But “24/7” describes the intended schedule, not guaranteed uptime: network or power interruptions can stop the feed, and YouTube says a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive.
Before you start: check channel eligibility and plan for interruptions
Your YouTube channel must be verified and free of live-streaming restrictions from the preceding 90 days. If you are enabling live streaming for the first time, activation may take up to 24 hours, so do this before your planned launch. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
- Install OBS Studio on the Windows PC that will encode and send the stream.
- Use a stable internet connection; wired Ethernet can avoid some Wi-Fi variability, but does not guarantee uninterrupted service.
- Check the PC’s available upload bandwidth and encoding capacity at the resolution and frame rate you want.
- Decide whether you need a local recording. A continuous live stream should not be treated as a dependable complete replay.
Choose OBS settings for YouTube Live
For a standard SDR stream, YouTube’s current baseline guidance is H.264, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval, using RTMPS where available. YouTube also lists H.265 and AV1, but available hardware encoding support varies by PC. These are YouTube ingestion recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular computer can encode reliably. Check the current YouTube encoder settings table when choosing settings.

These figures are YouTube’s recommended H.264 ingestion bitrates, not measured minimums or performance guarantees. Higher resolution and frame rate need more bitrate and encoding capacity. Choose a combination the PC can sustain while leaving upload headroom. YouTube recommends keeping total stream bitrate within available upload capacity and leaving 20% headroom; test outbound upload speed rather than relying on download speed. Other devices sharing the connection can reduce what is available to OBS. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

In OBS, set the output resolution and frame rate to match the stream you intend to publish. In the streaming encoder settings, select CBR, set the bitrate appropriate to that output, and use a two-second keyframe interval. Do not assume that selecting a recommended bitrate makes an unstable connection or underpowered PC adequate.
Connect OBS to YouTube and go live
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create or schedule an encoder stream and locate its server URL and stream key. You can also connect through OBS’s YouTube service option if it is available in your installation.
- Configure OBS. In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Select YouTube as the service and connect as prompted, or enter the server URL and stream key supplied by Live Control Room.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: anyone with the key may be able to connect an encoder to your stream. Do not publish it, include it in a screenshot, or share it in public troubleshooting posts. If it is exposed, replace or reset it through YouTube’s stream settings.
- Set the video and output settings. Choose your resolution, frame rate, bitrate, encoder and keyframe interval using the guidance above and the actual capacity of your PC and connection.
- Run a controlled test before announcing the stream. Use an unlisted or otherwise controlled broadcast and include movement and audio representative of the intended content.
- Start streaming from OBS. Watch the Live Control Room preview and stream health before treating the broadcast as ready for viewers.

Test the stream and monitor it during operation
A successful start in OBS does not by itself confirm that viewers are receiving a healthy broadcast. Before launch, check the Live Control Room preview and stream health indicators; then monitor them during operation. YouTube recommends checking that the event is accessible from channel and watch pages and on mobile devices, and monitoring audio and video. Its guidance on live stream metrics explains the available real-time information.
- Confirm the preview shows the expected picture and sound.
- Check upload speed and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
- Watch stream health for bitrate or connection problems.
- For local recording, confirm the file is growing and that the destination has enough free space.
- Have a person or process check OBS and YouTube after interruptions; the reviewed guidance does not establish guaranteed end-to-end uptime for a Windows PC and OBS.
Will YouTube archive a 24/7 livestream?
Not reliably as one complete replay. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. A 24/7 feed therefore is not a dependable way to create a complete YouTube replay. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

If retaining the content matters, make a separate local recording and verify that it is being written successfully. YouTube’s live streaming tips recommend checking local archive integrity and file growth. Make sure the recording drive has enough free space for your intended retention; a continuously growing file can eventually fill it.

OBS is connected, but YouTube has no preview
- Check that the stream key and server destination in OBS match the active stream in Live Control Room.
- Confirm the stream is started in OBS and that the correct scheduled or created event is open in YouTube.
- Allow for first-time live-stream enablement, which can take up to 24 hours.
Frames are dropping or the stream disconnects intermittently
OBS identifies dropped frames and intermittent disconnections as possible network-path problems. Check the PC’s outbound connection, shared network use, and stream health; test with more upload headroom or a lower bitrate if the connection cannot sustain the current setting. Consult OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting guide. Neither OBS nor the YouTube guidance cited here establishes a guaranteed recovery or continuous-uptime setup.

Video stutters or the PC struggles to encode
Reduce the output resolution or frame rate, or choose an encoder setting the computer can handle. YouTube’s bitrate figures do not certify a PC’s encoding performance. Retest with representative content and watch both OBS and YouTube’s stream health.
The live stream ended and the replay is missing or incomplete
For a broadcast longer than 12 hours, YouTube says capture may not occur at all. Use and verify a separate local recording when a complete retained copy is important; do not rely on the live archive as the sole backup.
