Streamlabs Desktop and OBS at a glance
Streamlabs says Streamlabs Desktop is built on top of the OBS engine. That shared technical foundation does not make the applications identical: OBS Studio offers a configurable scene-and-source workspace, while Streamlabs Desktop packages streaming controls with features from Streamlabs’ creator ecosystem.

Which one should you use?
Choose OBS Studio for Linux or a modular setup
OBS is the clearer choice if you use Linux: its current product page lists Linux alongside Windows and macOS, while Streamlabs’ current FAQ download details list Windows and macOS. OBS also suits people who want to build a workspace around scenes, sources, hotkeys, docks, plugins, or scripts rather than rely mainly on an integrated bundle.
Choose Streamlabs Desktop for built-in creator tools
Try Streamlabs Desktop if having overlays, alerts, widgets, and related account tools together is more important than choosing each extension yourself. Its free tier lets you try the core workflow. Before paying for Ultra, check whether its current benefits—such as multistreaming or premium overlays—are features you actually need.

Do not choose based on a blanket “easier” or “lighter” claim
An integrated setup may reduce the number of separate tools you need to assemble, while OBS offers more modular control. Which feels easier depends on your scenes, equipment, and preferences. The official information reviewed does not establish a controlled performance winner, so do not assume one application always uses less CPU or runs better on the same computer.
Check your computer and operating system
OBS Studio
The OBS download page lists Windows 10/11, macOS 13+, and Linux. The OBS Project cautions that hardware needs vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity, and says: “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” Use the official OBS system requirements for the caveats and check the download page for current OS support.

Streamlabs Desktop
Streamlabs’ FAQ lists Windows 10+ and macOS 12+ in its download details. Its system-requirements article gives vendor recommendations that include 16 GB or more of RAM and a 512 GB SSD or larger, as well as processor, graphics, and Ethernet guidance. These are recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular scene or stream will perform well. The requirements article has differing macOS wording in its minimum and recommended lines, so use the FAQ’s more conservative macOS 12+ minimum and confirm compatibility on the live download page.
Streamlabs’ requirements article also gives a 3.6 Mbps or better figure for 720p at 30 fps for most platforms. Treat it as Streamlabs’ guidance, not a universal bandwidth guarantee: platform settings, stream conditions, and other network use can affect what works in practice.

What the price difference really means
OBS Studio is free and open source. Streamlabs Desktop also has a free tier, so a subscription is not required simply to try its basic application. Streamlabs’ FAQ listed Ultra at $27/month or $189/year billed annually when checked in 2026. Prices and inclusions can change; compare the current Ultra offer with the specific premium tools you plan to use rather than treating it as a required cost of streaming.
If you are deciding between the two, compare the whole setup you want: the applications, any extensions or overlays, and the time you are willing to spend configuring them. A free application can still involve separate tools, while an included feature can matter only if you will use it.

When desktop streaming software is the wrong tool

Common decision mistakes
- Assuming shared engine means identical software: Streamlabs describes Desktop as built on the OBS engine, but its interface and bundled creator tools differ from OBS Studio.
- Assuming system requirements predict your results: scene complexity, encoder, output settings, and hardware all matter; published requirements are not comparative benchmarks.
- Paying for features before checking them: confirm which Streamlabs benefits are free and which require Ultra, and verify the current offer before subscribing.
- Ignoring destination support: check the current platform setup instructions for the service you intend to stream to, especially if you need a less common destination.
