Treat your YouTube stream key like a password: limit who and what can access it, send the stream to YouTube over RTMPS, and reset the key if it may have been exposed. On a shared Azure VM, the most important distinction is between people who can access the machine and the encoder process that needs the key. Where the encoder supports it, store the key in Azure Key Vault and let a narrowly permissioned managed identity retrieve it.
Why a stream key needs protection
YouTube describes stream keys as “your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Someone who obtains a key may be able to send a feed to the associated stream. YouTube’s guidance on managing live stream settings explains how to manage and reset keys.
A shared VM adds another exposure path: people and workloads with sufficient access to the host may be able to inspect the encoder configuration, its process environment, files, or output. RTMPS encrypts the connection between encoder and YouTube, but it does not protect a key copied into a shared file, terminal history, logs, chat, screenshots, or source control.
Secure the people and accounts first
Use individual YouTube channel permissions
Do not share the Google Account password to give a collaborator access. Use YouTube channel permissions and assign the least powerful role that permits the person’s task. YouTube says owners and managers can reset stream keys; editors and viewers cannot. Keep key-reset authority limited to people who need it.

Limit access to the VM
Give people individual VM accounts and only the privileges required for their work. Avoid broad shared administrator access: anyone able to execute code on the machine may be able to inspect local configuration or use permissions granted to the VM’s workload identity. Remove accounts and permissions when they are no longer needed.
For remote administration, Microsoft recommends safer access paths such as Azure Bastion or Point-to-Site VPN; Just-in-Time (JIT) access can open management ports temporarily when needed. Scope network rules to trusted sources and keep temporary openings short. Microsoft explicitly warns against allowing inbound SSH or RDP from 0.0.0.0/0. See Microsoft’s Azure VM access guidance.
Choose an Azure access path that fits the job

These options address how people reach the host; they do not by themselves protect a key from an authorized user or process that can read it.
Use RTMPS for the encoder-to-YouTube connection

In YouTube Live Control Room, locate the stream’s RTMPS server URL and stream key in the stream settings. YouTube’s RTMPS instructions describe RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL.

Configure the encoder to send to the RTMPS URL, using the key through the encoder’s supported configuration method. Confirm that the encoder is configured for RTMPS rather than an unencrypted RTMP endpoint.

Check the encoder’s logs and configuration handling so the key is not echoed into logs, terminal output, or other broadly accessible locations.
RTMPS protects the stream connection in transit. It does not encrypt a key stored carelessly on the VM or prevent a person with access to the encoder configuration from reading it.
Store the key outside code where the encoder supports it
Preferred pattern: Key Vault and a managed identity

Store the stream key as a secret in Azure Key Vault rather than embedding it in application code, a repository, or a shared configuration file.

Enable a managed identity for the VM or workload that runs the encoder, then grant it only the permissions needed to retrieve the required secret. Avoid broad subscription-level roles.

Configure the encoder integration or a narrowly scoped helper process to retrieve the secret through that identity, using the method supported by the encoder and operating system.

Review both the identity’s permissions and who can run code on the VM. A managed identity avoids embedding credentials in code, but Microsoft cautions that code executing on a resource can exercise permissions assigned to its identity.
Microsoft documents the VM-to-resource pattern in its managed identity tutorial and provides managed identity best-practice recommendations. The exact retrieval procedure depends on the encoder and operating system; these general Azure patterns are not encoder-specific setup instructions.

If the encoder needs a manually entered key
Some encoder configurations may require entering the key directly. In that case, secure the configuration file with host permissions so only the account and service that need it can read it; do not make it world-readable or place it in a shared location. Keep the host’s user and service privileges separated as far as your operating system and encoder allow. If you cannot establish who could read the file, treat the key as potentially exposed and rotate it.
Microsoft’s guidance on securing and using policies on Azure virtual machines is relevant to host controls, but the correct file-permission steps depend on your VM’s operating system and configuration.

In YouTube Studio, select Go Live, open the Stream tab, find Stream key, and select Reset. YouTube documents this process in Manage live stream settings. Only an owner or manager can reset the key.

Replace the old key in the encoder or secret store and confirm the encoder is using the replacement. A reset key will require updating the encoder configuration.

Review who has channel and VM access; remove access that is no longer needed. Check relevant logs and configuration locations for unintended disclosure, taking care not to copy the key into new logs or messages while investigating.

If you cannot determine whether the key was exposed, leave the old key reset rather than restoring it. Verify that the updated encoder can connect using the new key.
