The best Hitchcock films make suspense feel different from one movie to the next: a view across a courtyard becomes a source of danger, a train journey turns into a chase, and an ordinary encounter can spiral into psychological menace. This editorial ranking weighs suspense construction, visual invention, performances, influence, and accessibility for new viewers. It is a considered guide, not a universal consensus.

How to read this ranking

There is no single authoritative answer to “What is Alfred Hitchcock’s best film?” Rotten Tomatoes’ guide orders films by Tomatometer, the British Film Institute’s Sight and Sound list reflects a poll of critics and programmers, and the American Film Institute’s recognition of Vertigo is specific to the mystery genre in the American canon. Those measures answer different questions, so none determines this list’s order. The entries below are ranked editorially across Hitchcock’s British period, Hollywood years, and later work.

The BFI’s 2022 Sight and Sound results include Rear Window, North by Northwest, and Psycho. The BFI page separately records that 846 critics, programmers, and curators participated in its 2012 poll; that figure applies to 2012, not 2022. AFI describes Vertigo as its greatest mystery film in the American canon, a genre-specific designation rather than a universal ranking. BFI: The Greatest Films of All Time · AFI Movie Club: Vertigo

The 20 best Alfred Hitchcock movies, ranked

  1. Rear Window (1954)

A compact, inviting starting point: photographer L. B. Jefferies watches his neighbors from his apartment window, and that limited viewpoint becomes both the film’s method and its suspense engine. The act of looking raises questions about obsession, privacy, and what can—or cannot—be known from a distance. The BFI calls attention to the film’s tension and “dangers of the gaze.”

    • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  2. Vertigo (1958)

Hitchcock’s most psychologically and formally ambitious choice near the top of this ranking follows a former detective caught in obsession, manipulation, fear, and loss. It rewards viewers willing to sit with unease rather than expect a straightforward adventure. AFI’s recognition of it as the greatest mystery film in the American canon gives its institutional standing a precise context.

  3. Psycho (1960)

A landmark for horror and suspense, Psycho uses a structural turn to upend expectations and make ordinary spaces feel threatening. The BFI describes it as a watershed for mainstream horror, while Rotten Tomatoes emphasizes its lasting contribution to the genre. Choose it when you want a film that is frightening as well as tightly engineered.

  4. North by Northwest (1959)

For the most immediately propulsive wrong-man adventure on this list, follow advertising executive Roger Thornhill as mistaken identity sends him across the country and into pursuit. Travel, comic exchanges, and memorable set pieces give the suspense a lighter, more expansive rhythm than Vertigo or Psycho. Rotten Tomatoes calls the film visually iconic and influential on action thrillers; it also appears in the BFI’s 2022 all-time results.

  5. Notorious (1946)

Espionage and romance are inseparable in this story of Alicia Huberman, recruited to infiltrate a circle of former Nazis in Brazil, and agent T. R. Devlin, who supervises her mission. Ingrid Bergman and Cary Grant anchor the emotional conflict, while Hitchcock’s direction keeps intimacy and danger in the same frame. It is an excellent pick for viewers who want a love story shaped by suspense.

  6. Shadow of a Doubt (1943)

A family visit turns unsettling when young Charlie grows suspicious of her charming uncle, also named Charlie. The domestic setting makes the threat feel close and personal rather than distant or grand. Rotten Tomatoes places it first in its current Hitchcock guide and describes it as his earliest classic and personal favorite; that is the guide’s characterization, not an independently verified statement from Hitchcock.

  7. The 39 Steps (1935)

This brisk British thriller is a strong way to see Hitchcock’s wrong-man and chase storytelling before his Hollywood period. Richard Hannay is swept into danger after meeting a woman who says she has uncovered a spy ring. Its pace and comic touches make it an accessible early feature, and a useful contrast with the later, more polished American films.

  8. Rebecca (1940)

Hitchcock’s first American film is a Gothic story about a newly married woman living in the shadow of her husband’s first wife, whose presence seems to haunt the estate. An unseen predecessor shapes the film’s tension around marriage, identity, and belonging. It won Best Picture, making it Hitchcock’s only film to receive that award.

  9. Strangers on a Train (1951)

A chance meeting between two men produces a chilling exchange premise: one suggests each kill the other’s troublesome acquaintance. The film turns that idea into mounting pressure through sharply arranged scenes and visual invention. Its setup is easy to grasp, making it one of Hitchcock’s most accessible thrillers even as its moral complications deepen.

  10. The Lady Vanishes (1938)

On a train crossing Europe, a traveler insists that a fellow passenger has disappeared, while everyone around her denies the woman was ever there. The mystery combines suspense with wit and gives the train setting the pleasure of a lively ensemble. It is one of the clearest examples of Hitchcock’s stylish British-period entertainment.

  11. Rope (1948)

Two young men conceal a murder during a dinner party, with the body hidden in plain sight as guests gather. Hitchcock concentrates attention on performance, staging, and the pressure of a crime that may be discovered at any moment. Its chamber-like design makes it a distinct option for viewers more interested in tension built within a room than in a chase across a landscape.

  12. The Birds (1963)

What begins with social comedy and flirtation escalates into a series of unexplained attacks in a California coastal town. The shift in tone—from everyday encounters to mounting threat—is central to the film’s unsettling effect. It belongs to Hitchcock’s best-known run of films, although its unexplained danger makes it less conventional than a mystery with a clearly stated crime and solution.

  13. To Catch a Thief (1955)

A lighter, glamorous change of pace, this crime story pairs Cary Grant’s retired cat burglar with Grace Kelly’s wealthy American traveler on the French Riviera. Its pleasures are flirtation, scenery, and the question of who is committing a string of jewel thefts. Choose it when you want Hitchcock with romance and charm rather than sustained dread.

  14. Foreign Correspondent (1940)

An American reporter sent to Europe becomes entangled in international intrigue on the eve of war. The film balances suspense and set pieces with comic relief, making it a useful bridge between the British thrillers and the Hollywood work that followed. It offers a broader, more outward-looking adventure than Hitchcock’s contained mysteries.

  15. Lifeboat (1944)

After a ship is sunk during wartime, survivors share a lifeboat with a German sailor. The survival setup turns the confined setting into a pressure chamber for questions of trust, cooperation, and leadership. It is a strong choice for viewers drawn to ensemble drama and sustained conflict in one location.

  16. Dial M for Murder (1954)

A husband plans his wife’s murder, but the scheme does not unfold as intended. The result is a tightly engineered crime plot in which timing and shifting knowledge matter as much as physical danger. Grace Kelly’s performance is one of the film’s notable strengths.

  17. The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956)

This globetrotting thriller follows an American couple whose son is kidnapped after they learn of a planned assassination. It is Hitchcock’s 1956 remake of his own 1934 film, not a separate title with the same year. The family’s effort to recover their child gives the espionage plot an urgent personal stake.

  18. Frenzy (1972)

Set in London, this late-career serial-murder thriller is among Hitchcock’s darker films. Its grim subject and tone make it a less welcoming first encounter than Rear Window or North by Northwest, but it belongs on a broad tour of his work for viewers interested in his later career.

  19. Suspicion (1941)

Joan Fontaine plays a woman whose growing distrust of her husband turns marriage into a psychological puzzle. Rather than relying mainly on pursuit or a public mystery, the film builds unease through a character’s uncertain reading of the person closest to her. It is a worthwhile choice for viewers who prefer intimate suspense to elaborate set pieces.

  20. The Trouble with Harry (1955)

A dead body discovered in the countryside prompts a succession of awkward, darkly comic efforts to decide what to do about it. This tonal outlier shows Hitchcock working in comedy rather than treating every corpse as the start of a conventional thriller. It rounds out the list with a more eccentric, gently macabre side of his filmography.

Notable omissions and a way to explore further

No twenty-film selection can represent every strand of Hitchcock’s career. Spellbound, The Wrong Man, and Marnie are plausible alternatives, depending on whether you want psychological suspense, a more grounded crime drama, or a later character study. The official Alfred Hitchcock filmography lists 54 titles, with years and plot summaries, and is a useful route into films beyond this ranking: Alfred Hitchcock official filmography.

For a compact institutional sampler, Universal Pictures At Home’s 2011 Alfred Hitchcock: The Essentials Collection lists five films: Rear Window, Vertigo, North by Northwest, Psycho, and The Birds.
