How to Fix OBS Freezing While Looping Prerecorded Videos on YouTube

A frozen OBS YouTube stream can come from a source setting, local performance, the stream connection, or viewer-side buffering. Diagnose the symptom before changing settings.

First identify what is freezing: the video source, the OBS preview, the stream connection, or playback for viewers. Those symptoms point to different fixes. For a single local video, check the OBS Media Source’s Loop setting; for choppy OBS output, reduce rendering or encoding load; for rising dropped frames, investigate the connection to YouTube’s stream server.

Identify what is actually freezing

“Freezing” can describe several different problems. Watch OBS and, if possible, the YouTube playback at the same time before changing settings.

What you see Likely area to investigate
Only the prerecorded video stops or fails to replay; OBS remains responsive Media source type and playback settings
The OBS preview or other scene elements stutter, or OBS reports rendering or encoding overload Local scene rendering or encoding workload
OBS’s dropped-frame counter rises Connection stability or whether the connection can sustain the configured bitrate
Viewers report buffering, but OBS does not show dropped frames Viewer-side networks and devices, or delivery and transcoding conditions—not necessarily a failed local loop

OBS distinguishes dropped frames from viewer buffering: dropped frames indicate trouble maintaining a stable connection to the remote stream server or keeping up with the set bitrate, while viewers can buffer even when OBS is not dropping frames. See the OBS Project’s stream connection troubleshooting and stream buffering troubleshooting guides.

Check the prerecorded-video source and loop settings

For one local video file: use Media Source

  1. In OBS, add or select a Media Source for the local file.
  2. Open that source’s properties and confirm the correct media file is selected.
  3. Enable Loop. This is the setting that makes the file play again when playback completes.
  4. Do not confuse Loop with Restart playback when source becomes active. Restart playback controls what happens when the source becomes active in the scene; it does not replace looping after the file ends.
  5. Also distinguish Show nothing when playback ends: that controls the end state, not whether the file loops.

OBS documents these Media Source properties in its Media Sources guide. If the source itself stops at the end of the file while the rest of OBS continues normally, verify Loop before changing encoder or network settings.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

For a playlist: consider VLC Video

  1. Use OBS’s VLC Video source when you need a playlist rather than a single file.
  2. Confirm VLC is installed. The OBS documentation specifies that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
  3. Check the source’s Loop Playlist property. OBS documentation lists it as On by default, but verify the setting in your source.

VLC Video and Media Source serve different workflows; changing to a playlist source is not a general fix for a preview, encoding, or network problem.

If OBS itself stutters, reduce local rendering and encoding load

A local preview or output that stutters points toward the work OBS must render and encode. OBS notes that sources may use resources even when they are not visible, so hiding a source does not always eliminate its cost. Its encoding performance troubleshooting guide recommends reducing unnecessary GPU work and simplifying the scene.

  1. Simplify the scene. Remove sources and effects you do not need for this stream, including unnecessary high-resolution or animated elements.
  2. Reduce output resolution or frame rate if needed. Lowering either reduces workload but also reduces image detail or motion smoothness. OBS gives reducing 60 fps to 30 fps as an example when 60 fps is not working; it is a diagnostic adjustment, not a required setting for every system.
  3. On Windows, try running OBS as administrator. OBS lists this as a quick troubleshooting step for some GPU-overload situations. It is Windows-specific and is not proof that GPU overload caused a particular freeze.
  4. Check whether software encoding is the bottleneck. If CPU encoding is the limiting workload, a compatible hardware encoder may shift encoding work to a specialized component in the GPU. Availability and support depend on the operating system and hardware, and image quality can differ. Consult OBS’s hardware encoding guide for its discussion of NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel QSV, and Apple VideoToolbox; do not assume every encoder is available or equivalent on your system.

Lowering resolution or frame rate will not fix a media source configured not to loop, and a network adjustment will not repair local decoding or scene-rendering trouble. Change the branch that matches the symptom.

If dropped frames rise, troubleshoot the connection—not the loop

When OBS’s dropped-frame counter increases, the OBS Project points to an unstable connection to the remote server or a bitrate that the connection cannot sustain. That evidence does not by itself mean the video source stopped looping. Follow OBS’s connection troubleshooting guidance and focus on the path from OBS to the stream server and whether the configured bitrate is sustainable. Avoid treating a source-setting change as a cure for a connection problem.

If only viewers buffer, separate delivery from OBS playback

If OBS stays responsive and shows no dropped frames while viewers report buffering, first establish whether the problem affects one viewer or multiple viewers. Viewer network and device conditions can vary, and the platform’s delivery or transcoding capabilities can also matter. OBS’s buffering troubleshooting page covers this branch. Viewer buffering alone is not evidence that OBS’s local video loop has frozen.

What to collect if the problem continues
