The Mac’s electricity cost depends on its measured average power draw and your local tariff; its full cost also includes hardware amortization and any incremental connectivity or backup costs. A cloud total depends on the provider, region, instance, storage, network charges, and billing minimum. Compare those inputs—not a Mac’s maximum power figure against an arbitrary low-cost virtual machine.
What a fair comparison includes
For a stream sent to YouTube, the computer or cloud server encodes and uploads the source feed. YouTube then transcodes the live ingest into formats for viewers. Do not add viewer-delivery costs to one option unless that option actually serves viewers itself.
Compare the same schedule, stream settings, and service scope on both sides. Include the costs that apply to your setup, and label assumptions so another creator can substitute their own figures.
| Cost or requirement | M2 Mac mini at home | Cloud server |
|---|---|---|
| Compute | Electricity plus the Mac’s purchase cost spread over an assumed useful life | Provider, region, instance or host, operating system, and required runtime |
| Storage and networking | Any incremental storage or internet cost; include backup connectivity only if needed | Persistent storage and applicable public IP, network, and data-transfer charges |
| Operation and recovery | Local power, internet, restart, maintenance, and backup arrangements | Monitoring, restart or recovery services, and the provider’s billing terms |
| Software compatibility | Can run a macOS-only encoder if your workflow requires one | A generic Linux VM is suitable only if the encoder and workload run reliably on it; a macOS requirement changes the cloud option |
Estimate the Mac mini’s monthly cost
Use measured power, not a specification as your average
Apple lists 7 W idle and 50 W CPU maximum for a 2023 Mac mini configuration with an M2 processor, 24 GB unified memory, and a 2 TB SSD. Those are reference figures for that configuration, not a measurement of a Mac encoding and uploading your particular stream. Measure wall power with a wattmeter during a representative run if you want a decision-grade estimate.

Calculate the energy portion as:
average watts ÷ 1,000 × operating hours × electricity price per kWh
For a 24/7 schedule, use the actual hours in the billing period and the tariff that applies where the Mac is located. If you have no measurement, show clearly labeled low, typical, and high power assumptions rather than presenting the 50 W CPU maximum as the expected draw.

Use the actual price and configuration you would buy; availability and configuration can vary. Add only costs caused by this streaming setup, such as extra storage, backup power, cooling, connectivity, or replacement. Do not count an existing internet plan as an incremental expense unless the stream changes what you pay for it.

First decide whether macOS is required
AWS offers EC2 M2 Mac instances using 2023 Mac mini hardware with an M2 processor, 8 CPU cores, 10 GPU cores, and 24 GiB of memory. AWS bills EC2 Mac by Dedicated Host, with a 24-hour minimum allocation; pricing varies by region. Check the price for the region and runtime you actually need in AWS’s pricing calculator before comparing it with a home machine.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
If your encoder works on a supported generic operating system, price an instance that can sustain the workload rather than choosing an arbitrary small VM. Confirm encoder compatibility, processing headroom, storage, and network terms before treating its quoted compute price as the whole bill.

Check whether the provider bills continuously or in minimum blocks, and account for persistent disks, public IPs, monitoring, and any restart or recovery service you need. For a feed uploaded to YouTube, distinguish outbound source traffic from a cloud video-distribution architecture. An AWS managed live-streaming example is not a like-for-like estimate for one encoder sending its feed to YouTube.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare the two totals
- Fix the workload: record the stream schedule, target resolution and frame rate, encoder, and whether the destination is YouTube ingest.
- Build the local estimate: use the Mac configuration’s real purchase price, a representative measured wall draw, your tariff, and an explicit useful-life assumption.
- Price the actual cloud choice: specify provider, region, operating system, instance or dedicated host, runtime, storage, and applicable network charges.
- Include only relevant extras: add local backup power or connectivity and cloud monitoring or recovery if your plan requires them.
- Compare monthly totals under the same run schedule: vary uncertain inputs—especially measured draw, hardware life, cloud region, and host minimums—and show the resulting scenarios rather than claiming a universal break-even point.
Stream settings that affect the comparison
The encoder’s output bitrate influences the required sustained upload capacity and the outgoing data volume. YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends H.264 bitrates of 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 14 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are platform recommendations, not a requirement that every documentary stream use those settings; choose settings for the source material and available uplink.
- YouTube recommends RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingest.
- Use constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Test with representative motion and audio, then monitor stream health. A quiet still frame may not reveal problems that appear in footage with movement.
- Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance when configuring an actual stream, because platform settings can change.
The encoder connects using YouTube’s server URL and stream key. Treat the key as a secret: enter it only in the intended encoder or streaming service, and replace it in YouTube if it is exposed. The source upload must stay within the available upstream capacity; if it does not, reduce the output settings or resolve the connection limitation before relying on a 24/7 schedule.
Common cost and reliability mistakes
- Using 50 W as the Mac’s normal draw: it is Apple’s CPU-maximum reference for the cited configuration, not a measured stream average. Measure the actual workload or show a range.
- Comparing unlike cloud products: an AWS Mac Dedicated Host has a 24-hour minimum, while a generic Linux VM is a different product with different OS compatibility. Name the exact option and terms.
- Counting viewer delivery on only one side: a feed uploaded to YouTube is not the same architecture as a cloud service that packages and distributes video to viewers.
- Ignoring single points of failure: a home Mac depends on local power, internet, and restart arrangements. A cloud instance avoids dependence on that home setup but still needs appropriate monitoring and recovery planning.
- Assuming the stream itself grants monetization: YouTube’s copyright and monetization rules still apply to prerecorded content. Use material you own or are licensed to stream, and ensure the channel meets current platform policies; uninterrupted playback alone does not establish eligibility.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a prerecorded YouTube channel, StreamNeo keeps uploaded videos live in a loop from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are available in India, and card checkout is available worldwide.
