What did Kenneth Petty go to prison for?
Attempted first-degree rape conviction
The Los Angeles Times reported that Petty was convicted in 1995 of attempted first-degree rape in connection with a 1994 Queens case involving Jennifer Hough. He served about four and a half years in prison. This is a reported conviction, not merely an allegation in Hough’s later civil lawsuit.
Sex-offender registration and the federal case
Hough’s 2021 federal complaint identified Petty as a registered Level 2 sex offender. The complaint alleged that he failed to register after moving to California. A 2026 LegalClarity summary reports that Petty later pleaded guilty to failing to register there and was sentenced to three years of probation, one year of home detention, and a $55,000 fine.

The same LegalClarity summary says a 2023 probation violation involving threatening remarks resulted in 120 additional days of home detention. These later federal-case details come from secondary reporting; the cited material does not establish the case’s full current status through a docket review.
A separate manslaughter plea
Hough’s 2021 federal complaint also stated that Petty had pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter in a separate case. That statement is in the pleading; the sources cited here do not provide further details about that case.

What happened in Jennifer Hough’s lawsuit?
In August 2021, Hough filed a federal civil complaint seeking $15 million, according to the Los Angeles Times. She alleged intimidation, harassment, emotional distress, and pressure to recant her account of the 1994 case. Those are allegations in a civil pleading, not findings that a court established.
The complaint alleged that an associate offered Hough $20,000 and that people acting for the couple offered as much as $500,000 in exchange for a recantation. The amounts and the alleged offers should be understood as claims made in the complaint. The Los Angeles Times reported in September 2021 that Petty’s lawyer declined to comment and that the defendants’ legal teams had not yet filed a response at that point. The cited sources do not establish the final disposition of every related civil claim, so they do not support saying that the case was settled, dismissed, or finally adjudicated.

What has Minaj said about criticism of Petty’s past?
In comments quoted by the Los Angeles Times, Minaj said: “I didn’t know that in our society, you have to be plagued by your past. I didn’t know that people can’t turn over a new leaf.” That is her response to criticism, not a court ruling or a resolution of Hough’s allegations. Hough, also quoted by the Times, said: “What they did to me and my family wasn’t OK.” Her statement reflects her account; it does not by itself establish the civil claims.
