exits without restart logic, or the ingest connection is not retried. Fix: Add health checks, restart or reconnect behavior, and alerts; test recovery by deliberately interrupting the process before relying on it.

An HLS sender is rejected or plays inconsistently
Likely cause: Playlist or segment delivery, HTTPS, or muxed audio/video does not meet the HLS ingest requirements. Fix: Validate those items against YouTube’s HLS ingestion guide and inspect the sender’s playlist and segment update behavior. YouTube HLS ingestion guide
