Estimate it from three separate factors: the VPS price for the location you choose, that location’s outbound-traffic terms, and whether the server only relays an already-encoded feed or must also encode the video. OVHcloud’s worldwide page lists VPS-1 starting at $4.54 per month, but this is a displayed starting rate—not a regional, tax-inclusive checkout quote—and some Asia-Pacific plans have monthly traffic quotas that can make continuous streaming impractical.
What goes into the monthly cost?
Build the estimate in this order. Keep the server’s advertised port speed separate from its data-transfer policy and from its ability to encode your video.
- Choose the datacentre location. The selected country or region affects the applicable price and traffic terms. OVHcloud’s worldwide range lists unlimited traffic, while its Singapore VPS page shows specific monthly quotas and a post-quota speed cap.
- Check the plan’s current local price and billing terms. The figures below are worldwide-page starting prices in US dollars, checked in 2026. They are not guaranteed prices for every location or final tax-inclusive checkout amounts.
- Estimate the stream’s monthly transfer. Use the bitrate sent from your server to YouTube, not the total bitrate watched by your audience.
- Decide whether the VPS relays or encodes. Relaying a feed that is already encoded is a different workload from producing the encode on the VPS.
- Allow for operations. A 24/7 channel needs a plan for connection failures and stream restarts; the monthly server price alone does not establish uninterrupted service.
OVHcloud’s displayed VPS starting prices
OVHcloud’s worldwide product page calls this family “VPS 2027.” It lists the following starting prices and specifications. Prices are the page’s displayed US-dollar monthly starting rates, checked in 2026, not a quote for every region or configuration.

These plans list daily backup. A public bandwidth figure describes a port-speed specification; it does not tell you how much monthly data is included, whether sustained throughput will meet your needs, or whether the plan can encode your particular source. Before treating any figure as your total, check the selected datacentre’s checkout price, taxes, storage, add-ons and traffic terms on OVHcloud’s worldwide VPS page.

Estimate the stream’s monthly data transfer
For a continuous encoder feed, estimate decimal terabytes with this formula:
Monthly decimal TB ≈ bitrate in Mbps × seconds in billing month ÷ 8,000,000

For a 30-day month, use 2,592,000 seconds. This calculation estimates payload transfer from a constant-bitrate stream; it is arithmetic, not a measured invoice or a claim about a provider’s billing units. Protocol overhead can increase actual network use.

YouTube’s encoder guide, checked in 2026, recommends H.264 at 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 6 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps. It also recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (not exceeding four seconds), and RTMPS for encrypted ingest. These are encoder-feed rates: YouTube transcodes live video into multiple output formats, so do not multiply the VPS transfer estimate by your viewers’ downstream playback traffic. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. That is a connection-capacity allowance, not an addition to the monthly quota calculation. A VPS port-speed listing alone does not confirm regional traffic allowance, sustained throughput or reliable operation; YouTube warns that a network disruption can break a stream. How Asia-Pacific traffic quotas change the estimate
Do not apply the worldwide page’s “unlimited traffic” wording to every location. OVHcloud’s Singapore page lists monthly quotas of 500 GB for VPS-1, 1 TB for VPS-2 and VPS-3, and 3 TB for VPS-4. It says that after the quota, bandwidth is capped at 10 Mbps. These are Singapore terms shown on the page checked in 2026; other Asia-Pacific locations may have different terms. Check the specific datacentre before choosing a plan.

The comparison is an estimate against the published quota, not a prediction of an overage fee or exact billing treatment; the cited Singapore page does not establish those details. Consult OVHcloud’s Singapore VPS terms. Outside the Asia-Pacific exception, the worldwide page lists unlimited traffic, but verify the chosen location’s local terms and checkout total before relying on that wording.

Relaying an already-encoded feed
If the video is encoded elsewhere and the VPS only forwards the feed to YouTube, focus on sustained network capacity, the location’s monthly traffic terms, and how the relay software behaves after a connection interruption. The plan’s listed vCores and RAM are useful specifications, but they do not by themselves prove that a given relay configuration will remain stable.

Encoding video on the VPS
If the VPS must encode the source in real time, CPU and memory demands depend on the software, source, codec, resolution and frame rate. OVHcloud’s plan listing does not establish which tier can encode a particular workload, and YouTube’s bitrate recommendations are ingest settings—not OVHcloud performance benchmarks. Test the exact workload on the selected tier before treating it as adequate; there are no benchmark results here to support a tier recommendation.
Plan for a channel, not just a server bill
YouTube’s setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that a single live event can remain active indefinitely. For a 24/7 channel, design a session and restart workflow, and verify YouTube Live’s current constraints for your setup rather than assuming one event can run forever. - Keep the encoder or relay’s restart behavior in the cost and operations plan.
- Test the exact bitrate and workload for a sustained run, rather than inferring reliability from the listed port speed.
- Account for traffic overhead and check the provider’s current regional policy, especially where a quota applies.
- Do not count audience playback as traffic served by the VPS when it is YouTube delivering the transcoded stream.
