Possibly—but a Contabo plan’s advertised vCPU count cannot tell you whether it will continuously transcode your particular 1080p video in real time. Full transcoding means decoding and re-encoding video, which is a sustained workload. Contabo’s standard VPS plans use shared vCPUs; its Max Performance VPS, sold as VDS, documents dedicated CPU cores and reserved RAM, making it a more relevant candidate to test for CPU-heavy encoding. Neither specification proves that a plan can handle a specific stream. Run your exact workload on the instance you intend to use before relying on it 24/7.
Also distinguish transcoding from relaying or stream-copying media that is already encoded appropriately. A relay can avoid video encoding; full transcoding cannot. The sources available do not provide a controlled Contabo benchmark for either workflow.
What does “transcode” mean for a 24/7 stream?
In full transcoding, the server decodes a source video and encodes it again in the format and settings sent to YouTube. This requires sustained compute, and the result depends on the source, frame rate, codec, encoder and quality preset—not simply the output resolution.
If the files are already encoded in a format and configuration suitable for YouTube, a relay or stream-copy workflow may send the existing video without re-encoding it. That is a different, generally less CPU-intensive task. Confirm what your software is actually doing before sizing a VPS: a command or workflow that re-encodes every frame is not equivalent to one that copies an existing video stream.

What Contabo’s VPS specifications can—and cannot—tell you
Contabo’s product documentation describes its Core and Performance VPS products as KVM virtual servers with shared vCPUs and fixed RAM. The Core VPS documentation reviewed lists configurations from 4 to 18 vCPUs and 8 to 96 GB RAM. Performance VPS uses shared vCPUs on newer AMD EPYC generations and NVMe storage. These are resource descriptions, not encoding benchmarks. Check Contabo’s current VPS details; product names and specifications can change.
Contabo’s Max Performance VPS, sold as VDS, documents dedicated CPU cores and reserved RAM. The VDS plans shown in its documentation list AMD EPYC 7282 CPUs at 2.8 GHz. Dedicated cores may make this family more relevant to sustained CPU-heavy encoding than a shared-vCPU VPS, but the specifications do not establish real-time performance for your encoder and source. The reviewed Contabo sources do not publish a controlled test showing how many frames per second, or what particular 1080p workload, a named plan can encode continuously. Do not treat vCPU count, RAM, CPU generation or a product label as proof that a stream will stay ahead of real time.
Set the YouTube output before choosing a plan
YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends H.264 at 5 Mbps for 1080p30 and 6 Mbps for 1080p60. It calls for constant bitrate (CBR), recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS for ingest. These are YouTube settings, not a measure of the CPU your VPS needs to encode the source. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions before configuring your encoder.

YouTube also automatically transcodes an incoming live stream into multiple output formats for viewers. As YouTube explains, “YouTube will automatically transcode your live stream to create many different output formats so that all of your viewers across many devices and networks can watch.” Your server’s encoding task is to produce a compatible ingest stream; it does not need to generate every viewer rendition.
Check the network separately from encoding
A single outbound feed to YouTube needs a stable upload path at the selected ingest bitrate, with margin for variation. Compare the target bitrate with measured upload stability on the actual VPS rather than assuming the connection will sustain its advertised port rate continuously.

Contabo’s documentation lists port rates by plan and says there is no default bandwidth cap, subject to its fair-use policy. Contabo says exceptionally high or disruptive use may be throttled. A listed port rate or the absence of a default cap is not a guarantee of sustained throughput for an individual VPS. See Contabo’s bandwidth information for the current policy.
How to test a Contabo VPS for your stream
- Identify the workload. Establish whether your files will be re-encoded or sent using relay/stream-copy. Do not size for the lighter workflow if your actual setup transcodes.
- Fix the settings. Choose the representative source resolution and frame rate, output codec, encoder and preset, and target YouTube bitrate. For YouTube’s recommended H.264 settings, use 5 Mbps for 1080p30 or 6 Mbps for 1080p60, CBR and a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds).
- Run it on the intended instance. Use the exact files and encoder configuration you plan to operate. Test for a sustained, representative interval, not just a brief successful start. Check that encoding keeps up with real time, dropped frames do not accumulate and CPU contention does not destabilize the process.
- Test the YouTube ingest. Send a representative test stream and monitor YouTube’s stream health messages. YouTube advises testing with content similar to the real stream and checking health during the event.
- Compare CPU allocations when encoding is CPU-heavy. If evaluating a shared-vCPU VPS against a dedicated-core VDS, run the same test under the same conditions. Do not choose by RAM or advertised core count alone.
- Plan for operational failures. For a business-critical stream, design for process supervision, restart recovery, alerts and a fallback source or stream plan. Those safeguards are part of your deployment; they are not guarantees provided by Contabo or YouTube.
Common problems and what to check
- The encoder falls behind or dropped frames accumulate: check whether the workload is re-encoding, then review CPU use and contention, encoder preset and source settings. Repeat the test with the intended configuration; a short launch test does not establish sustained capacity.
- The encoder keeps up, but YouTube reports poor stream health: check the configured codec, bitrate, CBR setting, keyframe interval and RTMPS ingest, then investigate upload stability independently of CPU performance.
- The VPS works during a brief test but fails under longer operation: extend the test to a representative sustained interval and monitor for resource contention, process failure and network instability. Build supervision and recovery into the deployment.
- A listed port rate looks sufficient, but the feed is unstable: measure the actual outbound path and leave margin above the target bitrate. Contabo’s fair-use policy and possible throttling for exceptionally high or disruptive use mean a plan listing should not be read as an individual throughput guarantee.
