You can loop a prerecorded 1080p video on YouTube Live with OBS Studio: add the file as a looping media source, send it through YouTube’s encoder stream, and use a hardware H.264 encoder if your PC supports one. Start with 1080p30, 5 Mbps, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval. Test the actual PC and connection before leaving the broadcast unattended; hardware encoding helps reduce CPU work but does not guarantee that a particular low-power machine can sustain a stable stream.
Can you stream a prerecorded video on YouTube Live?
Yes. YouTube Live can receive an encoder-based stream from software such as OBS Studio, which can send a prerecorded file as a live broadcast while the media source loops. You need a channel eligible to livestream, the video file, a stable upload connection, and an encoder configuration your computer can maintain.
First-time live activation may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s encoder setup guidance. Activate and test ahead of the time you intend to broadcast.
Check channel and PC readiness
- Your channel must be verified and not subject to a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. YouTube’s general live-start guidance sets the minimum age for livestreaming at 16. See YouTube’s live-stream setup guidance and live streaming tips.
- Confirm the PC has a supported hardware encoder, if you plan to use one. OBS documents Intel Quick Sync, NVIDIA NVENC, and AMD AMF on compatible hardware and drivers. Availability and quality depend on the particular graphics hardware, generation, and drivers.
- Measure upload speed, not just download speed. YouTube recommends 20% upload headroom above the stream bitrate; other household uploads can consume that reserve.
- Use video and audio you have the rights to stream. A live broadcast does not make copyrighted footage or music permissible. YouTube’s copyright and monetization decisions are separate from whether OBS can technically loop the file.
Set up the YouTube stream and OBS scene
- Create an encoder stream: Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or select an encoder stream, then copy its stream key. Treat the key like a password; anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Configure OBS for YouTube: In OBS, select YouTube as the streaming service and use the recommended RTMPS option or preset where available. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP, when supported. Paste the stream key into OBS’s stream settings.
- Add the video: Create a scene, add the prerecorded file as a media source, and enable its loop behavior. OBS control labels can vary by version, so check the controls in your installed release rather than relying on a particular menu label.
- Check audio: If the file contains sound, confirm its levels move in the OBS audio mixer and listen to the preview. Make sure the source is not muted and that the selected audio track is included in the stream.
- Set the stream output: Use 1920 Ă— 1080 and 30 fps as the starting point for a typical 1080p video. Match the frame rate to the source and intended motion where practical; 60 fps is only useful when the material benefits from it and the PC and network can sustain it.
- Choose an encoder: Select an available hardware H.264 encoder—Quick Sync, NVENC, or AMF—if your system supports it. OBS says hardware encoders generally shift encoding work from the CPU to a specialized GPU component, but older hardware encoders can produce lower quality at a given bitrate. Update drivers and judge the result in a real test.
Recommended OBS settings for 1080p YouTube Live
YouTube’s live encoder recommendations for H.264 are a practical starting point. They are not the same as settings for uploading a finished video.

These are YouTube’s recommended live-ingest settings on its encoder settings page. For a low-power computer, begin at 1080p30 unless the source’s motion or intended presentation calls for 60 fps. In OBS, set output resolution and frame rate, then configure the encoder’s bitrate, CBR rate control, and two-second keyframe interval. The exact menu layout can differ among OBS versions and encoder choices.
At 5 Mbps, allow at least 6 Mbps of sustained upload capacity to preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. At 6 Mbps, allow at least 7.2 Mbps. These are arithmetic applications of the headroom recommendation, not guarantees of connection stability; test while other network use is representative.

Test the stream before leaving it running
- Start streaming from OBS and wait for the preview in YouTube’s Live Control Room.
- Check the stream health indicator and confirm that video and audio are arriving correctly.
- Test representative movement and audio. A static opening frame may conceal encoder or bandwidth problems that appear during busy scenes.
- Allow the media source to loop at least once and verify that the transition, audio, and image behave as expected.
- Monitor the broadcast long enough to catch dropped frames, connection instability, or a PC that becomes overloaded. YouTube’s streaming tips advise testing and leaving upload headroom.
A successful preview is evidence that the setup works at that moment, not a promise that a low-power PC, its cooling, or the home connection will remain reliable indefinitely.
Common problems and fixes
- The stream will not start: Check that live streaming has been activated, that the channel has no current restriction, and that the stream key in OBS matches the selected YouTube encoder stream. New live access may take up to 24 hours to become available.
- YouTube reports poor stream health or frames drop: Check upload capacity and competing network traffic, preserve the recommended headroom, and test at 30 fps rather than 60 fps. If needed, reduce output settings and retest rather than assuming the PC can sustain the target.
- The CPU is overloaded: Switch to a supported hardware encoder, close unnecessary applications, and test again. If no capable hardware encoder is available, the machine may not be suitable for reliable 1080p encoding at the chosen settings.
- The video stops instead of repeating: Recheck the media source’s loop setting in the OBS version installed and confirm the source file plays through. Test the end-to-start transition before relying on a long stream.
- The picture works but audio is missing: Inspect the source’s audio level and mute state in OBS, and verify that the chosen audio track is sent to the stream.
- The image looks worse than expected: Check that output resolution and frame rate are as intended, and remember that older hardware encoders may deliver lower quality at the same bitrate. YouTube transcodes live streams for different playback formats, so assess the received stream rather than only the local preview.
