For a combined overlay, StreamElements documents an editor that can bring several elements together; for customizable YouTube chat, Streamlabs documents a Chat Box that you can add to OBS as a browser source. These are feature-based choices, not tested rankings. Preview any widget in your actual scene and keep only what serves the stream.
Choose widgets by what your stream needs
A widget is an on-screen element added to a broadcast scene. It may notify viewers about an event, show chat, or display a small piece of stream information. You do not need every available widget: each should have a clear job and should not obscure the documentary, presenter, captions, or other important content.
- Alerts: Notify viewers about supported events, such as a subscription. OBS describes alerts as a way to thank viewers for following, donating, and subscribing. OBS alert setup guide.
- Chat box: Show live messages on the stream canvas. This can suit a discussion or watch-party format; for a documentary-first presentation, consider whether chat adds value without distracting from the video.
- Labels and event lists: Show one item, such as the latest event, or a short history of recent events.
- Goals: Show progress toward a target when that information is relevant to the audience and the stream.
- Custom widgets: Support more tailored behavior or design. StreamElements documents custom widgets built with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, along with stream events and an API.
Which widget service fits?
The official documentation describes available features and setup, not comparative visual quality, latency, reliability, or resource use. Choose based on the widget job, whether you want several elements in one overlay, the YouTube features you need, and how you will add the result to your broadcast software.

Check YouTube support and prerequisites
YouTube lists StreamElements and Streamlabs among third-party live-stream tools and explains that the YouTube Live Chat API can let external apps read, send, and moderate messages in real time. YouTube also states that listed third-party products are not made or endorsed by Google. StreamElements chatbot on YouTube
StreamElements’ support instructions say the stream must be public and live for its chatbot to join. The page, updated in August 2024, also describes some YouTube loyalty features—including giveaways, stream store, viewer queue, and media requests—as unavailable. Because those limits may change, verify current account behavior before relying on them. The guide also recommends selecting Live chat rather than Top chat so bot messages are visible. Streamlabs chat display
Streamlabs explicitly documents displaying YouTube chat in its Chat Box overlay. Its guide covers visual settings and message handling; consult it for the current controls and setup details. Streamlabs Chat Box guide.
Add a widget to an OBS scene
- Configure the widget with its provider. Choose an alert, chat box, or other overlay and set the provider-side options you need. For Streamlabs, locate the widget URL using its widget URL instructions. For alerts, OBS describes using a provider such as Streamlabs or StreamElements.
- Open the intended scene in OBS. Add a Browser source, paste the provider’s overlay or widget URL, and set dimensions appropriate to the scene. Follow the provider’s current instructions for the exact URL and settings.
- Position and preview it in context. Check that messages, names, and alerts remain legible and do not cover important video content or captions. Trigger or preview supported events using the provider’s available preview controls.
- Reuse sources thoughtfully across scenes. Streamlabs recommends reusing an existing Chat Box source rather than duplicating it, to avoid duplicated notification sounds. Its guide also recommends leaving “Shutdown source when not visible” unchecked when timed settings or chat continuity across scene changes matter.
OBS notes that alerts do not require an OBS plugin: “Note: you do NOT require any plugins to use alerts in your stream”. The setup uses the provider’s alert URL as a Browser source. OBS Project.

Keep an overlay readable and purposeful
- Use the smallest set of widgets that supports the stream’s format.
- Check the overlay against the actual scene, including documentary footage, lower thirds, subtitles, and other on-screen text.
- Keep chat and event notifications visually distinct from the program video so viewers can tell them apart.
- Test scene changes and message timing before going live; remove elements that overlap, distract, or do not provide useful information.
Troubleshoot common widget problems
