If an encoder loses power, it stops sending its video and audio feed to YouTube. YouTube says to end an encoder-based stream, stop sending content from the encoder—but its guidance does not specify how long an event stays open after an unexpected outage or exactly what viewers will see. Check the Live Control Room, restore a valid feed, and test your own recovery setup rather than relying on a guaranteed grace period.
What viewers and the channel owner can expect
The encoder is the device or software sending the live feed to YouTube. When it loses power, it cannot continue transmitting. YouTube’s encoder setup guide says, “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder.” That describes how an encoder stream is ended; it does not establish a universal timeout for a sudden loss of power or guarantee that the same live event will resume when power returns. YouTube’s encoder setup guide
There is no documented universal viewer-facing result for this interruption in the guidance cited here. Do not promise viewers a fixed frozen frame, slate, error message, reconnect screen, or a particular number of seconds or minutes before the event closes. What happens can depend on the event and stream settings, how long the feed is absent, and whether an encoder resumes sending.
Does the stream end if the encoder turns off?
The encoder stops transmitting when it loses power. YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop controls let an operator start or stop streaming from the encoder; YouTube does not describe them as a recovery guarantee after abrupt power loss or define precisely how they interact with that outage. Check whether YouTube is receiving a feed in Live Control Room instead of assuming the event is still open or has ended.

Will YouTube save the stream?
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is a duration-based archive rule, not a promise that an interrupted broadcast will produce a complete recording. If the archive matters, keep a local recording when your workflow permits and verify during a test that the local file is being written. YouTube’s encoder setup guide
How to recover after power returns
- Restore the equipment in order. Confirm the encoder has restarted and is producing a valid audio and video feed. If it has not, check the encoder’s output, error messages, and CPU load.
- Check the connection. If the encoder output looks healthy, check the outbound internet connection and whether the encoder can send its feed.
- Inspect Live Control Room. Check stream health and dashboard error messages to see whether YouTube is receiving the feed. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health. YouTube live streaming troubleshooting
- Confirm the event and feed are working before relying on them. If the event remains available and an encoder can resume sending, check the live player and control room rather than assuming recovery. The cited YouTube guidance does not promise that every outage preserves the same event.
How to reduce the chance of a repeat interruption
Test a backup encoder
A backup encoder can address failure of the primary encoding device, but rollover should be tested before a real broadcast. YouTube recommends stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable during a test, then confirming that the player rolls over to the backup. A configured backup is not proof that every power loss will preserve uninterrupted playback. YouTube live streaming tips

Use backup power for short outages
A UPS can keep compatible equipment powered during a brief interruption, but only within its capacity and runtime. Size it for the actual load and include essential network equipment if it also needs power. A UPS does not restart a failed encoder or ensure YouTube keeps an event live; this is a practical equipment measure, not a YouTube guarantee.
Prepare and monitor the broadcast
- Set up the encoder ahead of the event and preview the stream before going live.
- Monitor audio, video, and stream health during the broadcast, and check dashboard errors if the feed is disrupted.
- Keep a local recording if your production workflow supports it, and check that the archive file is growing during a rehearsal.
- Allow sufficient upload capacity for the primary and backup streams. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend 20% bandwidth headroom; the recommended upload bandwidth should account for both streams and that headroom. YouTube streaming tips
Choose protection for the failure you need to cover
| Option | What it addresses | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| UPS or battery backup | Loss of mains power, for as long as the connected equipment remains within the unit’s capacity and runtime. | Supported load, runtime at your actual load, protected outlets, and whether the encoder and necessary network gear are included. |
| Backup encoder or redundant setup | Failure of the primary encoding device, if the backup is configured to take over successfully. | Compatibility with your production workflow, backup power and network arrangements, takeover behavior, and a rehearsed YouTube player rollover. |
These options address different failure points: a UPS supplies temporary power to equipment, while an alternate encoder provides another encoding source. A setup may need both, and neither guarantees uninterrupted playback for viewers.
