You can install Ubuntu on a Contabo VPS and install OBS, but that alone does not make a dependable headless streaming server. Before committing to a plan, confirm that it provides the graphics and display capabilities OBS needs, then test encoding and outbound bandwidth with the stream settings you intend to use. Contabo’s setup flow is documented; compatibility and sustained OBS performance for a particular VPS plan are not established here.
Check whether a Contabo VPS can run headless OBS first
“Headless” means you operate the server without a monitor and local desktop session; it does not mean OBS can run without graphics support. OBS lists an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and an X window system or Wayland among its Linux requirements. Meeting those minimum compatibility requirements still does not guarantee that the server can encode and stream your chosen resolution, frame rate, and scene reliably.
- Ask Contabo about the exact VPS plan’s OpenGL and display-environment support, not just its CPU and memory specifications.
- Confirm which encoder you can use. OBS says a compatible hardware encoder can move encoding work off the CPU, but hardware availability and actual performance depend on the server.
- Check the plan’s available outbound throughput against the bitrate you plan to send.
- Run a real test stream with representative motion and audio before relying on the VPS for a scheduled or continuous broadcast.
The available documentation does not verify that a particular Contabo plan meets these requirements, nor does it validate a specific virtual display, launch command, or automation setup. Treat those as plan-specific questions to resolve with the provider and a test—not as guaranteed features of a generic VPS.
Provision Ubuntu and SSH access in Contabo
Contabo’s VPS/VDS first-install process runs through its Customer Control Panel. The documented flow is to select the instance, install a standard operating-system image, and set a Linux password or save an SSH public key. The control-panel article was updated June 26, 2025.

- Open Contabo’s Customer Control Panel and select the VPS or VDS instance you want to configure.
- Choose a standard Ubuntu operating-system image from the installation options available for that instance.
- Set the Linux password or save your SSH public key as part of the install flow, then complete the installation.
- Wait for the installation to finish and connect to the server using the access method you configured.
Cloud-Init templates are an optional customization for certain Linux operating systems; they are not required for a basic Ubuntu install, and not every template should be assumed to work with Ubuntu. Contabo’s documented flow does not establish that a selected plan has the graphics capability OBS needs.
Install OBS Studio on Ubuntu
OBS’s Linux installation page, dated August 26, 2021, gives this Ubuntu PPA and apt installation path and identifies Ubuntu 18.04 or newer. Because that guidance is several years old, check OBS’s current Linux package instructions and compatibility for your exact Ubuntu release before running the commands:

Check the current OBS instructions for your Ubuntu release. If the published PPA instructions remain appropriate for your system, the documented commands are:

Confirm that installation completed, then verify that OBS can start in the graphics/display environment available on the server. A successful package installation alone does not prove that a headless OBS session can render a scene or stream.
OBS lists X or Wayland and OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU support for Linux. The cited material does not validate a particular virtual-display package or a command for launching OBS on a Contabo VPS, so do not treat an unverified workaround as a supported deployment recipe.

Choose YouTube encoder settings for the output you want
YouTube’s encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest and lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1, with frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a keyframe interval of two seconds, not exceeding four seconds. Select only a codec that both your installed OBS build and available encoding hardware support.

These are YouTube’s H.264 ingestion recommendations, accessed October 3, 2026—not measured Contabo capacity guarantees. The figures are not interchangeable: choose the row for your resolution and frame rate, and account for the fact that a VPS’s available throughput and sustained encoding capacity have not been verified here.

- Rate control: use CBR.
- Keyframes: set a two-second interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- Bitrate: match YouTube’s recommendation to the H.264 resolution and frame rate you selected.
- Codec and encoder: select a codec and software or hardware encoder that the OBS build and VPS actually support.
YouTube transcodes incoming live video for different devices, but that does not remove the need to send a stable, correctly configured source stream. Treat the chosen output as a trade-off between picture detail, motion, and the VPS’s unverified encoding and network capacity.

Connect OBS to YouTube and validate the stream
Use YouTube’s live-streaming setup to obtain the ingest details for the broadcast, then enter the matching server and stream key in OBS. The exact YouTube interface can change; use the current labels shown in your account rather than relying on an old screenshot or guessed menu path. Keep the stream key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to that live destination.
- In YouTube’s current live-stream setup, create or select the intended broadcast and retrieve its ingest/server information and stream key.
- In OBS, enter the YouTube ingest details in its streaming configuration and select the compatible encoder, codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, CBR rate control, and keyframe interval described above.
- Start a test stream with audio and movement similar to the real program. A static desktop or silent test is not a meaningful check for a documentary feed containing narration, music, or moving footage.
- Watch YouTube’s stream-health information and OBS’s status while the test runs. Confirm the picture, audio, and connection remain stable for a representative period before scheduling a broadcast.
A successful connection at startup is not proof of sustained performance. Repeat the test if you change resolution, frame rate, codec, encoder, or scene complexity.

Technical ability to send a video to YouTube does not establish that you have the right to broadcast its contents or that the channel complies with YouTube’s monetization policies. For documentaries built from archive footage, music, narration, or clips, confirm that your licenses cover live streaming and the territories and uses relevant to your channel. Review YouTube’s current copyright and reused-content rules before building a recurring broadcast around material you did not create.

- Keep records of permissions and licenses for third-party footage, stills, and music.
- Do not assume that publicly viewable, old, or credited material is automatically cleared for a live broadcast.
- Make the documentary’s own commentary, research, narration, and editorial contribution clear; adding a stream schedule does not itself establish originality or policy compliance.

Troubleshoot by separating graphics, encoding, and network failures

Budget for the server and test before relying on it
No Contabo VPS price or plan-specific OBS performance figure is established here, so compare the provider’s current plan cost with the graphics capability, outbound throughput, and sustained encoding capacity you need. A low monthly server price is not a useful comparison if the plan cannot pass a full-length stream test.
Include the time and operational burden of maintaining Ubuntu, securing access credentials, checking stream health, and recovering from failures. Do not assume that the setup described here automatically restarts OBS or recovers a dropped YouTube connection; the cited Contabo and OBS installation material does not establish that automation.
