You can use an eligible Indian Visa or Mastercard debit card to pay for Azure VM usage. Microsoft lists both networks for Azure subscriptions in India, but eligibility does not guarantee that your particular card or bank will approve a payment. Add the card in Azure’s billing area, complete the India OTP check, and use the payment option offered for your account if an automatic charge is declined.
Can you use an Indian debit card for an Azure VM?
Yes, if it is an eligible Visa or Mastercard debit card. Microsoft’s payment-method documentation says, “India supports credit and debit cards through Visa and Mastercard.” Microsoft Learn: Add, update, or delete a payment method. This is network-level support, not a promise that every individual card will pass Azure’s checks or be authorized by its bank. Microsoft’s country table also excludes virtual and prepaid cards from supported payment methods. Supported payment methods for Azure subscriptions.
The card is for your Azure subscription billing; it is not a separate payment attached only to a VM. Azure bills cloud usage through the subscription. The exact payment controls and permissions depend on the billing agreement associated with your account.
Add the debit card in the Azure portal
- Sign in to the Azure portal with an account that has access to the relevant billing account.
- Open Cost Management + Billing.
- Select the relevant subscription for a Microsoft Online Subscription Program (MOSP) pay-as-you-go account, or select the billing profile for a Microsoft Customer Agreement (MCA) account.
- Open Payment methods, choose the option to add a payment method, and enter the debit-card details.
- Complete the one-time password (OTP) verification. Microsoft says an OTP is generated for customers in India when they add a new payment method.
- Follow the portal prompts to save or set the card as the payment method for the account or billing profile.
For a MOSP pay-as-you-go subscription, the account administrator manages the payment instrument. An MCA account requires appropriate billing permissions. If you cannot see the payment-method controls, confirm that you are in the correct subscription or billing profile and ask an administrator with the required billing access to make the change. What to do if Azure declines an automatic card payment
A saved card and a one-time payment are different workflows. If an automatic payment is declined, Microsoft documents a one-time Pay now option where it is available for the bill. Open the bill or billing area and check whether that option is offered for your account; you may be able to retry with the card or choose another payment method shown there. Microsoft Learn: Pay your Microsoft Customer Agreement or Microsoft Online Subscription Program bill.
For eligible Indian billing accounts, Microsoft also documents UPI and NetBanking as one-time payment options. UPI is available for MCA accounts as well. Availability can depend on the billing account and bill, so rely on the choices shown in Azure rather than assuming every method is available to every customer.

Compare the available payment workflows
| Workflow | How it works | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Saved or default card | Azure uses the saved payment method for billing when supported and authorized. | Card-network eligibility does not ensure approval. Indian regulatory requirements can affect card storage and automatic charges. |
| One-time card payment | Use Pay now for a bill if Azure offers it. | Confirm the option appears for your bill and that the card is accepted. |
| UPI or NetBanking | Microsoft documents these as one-time options for eligible Indian billing accounts; UPI is also supported for MCA accounts. | Check the available payment choices for your account and bill. |
Microsoft’s billing guidance discusses RBI changes and payment-specific requirements, but those details do not establish one recurring-charge limit that applies universally to every Azure debit-card payment.
