OBS Settings for a 24/7 YouTube Nature Stream with Ambient Audio

Use YouTube’s codec-specific encoder recommendations, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval and sufficient upload headroom. Plan local recording because streams over 12 hours may not be archived.

For a 24/7 YouTube nature stream, begin with YouTube’s encoder guidance: use constant bitrate (CBR), set a two-second keyframe interval, and use RTMPS if your encoder supports it. For H.264, YouTube recommends 10 Mbps at 1080p30 or 17 Mbps at 1080p60. Treat these as ingest recommendations, not guarantees that your computer or internet connection can sustain them. Test the full video-and-audio setup and monitor YouTube’s stream health before leaving it unattended.

Recommended OBS settings for a nature stream

Set OBS to the format you want viewers to receive, then choose a codec and bitrate that your encoder and upload connection can maintain. The table shows YouTube’s H.264 examples; its published recommendations vary by codec, resolution and frame rate, so consult the current table for other combinations.

Setting Starting point Why it matters
Output resolution and frame rate Choose the intended stream format, such as 1920 × 1080 at 30 or 60 fps Higher resolution and frame rate affect image detail, encoding load and required bitrate. YouTube supports up to 60 fps; OBS notes that 60 fps can tax a system more than 30 fps. Test your specific setup. YouTube encoder settings; OBS overview.
Video codec and bitrate For H.264: 10 Mbps at 1080p30; 17 Mbps at 1080p60 These are YouTube’s recommendations for those H.264 formats, not a universal setting for every resolution, frame rate or codec. YouTube also supports H.265/HEVC and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS; use the corresponding recommendation and an encoder that supports your chosen codec. YouTube encoder settings.
Rate control CBR YouTube recommends constant bitrate for live ingest. YouTube encoder settings.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds This is YouTube’s stated recommendation. YouTube encoder settings.
Protocol RTMPS where supported Use the secure ingest protocol if it is available in your encoder and YouTube setup. YouTube encoder settings.
Audio Stereo AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS; 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps stereo are listed in YouTube’s advanced guidance Confirm the selected format is supported by your encoder and ingest configuration. YouTube encoder settings; YouTube advanced settings.

Set up OBS and verify the stream before leaving it on

  1. Choose the output format. In OBS, set the output resolution and frame rate to the stream format you intend to broadcast. If you are deciding between 30 and 60 fps, consider whether the additional smoothness is worth the higher system load and bitrate requirement; test representative motion in your footage.
  2. Select the encoder and bitrate. Use YouTube’s current codec-specific recommendations for your chosen resolution and frame rate. For H.264 at 1080p, the examples above are 10 Mbps at 30 fps and 17 Mbps at 60 fps. Do not transfer a bitrate from one format to another without checking the table.
  3. Set rate control and keyframes. Set rate control to CBR and the keyframe interval to two seconds. Keep it at or below four seconds, as YouTube specifies.
  4. Configure audio deliberately. For RTMP/RTMPS, use stereo AAC or MP3 as appropriate. YouTube’s advanced guidance lists 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps for stereo audio. Listen to the actual ambient track in a test stream for clipping, excessive quietness, unwanted gaps or an unintended mono mix.
  5. Connect OBS to YouTube Live. Create or schedule the live stream in YouTube Studio, then use the stream key and ingest details YouTube provides in OBS. Treat the stream key as a credential: do not show it on screen or share it. Check the preview and stream health in YouTube Studio before making the stream public.
  6. Leave network headroom. YouTube recommends about 20% spare upload bandwidth beyond the total streaming bitrate. That margin is not a guarantee on a shared or unstable connection. Test while other household or office traffic is present if that reflects normal conditions, then watch stream health for dropped frames or connection warnings.
  7. Enable and understand recovery settings. OBS has an automatic reconnect option in its advanced settings. It can help recover after a connection loss, but it cannot fix unstable internet or power, and it is not a promise of uninterrupted 24/7 operation. OBS advises leaving advanced defaults alone unless there is a reason to change them.
  8. Record locally if you need a dependable copy. Configure an OBS local recording as well as the live stream, then confirm the file exists and its size is increasing while recording. Storage needs depend on your recording settings and how long you retain footage; no single drive capacity suits every stream.

Plan around YouTube’s 12-hour archive and DVR limits

A continuous stream longer than 12 hours is not a dependable way to create a complete YouTube replay. YouTube says a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all; its DVR guidance also says rewind capability may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. These are separate limitations: an archive and viewers’ ability to rewind during a live broadcast are not the same thing. YouTube Help: Archive live streams; YouTube Help: DVR on live streams.

If you need a complete recording, keep a local archive and verify that it is being written. If you plan to publish replays, decide how you will retain and divide recordings. Do not assume a particular restart schedule will produce complete YouTube archives without verifying it against your channel’s current settings.

Rights checks for nature footage and ambient sound

Before going live, make sure you have the rights needed for both the picture and the audio. A license that permits personal playback or online upload may not necessarily permit live streaming, archiving the broadcast, or reusing the material in later videos. Read the actual license terms for each clip and sound recording, including any limits on territory, duration, attribution or commercial use. YouTube’s live setup guidance also tells creators to ensure their audio and video rights are in order. YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.

Keep records of licenses and permissions so you can respond to a claim or a question about a specific scene or track. Do not treat ambient sound as automatically cleared just because it is natural or recorded outdoors.

Troubleshoot common problems

Symptom Likely area to check What to do
YouTube reports unstable stream health or viewers see interruptions Upload capacity, competing network traffic, or connection stability Check the actual streaming bitrate and available upload bandwidth; YouTube recommends about 20% headroom above total streaming bitrate. Test again under representative network conditions and reduce the output demand if the connection cannot sustain it.
OBS shows dropped frames or struggles to encode Network congestion or system load Check OBS and YouTube status indicators to distinguish connection trouble from encoding strain. Test the chosen resolution and frame rate; moving from 60 fps to 30 fps can reduce system demands, but select a bitrate appropriate to the new output format.
Stream reconnects after a disconnect Temporary connection loss or other interruption Confirm automatic reconnect is enabled if useful, then investigate the underlying network or power problem. Reconnect is a recovery feature, not a substitute for stable infrastructure or monitoring.
Ambient audio is missing, distorted or unbalanced OBS audio source, track selection, levels or channel configuration Check that the intended source is active and routed to the stream mix. Listen to a private or unlisted test and confirm stereo output and the selected audio format before relying on the 24/7 feed.
No complete replay appears after a long broadcast YouTube’s archive duration behavior A stream over 12 hours may not be captured at all. Use a local recording when you need a complete copy, and verify that its file is growing during the stream.
A copyright claim or rights question arises Footage or sound permissions Review the license for the exact material and confirm it covers live streaming and any archive or reuse. Keep permission records and replace material you cannot substantiate.
