First find out whether the black screen is in the stream itself or only in one viewer’s player. Check Gyre’s preview or a local recording, then ask viewers on different networks to compare. If the preview and several independent viewers all show black, investigate the video source, stream setup and YouTube health messages. If only one viewer is affected, troubleshoot that viewer’s device, browser or connection.
Determine whether the problem is stream-side or viewer-side
Ask the channel owner to check the picture in Gyre’s preview, if available, and in a local archive of the stream. Then check whether other viewers on unrelated internet connections see the same black screen. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says an error reported by one viewer probably points to that viewer’s computer or internet connection; reports from many viewers on different connections may indicate an encoder problem. YouTube: Fix video streaming issues.
- Only one viewer sees black: begin with that viewer’s browser, device and network.
- The owner’s preview or local archive is black: check the source file and the Gyre/encoder path.
- The preview looks right but several independent viewers see black: inspect YouTube’s stream health and delivery path.
Check the video uploaded to Gyre
Gyre’s guidance says stream files should be pre-recorded videos uploaded to Gyre storage and properly converted for the target platform. Confirm that the intended file is selected and that it plays correctly before the stream starts. If possible, play the original file locally and compare it with Gyre’s preview; a black picture at both points suggests the source or its conversion deserves attention. Gyre’s video preparation guidance.
Inspect the stream and encoder path
If the source plays but the stream preview is black, check the encoder or streaming setup rather than changing YouTube playback settings at random. YouTube recommends using the latest encoder version, reviewing encoder errors and CPU load, checking the stream’s picture and sound in the encoder, and inspecting a local archive for audio or video faults. If the encoder output looks healthy while viewers still have trouble, test the outbound internet connection. YouTube’s stream troubleshooting steps.

- Update the encoder or streaming software to its latest available version.
- Watch the encoder preview while the stream is running. Note whether video is absent there or only on YouTube.
- Review encoder error messages and CPU load for signs that processing is failing.
- Inspect a local recording or archive, if one is available, for black video, missing audio or other faults.
- If the preview and archive look correct, test the computer’s outbound internet connection and continue to YouTube’s stream-health information.
Compare Gyre’s published preparation settings with the actual file
Gyre’s knowledge-base article lists these preparation values. Treat them as Gyre’s published guidance, not a guarantee that changing a single value will fix every black screen; check current platform requirements and the actual health message before converting or reconfiguring a file.
| Setting | Gyre’s published value |
|---|---|
| Resolution | 1920Ă—1080 or 1280Ă—720 |
| Video codec | H.264 |
| Video bitrate | 3072–6144 kbps |
| Audio bitrate | 128 kbps |
| Frame rate | 30 FPS |
The same article’s final listed line says “Frame rates 44.1 kHz.” That wording appears to be a documentation error: kHz is a sample-rate unit, not a frame-rate unit. Do not treat it as a frame-rate setting; verify audio sample-rate requirements in current platform guidance. Gyre names Adobe Premiere, DaVinci Resolve and Final Cut as possible video-conversion tools, not required purchases. Gyre’s video preparation guidance.

Read YouTube’s stream-health messages
Use the actual health issue reported for the broadcast rather than guessing at a technical cause from the black screen alone. YouTube’s Live API health-status documentation includes configuration issue types involving video, audio, bitrate, frame rate, codecs, keyframes, and consistency between primary and backup streams. A black picture by itself does not establish which, if any, of those settings is wrong. YouTube Live API: broadcast status.
Verify the Gyre and YouTube broadcast pairing
Gyre’s first-stream guide describes a workflow in which you create a YouTube broadcast using the looped-stream scheduled-broadcast workflow, choose visibility and auto-start settings as needed, then enter the stream key and broadcast ID in Gyre. Check that the selected broadcast is the intended one and that the key and ID belong together. If YouTube reports a stream startup error, its guidance is to obtain a new stream key in Live Control Room and update the encoder with it. If the black screen is limited to one viewer
Have the affected viewer try another browser or device and check whether other video plays normally. YouTube’s advice about disabling Chrome hardware acceleration and updating graphics drivers is specifically for a green screen with audio, not a confirmed Gyre-originated black stream; these are playback diagnostics to consider when the issue is viewer-local, not guaranteed fixes for a stream-side fault. YouTube: Fix green screen in the video player.
