Does YouTube Live Support 4K 60fps at 10-Bit Color?

YouTube Live supports 4K/2160p at 60 fps and 10-bit HDR when the source and encoder use HEVC Main 10 with the right color settings. Here’s how to configure and verify the workflow.

Yes. YouTube Live supports 4K/2160p at 60 fps, and its HDR guidance specifies 10-bit video using H.265/HEVC. That means a 4K60 10-bit HDR stream is supported when the source, encoder, signal settings, and ingest protocol all match. YouTube support alone does not guarantee that a particular encoder or codec can deliver the combination.

What YouTube supports—and what 10-bit means here

YouTube’s undated live encoder settings include 4K/2160p at 60 fps and frame rates up to 60 fps. Its undated HDR streaming guide specifies 10-bit video, H.265/HEVC, BT.2020 color, and either PQ or HLG transfer characteristics. YouTube recommends HLG.

The two requirements are compatible, but the encoder must support their combination: 2160p60, HEVC Main 10, 10-bit HDR, and the required color metadata. A device that can output 4K60 is not necessarily capable of sending 10-bit HDR at that resolution and frame rate.

Choose the codec and plan the bitrate

YouTube’s published 4K60 bitrate guidance gives these figures. The settings page is undated; the figures below are from the page accessed October 3, 2026. For HDR, use the HEVC row: YouTube’s HDR guidance does not support AV1 for HDR.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Codec / use Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate Use for 10-bit HDR?
H.265/HEVC, 4K60 10 Mbps 35 Mbps Yes; this is the codec YouTube specifies for HDR.
AV1, 4K60 10 Mbps 35 Mbps No; YouTube’s HDR guidance excludes AV1.
H.264, 4K60 14 Mbps 50 Mbps No; YouTube specifies HEVC for HDR.

These are YouTube’s published encoder figures, not a guarantee that a connection with exactly the recommended bitrate will remain stable. Allow network headroom beyond the video bitrate, particularly when other devices share the upload connection, and check YouTube’s stream-health indicators during a test.

Set up an OBS HDR stream

YouTube’s HDR instructions list OBS 30.1 or newer and a hardware HEVC encoder. The source must itself provide HDR; an SDR source cannot become genuine HDR merely by selecting HDR output settings.

  1. Confirm the source and encoder. Use an HDR-capable camera, game source, or other HDR input, and confirm that the system’s hardware encoder supports HEVC Main 10 at 2160p60. YouTube’s instructions note Windows 11 Auto HDR with an HDR monitor as one possible route to an HDR source, but that does not establish that every system or source will meet the full streaming requirements.
  2. Set the video signal. In OBS, enable HDR and use P010 (4:2:0), Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG, and the HEVC Main 10 profile as specified in YouTube’s HDR instructions. YouTube recommends HLG.
  3. Set the stream encoder and bitrate. Select hardware H.265/HEVC, configure 2160p at 60 fps, and plan around YouTube’s recommended 35 Mbps video bitrate for HEVC at 4K60. Confirm the encoder is using the Main 10 profile, not an 8-bit HEVC mode.
  4. Connect to YouTube. Use the stream key and ingest settings for the intended YouTube broadcast. YouTube allows HDR over RTMP(S) or HLS. Its general encoder guidance recommends H.265 over RTMP(S); use HLS if the encoder cannot send HDR over RTMP(S).
  5. Run a private or unlisted test before the event. Check the incoming signal, stream health, color appearance, and audio. YouTube says 4K streams use normal latency; the low-latency option is unavailable for 4K/2160p.

RTMP(S) or HLS: what changes?

YouTube says HDR can be sent over RTMP(S) or HLS. RTMP(S) is the usual choice when the encoder supports YouTube’s HDR requirements over that protocol. HLS can be appropriate when an encoder does not support HDR over RTMP(S), but hardware HLS implementations have specific delivery requirements.

  • HLS uses TS segments lasting 1–4 seconds.
  • The rolling playlist must have no more than five outstanding segments.
  • The encoder must use HTTPS POST/PUT.

Those HLS details come from YouTube’s undated HDR guide, accessed October 3, 2026. Follow the current documentation for both YouTube and the chosen encoder; a protocol option alone does not confirm correct HDR formatting.

How to evaluate an encoder or hardware appliance

Check the exact model and configuration rather than relying on a general claim such as “4K streaming.” YouTube’s encoder directory describes the Blackmagic Web Presenter 4K as streaming up to 2160p60 directly to YouTube, and AWS Elemental MediaLive as supporting live streaming up to 4Kp60 HEVC. Those directory descriptions do not, by themselves, verify every 10-bit HDR, color-metadata, and protocol requirement for a specific setup. The directory also notes that listed products are not made by YouTube.

  • Does the exact model encode 2160p60?
  • Does it support HEVC Main 10 and 10-bit HDR at that resolution and frame rate?
  • Can it preserve BT.2020 and PQ or HLG metadata from the source?
  • Does it support HDR over RTMP(S), or HLS with YouTube’s segment, playlist, and HTTPS requirements?
  • Can the network sustain the selected bitrate with headroom?
  • Is it software, a hardware appliance, or a cloud service—and does its workflow accept the source you need to stream?

A capture card is not universally required. Whether one is needed depends on the source and how the encoder receives its video signal.

Common problems and fixes

The stream is 4K but not recognized as HDR

Check that the source is HDR and that the encoder is sending HEVC Main 10, P010, BT.2020, and PQ or HLG metadata. A 2160p60 resolution setting alone does not make a stream HDR.

The encoder offers HEVC but the image is still 8-bit

HEVC can be configured for different bit depths. Confirm Main 10 is selected and that the full source-to-encoder path preserves 10-bit output.

The stream buffers or reports poor health

Check the actual available upload capacity, competing network traffic, encoder load, and configured bitrate. YouTube’s HEVC recommendation for 4K60 HDR is 35 Mbps; ensure the connection has additional headroom rather than treating that figure as the total connection speed to target.

HDR works over one protocol but not another

Verify the encoder’s HDR support for the selected protocol. YouTube supports HDR over RTMP(S) and HLS, but an encoder may not implement HDR over RTMP(S). For hardware HLS, check the segment duration, playlist limit, and HTTPS method requirements.

Viewers report a delay

4K streams use YouTube’s normal latency path; YouTube does not offer its low-latency option for 4K/2160p. Plan for that delay when coordinating a live event.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is to keep uploaded documentary footage playing on a YouTube channel rather than stream a live camera or production, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on; it supports uploaded video up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
