For several files, add a VLC Video source, put the lectures in its playlist, and keep Loop Playlist enabled. That makes the media repeat; it does not ensure OBS, your computer, internet connection, or streaming service stays online continuously.
Choose the right OBS source

OBS describes VLC Video this way: “Unlike Media Source, you can create a playlist of items, similar to an Image Slideshow.” Do not look for the documented multi-item playlist control in an ordinary Media Source: the two repeat settings belong to different sources. OBS Media Sources documentation
Set up a single lecture file
- In OBS, select the scene that will carry the lecture.
- In the Sources dock, select + and add Media Source.
- Choose the local lecture file in the source properties and enable Loop.
- Confirm the source is visible in the active scene, then play it and check the audio before broadcasting.
OBS lists supported video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. The supported formats do not establish that every file will behave identically on every system, so test the specific lecture file you intend to use. OBS Media Sources documentation
Set up a playlist of lectures
- Install VLC if it is not already installed.
- In the lecture scene’s Sources dock, select + and add VLC Video.
- Add the lecture files to the VLC Video playlist in the source properties.
- Leave Loop Playlist enabled to restart the source after it reaches the end. Leave Shuffle Playlist off for the listed order, or enable it if you want randomized playback.
- Check the scene visibility behavior: VLC Video is set by default to stop when hidden and restart when visible. Keep it visible in the scene used for the stream, or deliberately choose another visibility behavior if your scene arrangement requires it.
- Play through the list far enough to confirm the files and audio work, and verify that playback restarts at the end.
VLC must be installed separately. If OBS is 64-bit, install 64-bit VLC. OBS lists VLC Video support for Windows, macOS, and Linux, with VLC required on each. OBS Media Sources documentation

Prepare OBS and the stream for a long run
- Run OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard for stream setup. It accounts for intended use, computer resources, and network conditions; it does not replace testing the actual broadcast.
- Check the Audio Mixer meters while the lecture plays, and confirm the intended audio source and output settings.
- Make a short test stream or recording before the full broadcast. Confirm both the picture and sound at the destination.
- Check the streaming platform’s current rules and technical limits for your stream key, bitrate, resolution, and content. The appropriate values depend on the platform, system, network, and target quality; the sources here do not establish one universal setting.

Understand what “24/7” requires
A loop controls what happens when a file or playlist reaches its end. It does not restart OBS after a crash, keep a computer powered, repair an internet outage, or guarantee that YouTube or another streaming service will accept the connection. A continuous broadcast therefore depends on the playback source and the delivery path remaining available.

For an OBS-based setup, the computer must stay running with OBS and the scene active, and the connection must remain stable enough to send the configured stream. Confirm the scene does not hide the VLC source if its visibility setting stops playback while hidden. Plan for monitoring and recovery rather than treating a successful loop test as proof of 24-hour uptime.
Troubleshoot playback and delivery separately
The lecture does not repeat
- One file ends and stays ended: Confirm you added a Media Source and enabled Loop; that setting is off by default.
- A list ends and stays ended: Confirm the source is VLC Video and Loop Playlist is enabled. The playlist control is not the same as Media Source’s Loop setting.
- The playlist is missing or will not play: Confirm VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- Playback stops after changing scenes: Check whether the VLC Video source became hidden. Its default visibility behavior is to stop when hidden and restart when visible.
- Files play in an unexpected order: Check Shuffle Playlist; it is off by default.
OBS drops frames or disconnects
OBS defines dropped frames as a connection that is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate; excessive drops may disconnect the stream. Try a different server or service, lower the bitrate to fit stable upload capacity and platform limits, and check network configuration and software. When Wi-Fi instability is a concern, OBS recommends a wired connection. A faulty network cable is also a possible hardware cause, so check or replace one if it is suspect; a cable is not needed just to enable media looping. OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting
Viewers report buffering, but OBS shows no dropped frames
Viewer networks, devices, and locations can affect playback even when OBS reports no dropped frames. Lowering bitrate and staying within the platform’s recommendations may help viewers on slower connections, with possible trade-offs in resolution, quality, or frame rate.
