For a mostly still rain scene, start by testing OBS at 1280Ă—720, 30 fps, then set bitrate for your actual streaming platform and the upload connection at the broadcast location. If you stream to YouTube, its recommended H.264 ingest bitrate is 3 Mbps for 720p30; use CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval. These are starting points, not guarantees: Indian broadband performance varies by location, time, network load and ISP, and no India-wide upload-speed threshold is established for this use.
Start with a restrained output, then test it
Rain ambience is usually a low-motion format, so 30 fps is a sensible first trial rather than an assumed ideal. In OBS, the output resolution determines what is sent to the platform; set the canvas to suit the source and layout, then scale the output to 1280Ă—720. Lower resolution and frame rate reduce data and processing demands compared with more demanding settings. OBS notes that 60 fps can require more system resources than 30 fps and recommends testing before a real broadcast. OBS streaming guide.
- Set the canvas and output: In OBS, open Settings → Video. Set the base (canvas) resolution to match your scene layout, and set the output (scaled) resolution to 1280×720 for the initial test. Choose 30 FPS.
- Choose the destination and encoder: In Settings → Stream, select the service and connect its stream key using that service’s current instructions. Encoder availability and labels vary by OBS version and hardware.
- Set platform-specific output values: Use the destination’s ingest requirements. For YouTube, see the recommended values below; do not assume they apply to another platform.
- Run a real-world test: Test the complete scene, including the audio loop, on the same computer and network arrangement you plan to use. If the platform supports it, make the test unlisted or otherwise private. Watch OBS’s dropped-frame and performance indicators and the platform’s stream-health messages.
YouTube settings: bitrate, keyframes and headroom
YouTube’s live encoder guidance gives recommended H.264 ingest bitrates of 3 Mbps for 720p30 and 5 Mbps for 1080p30. It specifies constant bitrate (CBR), recommends a 2-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed 4 seconds. These values are for YouTube ingest, not universal settings for every streaming service. YouTube’s guidance is on its live encoder settings page.
| YouTube output example | Recommended H.264 ingest bitrate | Keyframe interval | Rate control |
|---|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 2 seconds recommended; no more than 4 seconds | CBR |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 2 seconds recommended; no more than 4 seconds | CBR |
In OBS, these settings are generally found under Settings → Output with the output mode set to Advanced, in the streaming section. Choose CBR, enter the target bitrate in kilobits per second (for example, 3,000 kbps for 3 Mbps), and set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. Exact labels may differ by OBS release and encoder. Verify the selected encoder can apply the settings, then confirm the platform reports a healthy incoming stream.

Choose bitrate from stable upload, not the plan’s headline speed
A broadband plan’s advertised download speed does not tell you how much stable upload capacity is available to the broadcaster. OBS says bitrate depends on upload speed and the streaming service’s limits. Its connection troubleshooting guide, published September 30, 2024, describes 75% of total upload speed as a good starting point for bitrate troubleshooting. YouTube separately recommends leaving 20% bandwidth headroom beyond the total stream bitrate, noting that other network use can reduce the bandwidth available to the broadcast. These are separate vendor rules of thumb, not a single formula or a promise that a particular Indian connection will sustain a stream. See OBS connection troubleshooting and YouTube streaming tips.
- Run speed tests at the actual streaming location and on the intended wired or Wi-Fi setup. A speed-test result is only a snapshot; repeat at representative times, including periods of household use.
- Reserve bandwidth for the stream and account for other people or devices using the connection. Uploading files, video calls, cloud backups and other streams can compete for capacity.
- Start at 720p30 and the destination’s recommended bitrate only if the connection sustains it in a long test. If it does not, reduce bitrate or output demands and test again.
- Do not treat a national broadband number as a sufficient answer: the available sources establish no reliable India-wide upload-speed figure for this use.
Make the connection and 24/7 setup more resilient
Use Ethernet where practical. OBS warns that Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming, though a cable cannot fix every ISP, route, congestion, router or hardware problem. Avoid running the broadcast through a VPN unless you have verified that it is reliable for the route to the ingest service. OBS’s troubleshooting guidance also advises considering security or bundled network software, drivers, the modem/router, and ISP-side problems when connection faults persist.

A 24/7 stream is an operating goal, not something an OBS preset guarantees. OBS lists automatic reconnect among its advanced settings, which can help after a brief interruption, but it does not guarantee uninterrupted service. Before relying on the setup, test a long run with the rain visual and audio looping, reconnect behavior, and the actual platform. Keep an eye on OBS’s connection indicators and the platform’s stream health rather than relying on a short speed test.
Diagnose dropped frames separately from viewer buffering
OBS reports dropped frames
Dropped frames in OBS usually indicate that the connection cannot sustain the selected bitrate or that the route to the ingest server is unstable. Lower the bitrate first and test again. OBS’s 75% starting point is troubleshooting guidance, not a guaranteed safe rate. If the platform offers another ingest server, try it; switch to wired networking if possible, and investigate VPNs, security software, drivers, router/modem faults or ISP congestion if the problem continues. Some network congestion or provider-side changes are outside the broadcaster’s control.

OBS shows no dropped frames, but viewers buffer
That is a different issue from broadcaster-side dropped frames. Viewer devices and connections may struggle with the stream even when OBS is sending it reliably. OBS advises considering a lower bitrate when reaching viewers with slower connections matters, particularly on services that do not transcode. YouTube says it automatically transcodes live streams into multiple output formats, but that capability should not be assumed for every platform. See OBS connection troubleshooting and YouTube’s live stream transcoding information.
The stream looks unstable or stops after running for hours
Check the platform’s stream-health messages and OBS logs or status indicators to distinguish network drops from encoder overload or a problem with the media source. Confirm that the rain audio and visual loop continue, that the computer remains powered and awake, and that reconnect settings are enabled and tested. A stable bitrate and a reconnect option can reduce avoidable failures, but neither eliminates outages or makes a local computer unattended-proof.
