How do I use Gyre with an unlisted YouTube stream for testing? Create or schedule a YouTube Live broadcast, set its visibility to Unlisted, connect Gyre using the workflow available to your account, and start the stream. If you use manual encoder setup, you must also click Go live in YouTube Studio after its preview appears. An unlisted stream is hidden from public discovery, not restricted to invited testers: anyone with the link can watch.
Choose the right kind of test
YouTube offers two distinct things that can be useful for testing: an audience-facing broadcast set to Unlisted, and a private monitor stream used for preview or testing. They are not interchangeable. The unlisted broadcast has a shareable watch link; the monitor stream is a separate output available to the creator through YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation.

If you need another person to watch the test, use an unlisted broadcast and share its link only with the intended testers. If your goal is to preview the feed without creating an audience-facing broadcast, the monitor stream is the distinct concept to understand; do not label an unlisted broadcast as private.
Create an unlisted YouTube Live broadcast

Set the broadcast’s visibility to Unlisted. YouTube supports public, private, and unlisted visibility for live streams; its live settings guide explains the available controls: Manage live stream settings.

Keep the watch link limited to the testers you intend to include. Unlisted means people generally need the link to find the broadcast; it does not prevent a recipient from sharing that link with someone else.
Connect Gyre and start the test
Gyre describes both YouTube channel authorization and a manual setup route for some configurations. Channel authorization can create a YouTube broadcast and bind a stream key; the manual route uses the YouTube stream URL and key. Follow the option Gyre presents for your account rather than assuming every channel or configuration has the same controls. Choose or create the broadcast through the available Gyre workflow, and confirm that the YouTube broadcast is set to Unlisted in Live Control Room.

Start the Gyre stream and check the YouTube Live Control Room preview and status before sharing the test link.
If you use manual URL and stream-key setup

In the YouTube Live Control Room for the unlisted broadcast, copy the server URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not post or send it to testers.

Enter the URL and key in Gyre’s applicable stream settings, then start the Gyre feed.

Wait for the incoming preview to appear in Live Control Room. Then click Go live in YouTube. Starting the encoder or Gyre feed alone does not necessarily publish the audience-facing broadcast.

When testing is finished, end the stream in YouTube and stop the Gyre feed. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after ending; check the archive’s visibility separately rather than assuming it will retain the live broadcast’s settings.
Share the test safely

Share only the unlisted watch link with intended testers. Anyone who receives the link can watch, and viewers may pass it on.

Do not share the stream key. It connects an encoder or service to the stream; it is not the viewer link.

Before testing with sensitive or copyrighted material, check that you have permission to stream it. Unlisted visibility does not remove YouTube’s copyright or other platform rules.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
The Gyre feed is running, but viewers cannot see the broadcast
In the manual encoder flow, confirm the Live Control Room has received the preview and that you clicked Go live. A connected feed is not the same as a published broadcast.
The broadcast is public or unavailable to testers
Recheck the broadcast visibility in YouTube Studio and confirm you sent the watch link, not the stream key or a Studio preview page. Unlisted broadcasts are link-accessible; they are not invite-only private streams.
YouTube does not show an incoming preview
For manual setup, verify that the URL and stream key were copied from the correct broadcast and entered in Gyre’s stream settings. If you are using channel authorization, check that the intended channel is authorized and that the broadcast selected in Gyre is the one you set to Unlisted.

The broadcast ends but an archive remains
YouTube automatically archives streams shorter than 12 hours, according to its encoder setup guidance. Review the archived video’s visibility in YouTube Studio before treating the test as no longer accessible.
