For a concat-demuxer list, quote or escape spaces inside the list itself; if FFmpeg rejects a trusted list as unsafe, add -safe 0. For a single input file, quote the path in your shell command. These are separate parsing layers.
First identify what “playlist” means
A YouTube playlist URL and a local FFmpeg concat list are not the same thing. This guide covers local files—often downloaded first with a tool such as yt-dlp—that you want FFmpeg to read or join. Passing a YouTube URL directly is a different workflow; the documentation cited here does not establish support for every YouTube URL or playlist form in FFmpeg itself.
For a local concat list, the filename is parsed inside a text file using FFmpeg’s concat syntax. For a direct input such as -i "video one.mp4", the shell parses the quotes before FFmpeg receives the argument. Fix the layer where the filename is being parsed.
Quote filenames inside a concat list
Create a text file such as files.txt and put each local filename on a file line. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer requires spaces and special characters in these paths to be escaped with backslashes or enclosed in single quotes. For example:

file 'video two.mp4'If the list uses paths relative to its location, keep the video files where those paths point. You can also use full paths, but the concat demuxer’s safety check may reject them unless you adjust the setting below.
Run the concat command
For a trusted list that the default safety check rejects, use:

ffmpeg -f concat -safe 0 -i files.txt -c copy output.mp4-f concat selects the concat demuxer, -i files.txt supplies the list, and -c copy asks FFmpeg to copy the streams without re-encoding. The -safe 0 option relaxes the demuxer’s default path validation, which excludes spaces from its restricted portable character set. Use it only with a list you trust and control; it is not a general fix for every filename error. This is a command pattern, not a tested result for a particular system or pair of media files. Quote a single input in the shell instead
If you are opening one file directly rather than reading a concat list, quote the whole path as one shell argument. For example, in a Bash-like shell:

ffmpeg -i "video one.mp4" output.mp4Quoting rules differ among Bash, PowerShell, Windows Command Prompt, and other shells. Adapt the example to the shell you actually use. FFmpeg notes that an additional escaping layer may be needed when its syntax is embedded in a shell command or script; concat-list quotes and shell quotes are not interchangeable. See FFmpeg’s quoting and escaping documentation.
Diagnose the error at the right layer
- The printed path stops at the first space, or FFmpeg cannot open the truncated name: the shell argument or concat-list entry is likely being split incorrectly. Quote the whole direct path in the shell, or quote/escape the path after
filein the list. - The error mentions an unsafe filename or path in a concat input: the demuxer’s safe-path check may be rejecting the entry. For a list you trust, try
-safe 0. - You are supplying a YouTube playlist URL: this is not a local concat-list filename problem. If you download the videos first, use the resulting local paths in FFmpeg.
- Only one local file is involved: use shell quoting for
-i; concat-list syntax does not apply.
Check media compatibility before using stream copy
Correct quoting makes files addressable, but it does not guarantee that FFmpeg can concatenate them with -c copy. The concat demuxer virtually joins packet streams and expects the files to have the same streams, codecs, and time base. It adjusts timestamps between files, and inaccurate duration information can cause artifacts. Consult the concat demuxer documentation and check the files’ stream properties before relying on stream-copy concatenation. If the files differ, a workflow that decodes and re-encodes them through a concat filter may be more appropriate.

Optional: avoid spaces in downloader-created names
If you prefer filenames without spaces or other special characters, yt-dlp offers --restrict-filenames. That is a naming preference or workaround, not a requirement for FFmpeg to read ordinary filenames with spaces. See the yt-dlp filesystem options.
