FFmpeg YouTube Live Stream Has No Audio: Fixes for Looping Videos

When an FFmpeg YouTube Live loop has video but no sound, trace the signal from the source file to FFmpeg’s mapping, encoded output, YouTube preview, and loop boundary.

If your FFmpeg YouTube Live stream has video but no sound, first confirm the source file contains the audio you want. Then check that FFmpeg maps that audio into its output and encodes it in a format YouTube accepts. If sound disappears only at each repeat, investigate the loop boundary separately; that is different from a stream that never included audio.

1. Confirm the source video actually has audio

Before changing the FFmpeg command, inspect the input file’s streams. FFmpeg prints stream information when it opens a file; a probe utility such as ffprobe can also show whether it contains video, audio, or multiple audio tracks. If there is no audio stream, the file cannot supply its original music, narration, or other sound. If there are several audio streams, identify which one carries the intended program audio.

FFmpeg normally selects streams automatically, but explicit -map options constrain what reaches the output. The FFmpeg command-line documentation explains stream selection and notes that output option -an disables audio selection or mapping: FFmpeg command-line documentation.

  • No audio stream in the input: choose a source file that includes the sound, or intentionally send silence if that is what the production requires.
  • Audio exists, but the output is silent: check the mapping, -an, selected audio index, and output codec.
  • Audio is present except at the repeat: test the loop seam, rather than treating it as a general audio-mapping failure.

2. Map the intended audio into the live output

For a file known to contain audio on its first audio stream, this is a diagnostic pattern for looping it to a YouTube RTMP ingest URL:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4
  -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0
  -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv "rtmp://a.rtmp.youtube.com/live2/STREAM_KEY"

Replace input.mp4 and the example ingest URL/key with the values shown for your YouTube live setup. Treat the stream key as a password: do not post it in logs, screenshots, or public command histories. This example illustrates input looping, explicit video-and-audio mapping, and AAC audio settings; it is not a tested command or a guarantee for every file, FFmpeg build, event, or ingest endpoint. Test privately or unlisted and verify the live preview before relying on it.

Keep -stream_loop -1 before the -i input it applies to. FFmpeg documents -re as reading at the input’s native rate, useful when output packet flow needs pacing for live streaming. Do not apply a low read rate to a true live capture input, where FFmpeg warns it may cause packet loss. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation.

The stream indexes in -map 0:v:0 and -map 0:a:0 mean the first video and first audio stream from input 0. If the desired sound is on a different audio stream, adjust the audio map after confirming the stream list. Remove any output -an; it suppresses audio output.

3. Check YouTube-compatible audio settings and FFmpeg’s output

YouTube’s live encoder guidance for RTMP/RTMPS lists AAC or MP3 audio. For stereo audio, it recommends a 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 Kbps bitrate; these are platform recommendations, not a promise that every source or FFmpeg build will work without adjustment. AAC is required for 5.1 surround. Check the current YouTube live encoder settings because platform guidance can change.

After starting FFmpeg, inspect the log’s Stream mapping and output stream summary. The output should show the intended audio stream mapped and encoded; if the log reports video only, the problem is still in the input selection or command. If audio is mapped but the output is silent, verify the selected source track and test whether re-encoding to AAC changes the result.

Audio approach When it may help Trade-off
Copy the source audio stream The source codec is compatible with the ingest path and sound remains continuous at repeats. Lower processing cost, but compatibility and loop-boundary behavior depend on the source encoding and container.
Re-encode audio to AAC You need an audio codec listed for YouTube RTMP/RTMPS, or want to test whether stream-copy behavior is causing a problem. Uses encoding capacity and can introduce generational quality loss; it is not a universal fix.

4. If the file has no audio, decide whether silence is intended

There is no original sound to recover from a video-only file. If silence is intentional, or a particular ingest workflow requires an audio stream, FFmpeg can generate a silent audio track with the anullsrc filter and map it to the output. A third-party looping tutorial demonstrates a stereo 44.1 kHz silent source encoded as AAC: Streamloop.app’s FFmpeg looping example.

Generated silence only sends silence; it does not restore missing narration, music, or source audio. YouTube’s published encoder guidance lists audio formats but does not establish that every video-only feed is rejected, so do not add a silent track on the assumption that YouTube universally requires one.

5. Find where the sound disappears

Test the same recording at each stage. YouTube recommends testing with sound and motion representative of the real stream and monitoring stream health. Its guidance also points creators to encoder output, the local archive, dashboard errors, CPU load, and outbound connectivity.

  1. Play the source locally. Confirm that the desired audio is audible and starts where expected.
  2. Inspect FFmpeg’s output. Confirm the audio mapping and codec in the log. If recording a local archive, play it back and listen for silence or interruptions.
  3. Check YouTube’s live preview and stream health. Compare what the preview receives with the local source and archive.
  4. Read dashboard and encoder errors. If the local source or archive is already silent, fix the file or FFmpeg routing. If the encoder output appears healthy but the live stream reports errors or interruptions, investigate the network path as well.

YouTube advises using sufficient outbound bandwidth, leaving headroom, and relying on a stable connection. Network recovery can help with delivery interruptions, but it cannot add an audio stream that was absent or incorrectly mapped. See YouTube’s encoder guidance and YouTube streaming troubleshooting.

6. Diagnose audio gaps at the loop boundary

If sound plays during each pass but clicks, gaps, or shifts at the repeat, listen across several loop boundaries and check the source’s duration and audio/video alignment. The cause can depend on media structure, encoding, and FFmpeg version; a loop seam is not evidence by itself that YouTube dropped the audio.

If the discontinuity follows the seam, compare stream-copying the audio with re-encoding it to AAC, then test the exact file and FFmpeg build again. A looping tutorial demonstrates re-encoding as an approach, but does not establish a universal fix: Streamloop.app’s looping tutorial.

For actual output connection failures, FFmpeg’s FIFO pseudo-muxer supports configurable retry and recovery behavior. That is a resilience option for output failures, not an audio repair; depending on configuration, recovery can also involve queueing or packet dropping. See the FFmpeg FIFO muxer documentation.

7. Troubleshoot by symptom

Symptom Likely area to inspect Next action
The source itself is silent Input file or selected source Choose a file containing the intended sound; a generated silent track cannot restore it.
The source has sound, but FFmpeg output is silent Stream selection or audio mapping Check for -an, verify the audio index, and map the intended input audio stream.
FFmpeg maps audio, but YouTube receives no sound Output codec or ingest configuration Inspect the output summary and test a listed RTMP/RTMPS audio codec such as AAC; check the current YouTube encoder guidance.
Sound drops or clicks only at each repeat Source structure, encoding, or loop seam Listen across multiple repeats and compare audio stream copy with AAC re-encoding.
Audio or video delivery is interrupted with connection errors Outbound network or output recovery Check YouTube dashboard messages and connection headroom; treat FFmpeg recovery settings as network resilience, not a cure for missing audio.
