Add chapters to each source video in YouTube Studio by editing its description: start with 00:00, add at least three timestamps in ascending order, and make each chapter at least 10 seconds long. Save the video, then check its public watch page. These chapters belong to the source video; do not assume they will appear on a separate 24/7 live broadcast or its replay.

Sign in to YouTube Studio and open Content.

Select the source video you want to edit.

In Description, add one timestamp and descriptive chapter title per line. The first timestamp must be
00:00. Include at least three timestamps in ascending order, and ensure every chapter is at least 10 seconds long. See YouTube’s video-chapter guidance. -
Save the video.

Open the public watch page and check that the chapter divisions and labels match the video. Viewers can select chapters in the player or find the titles in the description.

How to write clear timestamp lines

Put each timestamp at the beginning of a separate line, followed by a space and a concise title.

Check that each chapter lasts at least 10 seconds before adding the next timestamp.

Describe what viewers will actually find at that point, rather than using a general label that does not distinguish the section.
Manual chapters and automatic chapters
Manual chapters are the timestamps and titles you enter in the description. They take precedence over automatic chapters. Automatic chapters can be enabled or disabled in a video’s advanced settings, but YouTube does not make them available for every video. Its stated limitations include active channel strikes and potentially inappropriate content. For details, see YouTube’s video-upload guidance.

What chapters change for viewers
Chapters divide a video into labeled sections with individual previews. Viewers can jump to a chapter from the player or use the chapter titles in the description. YouTube describes them as sections that “break up a video into different sections.” See YouTube’s guidance on chapters and seeking features.
What this means for a 24/7 live stream and its replay
Keep three things separate: the uploaded source video, the continuous live broadcast that uses it, and any replay or archive created from that broadcast. YouTube’s chapter guidance explains how to edit chapters on a video, while its live-stream guidance covers live broadcasts and replays; it does not establish that chapter metadata from a source video carries over to a separate broadcast or its replay. If the broadcast creates a replay and you want chapters there, inspect that replay separately and add or confirm chapters on it as a video. Whether a particular playout service transfers source-video chapter information is service-specific; do not rely on it without documentation from that service or a direct check.

If chapters do not appear

Check the format: confirm the description starts with
00:00, includes at least three timestamps in ascending order, and gives each chapter at least 10 seconds. -
Confirm the edit was saved: return to the public watch page after saving and check the description and player.

Check for automatic chapters: manual timestamps override them, so review the description for the manual chapter list you intended to publish.

Consider eligibility: automatic chapters are not available for every video. Add manual timestamps instead, while following YouTube’s chapter requirements.

Check the right object: chapters on a source upload do not establish that a separate live broadcast or replay has the same markers.
