Short answer: YouTube’s published guidance does not describe a keepalive setting that renews an expired session in a third-party cloud encoder. Check whether the cloud service stopped its encoder job or YouTube stopped receiving the feed, then verify the stream key and server URL. Session duration, renewal, and restart behavior must be confirmed with the cloud encoder provider. YouTube’s under-12-hour automatic archive guidance is about archiving—not encoder session lifetime.
First identify which connection stopped
A YouTube live stream depends on an encoder sending a feed to YouTube’s ingest service. The encoder uses a YouTube server URL and stream key; the key routes the feed and is comparable to a password and address. A cloud encoder adds another layer: its own job or session must remain active while it sends that feed.
When the broadcast goes offline, inspect both systems rather than assuming YouTube expired the cloud session. In the cloud encoder dashboard, check whether the job is running, stopped, failed, or marked expired. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, inspect the preview, stream status, health messages, and any specific error instructions. YouTube’s status information can help identify an ingest or signal problem, but the cloud provider’s job state is needed to establish whether its session ended. YouTube: View live stream metrics
Does YouTube have a keepalive setting for a cloud encoder?
YouTube’s documented encoder setup covers the server URL and stream key, and its stream settings include auto-start and auto-stop controls. Those settings govern starting or stopping a YouTube stream from an encoder; YouTube does not describe them as a way to renew a third-party cloud encoder’s session. Its public guidance also does not establish that changing the ingest protocol or reusing a stream key will extend a provider’s session.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Ask the cloud encoder provider for its documented session duration, renewal method, idle behavior, restart behavior, and any persistent-job or keepalive setting. Confirm whether a restart reconnects to the same YouTube stream and whether it requires manual action. These are provider-specific controls; do not infer their behavior from YouTube’s encoder instructions.
Troubleshoot an expired or interrupted stream
- Check the cloud job. Look at the provider’s session or job state and event history. If it reports expiry or a stopped job, follow that provider’s documented restart procedure and ask support how to prevent recurrence. A YouTube-side setting cannot be assumed to renew a job the provider has ended.
- Check YouTube’s Live Control Room. Open the scheduled or active stream, review the preview and stream-health messages, and follow any specific error guidance. This helps distinguish a feed YouTube is not receiving from a cloud job that is no longer sending one. YouTube: Troubleshoot live stream errors
- Verify the connection details. Confirm the encoder is configured with the intended YouTube Live server URL and current stream key. If the encoder reports an error starting, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends copying the current key from Live Control Room into the encoder. Treat the stream key as sensitive and do not publish it. YouTube: Encoder settings · YouTube: Troubleshoot live stream errors
- Check start/stop settings and preview. For a scheduled stream, use the Live Control Room preview and Go live step where required. Review auto-start and auto-stop settings so they match the intended workflow; these are not cloud-session renewal controls. - Test recovery before relying on it. YouTube recommends testing the setup in advance, monitoring the stream, and testing a backup encoder by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet. Confirm that your own cloud provider’s recovery procedure behaves as expected; YouTube’s failover advice does not establish how that provider handles expired sessions. YouTube: Live streaming tips
What the 12-hour archive guidance means
YouTube’s encoder setup instructions say, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” That is an archive threshold, not a statement that cloud encoder sessions last 12 hours, expire at 12 hours, or can be extended with a keepalive. Do not use the archive limit to diagnose a provider session timeout. YouTube: Create a live stream with an encoder

Prevent a repeat interruption
- Ask the encoder provider to document its session lifetime, renewal and restart behavior, and whether jobs can be configured to persist.
- Test a full run that lasts longer than the period when the interruption occurred, and check both the provider’s job state and YouTube’s stream health while it runs.
- Agree on a recovery path: who receives failure alerts, who can restart the job, and whether restarting requires updating the stream key or scheduled broadcast.
- Keep a tested backup encoder or recovery procedure available for streams where uninterrupted continuity matters.
YouTube recommends RTMPS. Its encoder guidance also covers RTMP/RTMPS and HLS in particular circumstances, but it does not claim that a protocol prevents an external cloud service from expiring its session. Choose a protocol based on YouTube’s applicable setup guidance and your provider’s documented support—not as a substitute for confirming session behavior. YouTube: Live streaming tips
