You can run a 24/7 YouTube stream of nature footage and background music with a software encoder on a computer, a hardware encoder, or a cloud streaming service. The crucial first step is clearing the music for continuous YouTube live use: a track described as “free” or purchased elsewhere can still trigger a Content ID match, and a license alone may not prevent an interruption unless the rights owner allowlists your channel.
1. Clear the footage and music before you build the stream
Make sure you have the rights needed for every video, image, recording and music track in the program. YouTube’s live-stream terms put responsibility on the provider to hold the necessary rights worldwide, including music licensing rights. Read YouTube’s terms.
For music, YouTube identifies public-domain material and music used with the copyright owner’s permission as copyright-safe options. Its recommended routes include the YouTube Audio Library, original compositions, Creator Music in certain regions, or third-party music with a license that covers your intended use. Check the actual license: it may limit where or how a track can be used. A “free” label, credit in the description, or off-platform purchase does not by itself establish that continuous YouTube live streaming is permitted.
Ask about Content ID allowlisting
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can cause YouTube to replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it temporarily or terminate it if the content remains or a relevant strike occurs. If you have permission or a license, ask the rights owner whether your channel must be added to their Content ID allowlist. 2. Assemble a loop that works as a continuous program
Combine your nature footage and cleared sound bed into a coherent loop. Check the start and end for abrupt cuts, gaps, volume changes or visible jumps, and verify that the audio remains suitable when repeated. Keep the finished media and any license or permission records available in case a rights question arises.
For a documentary or ambience channel, decide whether the stream is intended to be purely atmospheric or to include narration, titles or other program elements. The video and audio should remain intelligible throughout the loop; test the complete program rather than assuming a short excerpt represents the full stream.

3. Choose how to send the program to YouTube

4. Set up a computer encoder and start with a test
- Open YouTube Live Control Room. Create or schedule the live stream and locate its stream URL and stream key. Keep the key private: anyone with access to it may be able to send video to your stream.
- Configure your encoder. Add the YouTube stream URL and key in the encoder’s streaming settings. YouTube documents OBS output for HLS ingestion; the encoder and ingestion protocol you choose must be compatible. For ordinary ambience streaming, do not select HLS by default unless your encoder or video requirements call for it.
- Load the complete program. Confirm the intended video and audio are selected, the loop behaves as expected, and the encoder is sending the right source.
- Preview before going live. Use the Live Control Room preview to check that the picture, sound and stream accessibility are correct. YouTube advises preparing ahead and testing audiovisual integrity before starting the public broadcast.
- Start the stream and check it from the viewer side. Confirm the live page plays as expected, including audio, before leaving the setup unattended.
YouTube’s HLS ingestion guidance explains that HLS sends video in segments and has higher latency than RTMP. It specifies required segment formats and duration. For a prerecorded nature stream where real-time interaction is not central, that extra latency may not matter, but HLS is an ingestion choice rather than a general requirement.

5. Make upload capacity and continuity part of the setup
The total outgoing bitrate must fit within the available upload capacity. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate, checking network reliability and testing encoder failover if you have configured a backup. The 20% figure is YouTube’s recommended bandwidth margin, not a guarantee of uninterrupted service. See YouTube’s stream settings and network guidance.
- Check the actual upload connection used by the encoder, not only a plan’s advertised maximum.
- Test the stream for long enough to catch unstable connectivity, audio dropouts or a loop that fails after its first pass.
- If using a backup encoder or connection, test failover instead of assuming it will take over correctly.
- For a computer-based setup, prevent the computer from sleeping and make sure the encoder and source files remain available for the intended duration.
6. Monitor the live stream and deal with interruptions
Check audio and video while the stream is running. If YouTube interrupts a stream for third-party content, inspect YouTube Studio for the notice and address the rights issue. If the matched material is licensed, contact the rights owner about allowlisting your channel in Content ID; do not assume that restarting the encoder resolves the underlying claim.
