How to Run Two YouTube Live Streams at Once on a Raspberry Pi

YouTube can use one incoming live feed for two live broadcasts. Separate shows need separate stream resources—and workload-specific testing on your Raspberry Pi.

You can show the same incoming feed on two simultaneous YouTube live videos by binding one YouTube live stream to two live broadcasts. If you need two different feeds—or different stream settings—you need separate stream resources and an encoder setup capable of producing both. YouTube documents the broadcast workflow, but the available official guidance does not establish that any Raspberry Pi can reliably encode two independent feeds; test your exact board, resolution, frame rate, audio chain and sustained upload before depending on it.

First decide what “two streams” means

YouTube distinguishes the incoming live stream sent by an encoder from the live broadcast (the viewer-facing video). That distinction determines whether a Raspberry Pi needs to encode once or twice.

What you want YouTube setup What the Pi must do
Two live video pages showing the same picture and sound Bind one incoming live stream to two live broadcasts, then start both broadcasts. Send one feed; YouTube’s documented API pattern uses that content for both videos.
Two shows with different content or streaming settings Create a separate live stream resource for each broadcast and configure the encoder for the appropriate stream. Produce and send the required separate feeds. Capacity depends on the actual workload and is not established for a particular Pi model by the official guidance cited here.

YouTube’s Live Streaming API gives the example of a continuous 24/7 feed and a separate interview broadcast that uses content from that feed. It explains: “Thus, you are streaming the same content to two separate videos at the same time.” YouTube Live Streaming API documentation

Run one feed on two YouTube live videos

This is the appropriate method when both live videos should carry the same feed. It does not create two video tracks in a single encoder input. YouTube’s API identifies multiple video streams within one ingestion stream as an error.

  1. Create two broadcasts. In YouTube’s live workflow or through the Live Streaming API, create the two viewer-facing live broadcast records and set their titles, visibility and schedules as needed.
  2. Create or select one incoming live stream. In YouTube’s Live Control Room or API workflow, use the single live stream resource that will receive the feed. Treat its stream key as a password: do not publish it or place it in a public command, screenshot or document.
  3. Bind both broadcasts to that same live stream. The API workflow associates each broadcast with the shared incoming stream. The encoder sends the feed to that stream once; it does not need a second independent video encode just to duplicate the content.
  4. Start the feed and take each broadcast live. Confirm the incoming stream is receiving data, then set each broadcast live using the available YouTube workflow/API controls. Check both viewer-facing pages.
  5. End broadcasts independently when appropriate. YouTube’s example allows the second event to be marked complete while the continuous broadcast keeps running.

The exact controls available depend on whether you use YouTube Studio or the API. The API example documents the simultaneous-broadcast pattern; it is not a claim that every account has an identical interface or entitlement.

Use separate streams for independent shows or settings

If the two broadcasts need different footage, audio, overlays, resolutions or other stream settings, create a distinct YouTube live stream resource for each broadcast. Configure the encoder to send the intended source and settings to each one.

This is a more demanding job for the Pi than duplicating one feed. A setup may require two encoding outputs or processes, and its feasibility depends on the Pi model, source, codec, resolution, frame rate, audio chain, software and sustained upload bandwidth. YouTube’s API guidance explains when separate streams make sense, but does not provide a Raspberry Pi command or performance benchmark for two independent broadcasts. Do not assume that one Pi model or generic OBS configuration will handle the workload; test the exact arrangement for long enough to expose overheating, dropped frames and network instability.

Choose the encoding path for your Pi model

Raspberry Pi’s camera-streaming guide gives different GStreamer examples by generation. Its sample for Pi 4B or earlier uses v4l2h264enc; for Pi 5, the guide says to replace that element with x264enc speed-preset=1 threads=1. The Pi 5 example uses software x264 encoding. Pi 5 support for H.265 hardware decoding does not mean it has H.264 hardware encoding; decoding and encoding are different operations.

Use the guide’s model-specific pipeline as a starting point only if its camera and GStreamer workflow matches your source. The guide also describes third-party servers such as MediaMTX, MistServer and go2rtc for ingesting Raspberry Pi camera streams and re-streaming them to clients. Those options can help with local distribution or workflow design, but they do not eliminate YouTube’s distinction between a shared feed and separate feeds, or prove that two Pi encodes will be sustainable. Set YouTube-compatible encoder parameters

YouTube’s current Help guidance, accessed 2026-10-03, recommends RTMPS—the encrypted form of RTMP—for ingest. These are platform settings, not evidence that a particular Pi can sustain them twice.

  • Video codec: YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1, with frame rates up to 60 fps. Use a codec your encoder workflow can actually produce.
  • Rate control: use constant bitrate (CBR).
  • Keyframes: target one every two seconds and do not exceed four seconds between keyframes.
  • Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3. For stereo, its guidance lists 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps; for 5.1 audio, the encoder settings page also lists 48 kHz and 384 Kbps.
  • Resolution and frame rate: the API’s standard inbound resolution values run from 240p through 2160p, with a variable-detection option; its frame-rate choices include 30 fps, 60 fps or variable frame rate.

Choose a modest resolution and frame rate that match the source, encode path and measured upstream capacity. For two independent feeds, measure sustained upload with both running and leave headroom for network variation; no universal safe Pi bitrate for that workload is established here. YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance and LiveStreams API documentation describe platform settings and stream-resource options.

Symptom or diagnostic What to check Practical fix
Stream is ready but not receiving data Whether the encoder is running and using the intended stream resource and private key. Start the encoder, verify its destination and selected stream, and replace a key in the encoder if you regenerated it in YouTube.
Unsupported codec The encoded video or audio codec sent to YouTube. Switch to a codec supported by YouTube and your encoder path.
Keyframe interval too long Keyframe spacing in the encoder. Set a two-second interval where possible and keep it within YouTube’s four-second maximum recommendation.
Insufficient incoming video Whether video is present, arriving steadily and encoded at the intended resolution and frame rate. Check the source and pipeline, then reduce workload settings if the Pi cannot sustain the chosen output.
Multiple video streams in one ingestion stream Whether the encoder or relay is putting multiple video streams into a single YouTube ingestion. Send one video stream per ingestion resource; for separate broadcasts, use distinct stream resources.
Primary and backup settings do not match Whether the primary and backup feeds use matching audio/video settings. Align the settings or correct the mismatched feed.
One independent feed drops frames or disconnects Pi load, temperature, encoder output, camera pipeline and sustained network upload with both feeds active. Test each output under the full real workload; lower resolution or frame rate, or move one encode to another system if needed.

YouTube’s LiveStreams API health information includes diagnostics for unsupported codecs, keyframe intervals, insufficient incoming video, multiple video streams and mismatched primary/backup settings. YouTube LiveStreams API documentation

Check copyright and channel eligibility before scheduling

Having a technically valid ingest does not guarantee YouTube will keep a broadcast available. Use material you own or are licensed to stream, including music and third-party footage, and check YouTube’s current live-streaming and copyright rules in Studio before publishing. A second live page does not grant extra rights to duplicate copyrighted content. Repeated or reused material can also raise separate channel monetization-policy issues; review the current policy rather than assuming that a continuous stream qualifies for monetization. Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a continuous YouTube channel built from uploaded videos rather than a live Raspberry Pi camera or two distinct real-time productions, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded video in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps streams as made, at one price per slot; automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. It streams to YouTube only and is not a camera encoder or a method for producing two different live feeds. Start the free first day on StreamNeo.
